Prosecutors rule security guard acted in self-defense in shooting that killed woman outside Southfield bar

Noelle Friel, Reporter
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A security guard who shot and killed a woman outside a Southfield bar will not face charges.

Investigators said a woman pulled a gun on the security guard outside of Bloom Southfield after an earlier fight involving her sister and brother-in-law.

The guard fired six shots, killing 33-year-old Alexandra Fields and accidentally hitting another person in the leg.

Prosecutors ruled the shooting was justified as the guard acted in self-defense.

“This remains a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of life and injury to another individual. We recognize the impact this has had on families involved and on our community,” said Southfield police Chief Elvin Barren.

Police said they will now work with the bar to improve security, including better lighting and cameras.

Officials said the armed security guard was trying to provide aid to a woman who was injured in the fight when Fields approached with a wrench and then a gun.

“According to witnesses, she then raised the handgun toward her chest, and she was approximately one to two feet away from the security guard,” Barren said. ”The security guard discharged his firearm, firing multiple rounds and striking the decedent six times.”

Bar owner Kenny Valentino said aside from contracting armed security, the bar also wands down customers to ensure no weapons are allowed inside.

“The security was out there, and they were actively trying to dismantle the situation, so it didn’t escalate, unfortunately they weren’t successful in that,” Valentino said.

The incident has sparked safety concerns from residents of the nearby Chateau Villa Condominiums.

In response, Valentino plans to meet with the condo association and implement new safety measures, including additional signage and a parking lot attendant to prevent customers from using the complex’s visitor parking area.

As soon as the guard shot the angry woman, the situation de-escalated.

A whole lot of folks just fail to understand that you can do whatever you can to deescalate a situation, but the suspect makes the final decision about when things get lethal.

All the more reason I’m glad I don’t do the bar scene anymore. Nothing good comes of it.
