Not Exactly a Surprise

| August 30, 2012

Welll, the Navy announced today the fate of that ship’s captain who recently managed to get his ship rammed near the Strait of Hormuz. And I have to say the decision wasn’t really a surprise to me:

The skipper of the USS Porter has been removed from command after his ship collided with an oil tanker just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz

The commander of Naval Surface Force Atlantic announced Cmdr. Martin Arriola’s relief of command on Thursday.

I have zero experience in matters nautical, so I can’t really give an educated opinion on whether or not this was justified.  But as a “landlubber”, well, I do have to say it seems about right to me.

I hope CDR Arriola has some good plans for life post-Navy.  I’d guess his Navy career has reached it’s apex.

He may have been a great officer and skipper…but, ultimately, the commander is responsible for everything that happens under his command. Even if Ensign Schmedlap actually did it.

Dad told me once, “To some extent, you are always held hostage by the people who work for you.”

Fair winds, Commander.

I think he has two choices: desk job some place like Adak or just leave the Navy and don’t look back.

If he already has his 20, he’ll retire within months, if not, he’ll be passing out basketballs at some MWR facility until he gets to his 20.

Yeah, it ain’t always fair, but then again, the Captain of a ship or submarine is one of the few truly autonomous positions left in the military.

haha, poor guy was probably asleep in his quarters when some retard at the wheel started weaving.

This is just step 1 for the former Capt of the Porter.
Step 2 completion of the JAG Manual investigation
Step 3 (maybe) a Board of Inquiry
Step 4 (maybe) a General Courts-Marital

I don’t know if the Capt and/or other Officers/crew will face charges, but they could.
The careers of several other officers ended that night.

ENS Schmedlap

No, even worse. He was on the bridge giving orders. Do a web search for the audio.
