Houston to host parade for Iraq vets

| March 14, 2012

The Houston Chronicle reports that their city will host a parade for returning veterans of the Iraq War next month;

Houston’s parade is scheduled for Saturday, April 7, said Gene Tulich, chairman of the nonprofit Houston Military Affairs Committee.

The Lone Star Veterans Association, a Houston-based Iraq and Afghanistan veterans group, will march front and center, followed by military personnel from local Reserve and National Guard units, Tulich said. Veterans of previous wars also are invited to participate.

The parade will kick off between 3 and 3:30 p.m., with assembly about 2 p.m., Tulich said. The route has yet to be determined, but will end at Minute Maid Park, where the Astros have donated 1,000 tickets for personnel in uniform, and their families, in addition to Iraq War veterans who are no longer in uniform.

I know that most of you guys don’t want parades and would prefer to just have proper health care and to have people not act funny when you tell them you were in Iraq, but it looks like this all you’re going to get. It’s cool of the Astros to give out boat loads of free tickets, I know you’d rather have a good team handing out tickets, but it’s all Houston has, sorry.

“The mayor wanted to do something to honor the Iraq War veterans,” said Michan. “She is proud to partner with the Astros for this and plans to have a major announcement with all the details in the next week or so.”

Yeah, Mayor Annise Parker is the one who invited Ballduster McSoulpatch to her victory party, so if any of you go to Houston and meet her, tell her that I said ‘thanks’.

I think it’s great that our veterans are being recognized for their sacrifices! I enlisted soon enough after the end of the Nam, I got called a “baby killer” by the filthy hippies. I think I’d have rather had a parade!? 😮

YY, when I came home from Germany in 76, I was called a baby killer by hippies at the San Fran airport. I just told them to go fu– themselves.

I am happy to hear our city is holding city-wide recognition event for our local heroes! My son served two tours in Fallujah during the Iraqi Freedom War. Who do we contact to participate in the veteran walk on April 7th? We owe all our vets so much more – our eternal thankfulness and support.
