Two sheriffs, other law enforcement arrested after ‘monumental betrayal of public trust’
Story by Brooklyn Joyner and Richard Bourne
Multiple law enforcement officers have been indicted in a yearlong conspiracy to traffic drugs across the state in exchange for money. The FBI, including the head of the Jackson branch, joined the United States Attorney’s Northern District of Mississippi in Oxford Thursday afternoon.
U.S. Attorney Clay Joiner said 20 people were indicted for taking bribes and aiding and abetting drug trafficking and associated crimes.
“They betrayed the trust that the public placed in them. Disgraced the badge and undermined the hard work across this state and across the region,” said FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey. “We will not tolerate public corruption amongst America’s criminal justice system.”
Joiner said the law enforcement officers and their accomplices provided safe passage of drug transport through the Delta in exchange for bribe money. In two instances, drugs were transported to Memphis and to Miami.

I won’t go into depth about the race of the corrupt soon-to-be ex-cops; dirty cops come in all colors and creeds: 3 Louisiana police chiefs arrested by federal authorities.
I just don’t understand how someone sworn to protect and defend the public and to uphold the law can make the decision to not only violate the law but do so egregiously. To elaborate, I can see why an underpaid rank-and-file local cop might be tempted to look the other way in some scenarios or even take dirty money. I can also empathize with a rookie cop getting caught up in a lose-lose situation, like various films and TV shows have portrayed (Training Day, etc.). Sure, the latter is Hollywood, but I have no doubt that officers have been put into similar situations, where they have the choice to shut up, look the other way, and maybe make a little extra money, or to risk their careers and even lives trying to expose the corruption.
Actively aiding criminals while serving as a LEO and especially running criminal operations while doubling as a senior or chief LEO should result in much more severe punishment than what Shaquille the Sling Man on the street corner or Ignacio the Illegal sitting outside the Home Depot get. The shitty sheriffs should hope they not only get put into PC but also get “prison big” in record time. They’ll likely recall some of those ethics they doubtlessly crammed down subordinates’ throat and decide to rat out their criminal cohorts for plea deals.
My retired NYPD co-worker used to tell me that the downfall of an NYPD officer were the 3 B”s which are Booze, Broads and betting. He retired when the 1970 Knapp commision started after NYPD Frank Serpico was set up on a drug bust by his own men and was shot when the door of the apartment was opened up. Co-worker started with us a number of years after Knapp. commision..
Law enforcement is having a hard enough time having trust with the public and elected officials.
Now these dirtbags come along and make things worse.
Throw the book at them and let Bubba and Thor take care of the rest.
A ex-cop in prison has a very difficult time staying alive.
They are put in a separate population from other inmates.
