SGT K sends us this video. Apparently no one was injured, although it’s hard to believe;

Okay, not a pilot, but I did sleep somewhere in the vicinity of a Holiday Inn Express last night, so here goes:

–High altitude…thin air…less lift…lower rate of climb ability…need to be higher AGL before you pull shit like this.

Pilots please correct me if I’m wrong here.

Frankly Opinionated

While snow is very deceptive to the eye, being a bit of a Cowboy doesn’t help things either.

Anybody have a ball park guess on the dollar amount for the Apache that will go on the statement of charges for that pilot?

Bobo

Paraphrased from a senior aviator friend – hundreds of hours of combat flying time that consists of ferrying Blackhawks and Chinooks between two points doesn’t make you a combat aviator.

Hondo

Well, I think we now have our “Oh, shit!” moment of the week. If not the year.

Hondo

Fly away cost seems to be a tad over $7M; the unit cost (includes pro-rata R&D, testing, etc . . . , costs) is a tad under $14M. Either way, I think we’re looking at a FLIPL (formerly Report of Survey) following an aircraft accident investigation rather than a statement of charges. Plus a high probability of at least one career ended early.

DirtSquid

Either that or no charges anywhere, but there will be a shit ton of whatever the Army calls GMT’s (General Military Training) mandatory Army-wide regarding responsible LZ marking in a combat theater. That crash will probably be blamed on some PFC on the ground. That camera lens reflected light into the pilot’s eyes, that’s why he crashed.

Old Tanker

That’s what you call a flat dick….

Old Trooper

As someone from the aviation branch (combat aviation) who was around this stuff 24/7, I can see a couple of things: Pilot did a pass/climb/kickover like he was setting up for a gun run. Unfamiliar with the terrain, not enough aircraft altitude and didn’t compensate for the altitude he was flying at and then basically flew it into the ground. IOW; it looks like he was hotdogging a smidge and it bit him in the ass.

Jacobite

Boeing makes one hell of a product though don’t they? Like skipping a stone across a pond………

Dave Thul

How long until the Al Qaeda propaganda division tries to claim that the pilot crashed on purpose because the chopper was full of Korans.

Sig

I have loved Apaches since playing Gunship on the Commodore 64. That hurt to watch. Glad no one was killed.

Cedo Alteram

#12 Haven’t thought about that game in years. My mother threw out my old Commodore 64 a few years ago, without my knowledge.

OT–if this had been a real gun run, he would have hit the target–or at least shoved the barrel up the Tali’s ass.
