Olberman “suspended”

| November 5, 2010

ROS and Old Trooper both sent links to us about NBC suspending Olbermann indefinitely here and here. I think NBC has been looking for a reason to fire him for a while and he broke their rules right on time.

NBC claims Olbie contributed to three Democrat candidates during the elections this Fall. Someone who had a grudge (no, that can’t be true) probably blew the whistle on him because I’m sure someone didn’t spend the whole Fall looking through public records.

I don’t like Olbermann at all…not even a little bit. The only time I’ve ever watched him is on YouTube in case someone is watching my viewing habits and mistakes me for a fan. I do appreciate him outing Tony Camerino/Matthew Alexander, though.

But I think it’s shitty for NBC to have a clause in his contract that forbids campaign contributions to political candidates. Like I told Old Trooper, it’s like they make employees hang their dicks on the wall before they go into the whorehouse. It’s not like Olbermann contributes to Democrats every time he opens his stupid yap. It’s almost rises to the level of the Juan Williams firing…except that he signed the contract. NBC probably did it to get ahead of the news cycle.

I’m glad he’s gone, I just don’t like the way he was “suspended”.

Operator Dan’s take below the jump;

TAH’s favorite MSNBC host Keith Olbermann appears to be on his way out of MSNBC as a result of campaign donations he made to three Democrats (Jack Conway from Kentucky and Gabby Giffords and Raul “Boycott My State” Grijalva from Arizona). The day he made a donation to Grijalva he also appeared on his show. Really Keith? We can’t get guests now on your show without paying them off?

Right now, he is suspended “indefinitely without pay” but I suspect he is on his way out and I also suspect that MSNBC has been looking for a reason to get rid of him for awhile. Keith doesn’t play well with others (including other leftists) and he has had problems with every other broadcasting job that he has held.

From Hot Air and Ace of Spades:

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann made campaign contributions to two Arizona members of Congress and failed Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway ahead of Tuesday’s election — a potential violation of NBC’s ethics policies.

Olbermann, who acknowledged the contributions in a statement to POLITICO, made the maximum legal donations of $2,400 apiece to Conway and to Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords. He donated to the Arizona pair on Oct. 28 – the same day that Grijalva appeared as a guest on Olbermann’s “Countdown” show. Grijalva, a prominent liberal who was only declared a winner in his race Thursday night, was in a tight contest against tea party-backed candidate Ruth McClung when he appeared on Countdown – one of several appearances he made on the show.

NBC has a rule against employees contributing to political campaigns, and a wide range of news organizations prohibit political contributions – considering it a breach of journalistic independence to contribute to the candidates they cover.

MSNBC president Phil Griffin released the following statement Friday following the news that Keith Olbermann had donated to three Democratic candidates this election cycle:

“I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.”

More from Jonah Goldberg. HuffPo highlights some of the issues MSNBC has been having with its hosts and frequent guests:

In recent months, Griffin has taken several bold steps to declare his authority over the network and its sometimes unruly talent: he sent a stern memo warning hosts to not publicly fight with each other, he suspended David Shuster indefinitely for filming a CNN pilot, suspended Donny Deutsch, banned Markos Moulitsas from the network, and reprimanded Ed Schultz for threatening to “torch” the network.

Of course people are losing it in the comments section of the above post and it is quite entertaining. I am sure Claymore will have some interesting DU posts for us.

Jonn added: Yes, indeed Claymore did find an interesting post on DU, and of course they blame Fox and Scarborough for Olbermann’s firing. And the fact that MSNBC violated Olbermann’s first amendment rights…not realizing, of course, that the Bill of Rights protects us from the government, not each other.

This is my favorite comment from the DU thread;

They’ll change their minds

He brings in way too many viewers for them to let him go.

The only viewers he brought in was conservative bloggers waiting to catch him make another blunder. I mean, he was commenting on stuff way above the head and outside the expertise of the average Cornell Ag school grad. Remember when the Olympics had more viewers in his time slot? And his guest host had more viewers when Olbermann was on vacation?

I watched him on election night (clips of which can be seen on You Tube). He seemed deflated even more so than you would expect from the election results.

