National Guard in Minnesota hands out coffee, donuts to anti-ICE protesters
Guard member called the action a ‘demonstration of safety and security’ as tensions rise over recent fatal shootings

The Minnesota National Guard was seen handing out coffee and donuts to anti-ICE protesters in St. Paul on Sunday.
Video captured guardsmen in yellow vests offering donuts and coffee out the back of a vehicle. One National Guard member told WCCO-TV that this was a “demonstration of safety and security.”
The Minnesota National Guard posted on X earlier this month that if troops were deployed to the Twin Cities, they would wear reflective vests “to help distinguish them from other agencies in similar uniforms.”
The guardsmen in the video were seen one day after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Alex J. Pretti after he allegedly confronted officers during a Department of Homeland Security operation in south Minneapolis.

I realize these guardsmen were following lawful orders, but you gotta be shitting me. Providing donuts and coffee to protesters? I’m not sure how I’d react to being ordered to do that. One of those “ethical dilemmas” we used to get briefings about.

According to a 2007 Washington Post article by David Montgomery, his name is George Edgerly Harris III. Harris was a young actor from New York, about 18 years old, who later made the Summer of Love pilgrimage to San Francisco that for which the hippie movement was famous. There, he came out as gay, changed his name to Hibiscus, and co-founded The Cockettes, a “flamboyant, psychedelic gay-themed drag troupe.”
Harris died in the early 1980s during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.