He also announced on Monday night that he was dropping the “Worst Person in the World” clip, which was his only iconic element. I think the suits at MSNBC tore his nameplate off the lobby wall last week. They’re just announcing it now.

In the end, all he was was Charles Grodin with a sports IQ.

Can’t wait to see wait O’Reilly has to say tonight.

Spook86

The whole freaking network is a contribution to the democrat party.

Still glad to see him go.

Old Trooper

I don’t like him, either. I think he’s a dumbass of epic proportions, however, I think he should be able to contribute his own money to whichever candidate he wants. I’m sure the bigshots at NBC contributed to their own candidates, so I think they are a little on the hypocritical side.

The DU’ers must be having anueryms today. First Grayson , now Olberdouche. Their insane world is crumbling around them.

Sean

As I figured the DUers are having Mass Hysteria over there

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Old Trooper,
Most news organizations have a notification/approval process for political donations by employees who cover those events. They try to maintain that they are unbiased in their coverage and those policies are one of the “fig leaves” they use. No one has ever believed that Moldy Olby was unbiased (hell, he probably hung out on the left side of the womb) but he signed the contract and should have known it would bite him.

ROS

I especially liked these two little gems:

“We need to flood MSNBC with emails telling them to bring Keith back! He and Rachel Maddow are the only ones who keep me sane (politically, anyway).”

“If he went on Al Jazeera English he’d get a global audience
I’d love that as I can’t get MSNBC where I live and it would encourage more people in the US to watch AJ English.”

ROS

And my faaaaaavorite:

“Do not be so certain. Conservatives trying to de-fund NPR as well.
They are coming for DU already. I can sense it.”

ponsdorf

What we have here is the definition of a ‘False Flag’ operation writ large.

Claymore

And here I thought Capt. Douchebag was supposed to be all so intelligent and stuff. If he signed a contract with that clause in it, knowing he was going to be rolling in political feces on his program, he’s a fucking moron…but I repeat myself. I was inclined to be sympathetic, thinking that if MSNBC has to cut this ass goblin loose for contributing to political campaigns, they were going to soon have no one but the janitors running the network. I guess what really surprises me is that MSNBC actually executed the clause in his contract instead of covering it up. Best comment I’ve heard so far is from my wife when she heard about it, “Who did he piss off?”

Sporkmaster

Oh and this is going around Facebook.. They are claiming that they have over 125,000 signers.

Old Tanker

Too bad, I was looking forward to watching Keith’s head explode in the next couple of months….

Oh and this is going around Facebook.. They are claiming that they have over 125,000 signers.

Wow, I am genuinely impressed. I didn’t think he even had that many viewers who were smart enough to figure out how to read and use Facebook.

UpNorth

Michael, he doesn’t have that many, never did, never will. Unless you count the TV’s left on MessNBC when folks go out to walk their dogs, take a dump or change the air in their tires in that time slot.
Most of the signers are far to the right of Keef, they want him to stay around for comic relief. And, they’re afraid that he’ll end up doing something for NBC and the NFL. NBC just can’t rid themselves of far left douchebags.

NHSparky

What makes it all the worse is that those donations in question were made immediately after several of those pols appeared on his show a few weeks back. Quid pro quo, anyone?

Sean

From that Facebook- EusebiaAq @BoldProgressive To tell the truth in Hatefull Whitemale USA Media is that Olbermann was the only whitemale who doesnot hate poeple of color

Oh Man, someones dashiki is too tight

Sean
Claymore

Yeah my janitor prediction is starting to look more and more plausible.

Olberdouches replacement just got Suspended by MSNBC for the same reason

I read that Joe Scarborough also has donated to politicians. I doubt MSNBC suspends him from “Morning Joe”. This isn’t about the donations, it’s about Olbermann being a douCHEbag. They got caught lying about the reason they suspended him and now are scrambling to CYA. Pathetic. They should have just fired him outright for being a douCHE with low ratings.

NHSparky

Lean forward, libtards. Lean forward.

JonP

really? Great news…oh, I read that wrong. I thought it said “Olbermann GARROTED” not suspended. Must have been wishful thinking.

USMC Steve

I don’t like this turd, but I just don’t think it is right to prohibit him from exercising political play same as the rest of us. And I doubt it is legal either.
