Government shutdown: Democrats wanted to extend pandemic era Obamacare subsidies
The Democrats wanted certain spending to be reinstated or continued that would’ve worked against President Trump and DOGE’s intent. Despite a last-ditch effort by the House to temporarily extend the deadline via a short continuing resolution, neither party came to an agreement. Trump suggested that a shutdown would make it easy for him to take “irrevocable” actions.

In addition to their anger over being sidelined, Democrats had also pushed for a CR to extend Obamacare subsidies that were enhanced during the COVID-19 pandemic but were set to expire at the end of 2025.
Republican leaders signaled they were willing to discuss those healthcare dollars later this year but accused Democrats of risking the entire federal government over their demands.
“There isn’t any substantive reason why there ought to be a government shutdown. This is something that has been done routinely, as I said, 13 different times when the Democrats had the majority. But we are not going to be held hostage for over $1 trillion in new spending on a continuing resolution,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said ahead of the vote.
President Donald Trump and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) now have wide discretion over what federal services will remain active. However, thousands of government workers are set to be furloughed or made to temporarily work without paychecks, and a litany of federal agencies could be closed.
OMB Director Russ Vought released a memo shortly after the GOP’s CR failed that said because it was “clear” that Senate Democrats would block any more attempts to pass the bill before the deadline, “affected agencies should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown.”
“It is unclear how long Democrats will maintain their untenable posture, making the duration of the shutdown difficult to predict,” the memo read. “Regardless, employees should report to work for their next regularly scheduled tour of duty to undertake orderly shutdown activities.”
Some federal workers could lose their jobs permanently as well, with OMB Director Russ Vought issuing guidance earlier this month warning offices to consider plans for mass layoffs in the event of a shutdown.
Trump told reporters earlier in the day that Republicans did not want a shutdown, but warned the GOP could inflict pain on Democrats should the government close.

The Democrats will maintain their untenable posture until all the polls go against them and everyone hates them except the socialists, who are trying to advance their agenda here. Once primary challengers to weak seats are announced, the party will go into panic mode, sign off and declare victory.

Back during COVID, a close friend was working as a contractor at a 3-letter agency. He went to work, but the guvvies sat on their asses at home collecting their paychecks. Sometimes they came in, but simply to show the flag. Sometimes some would come in for a week, then the next week, some other showed up. Nothing got done. Strangely enough, the world kept turning on its axis.
I’ve read that up to 100,000 guvvies are threatening to resign. Please, please do it. It will make PDT’s job that much easier.
The truth isn’t that 100,000 govies are going to resign, it’s that approx 100,000 have retired and taken the buyouts since Jan 2025 and that was finalized today. I had 2 folks take the buyout and retired and they’re getting paid through the end of 2025.
It was interesting the way the MSM spun that. Those 100K have been gone for quite some time. They just stopped getting paid today.
So they “Fixed the glitch”

A lot of those 100K used the “early out program” to retire early. They got to leave work in February, get paid till October, and then retire. Not a bad deal.
I’m one of them. I took the DRP and today is my first official Administrative Leave until my retirement date of 31 Dec 25. 30 years!! Now I’m working for my wife [hat tip to Prior Service (Ret)].

I’m busier after retirement from my state jobs than before, it seems.
Although, in all fairness, looking back at all we did in the [real] Boy Scouts, I’m not sure when I slept then.
But for a retired guy, I sure am working a lot. (And not just for Mrs. GB)
We had 2 people take it. One little thing nobody talks about, if an employee took the buyout, their position goes away too. They don’t get replaced. That’s a bit of a double edged sword. We were already short handed.
Anything associated with Obamacare should be abandoned completely, and remain unfunded for the abysmal program that it is.
Come’on, man! Look at all the income people got from 0bamacare. Insurance companies that helped write the bill, lobbyists, government employees, and Michelle’s college roommate’s Canadian company that crafted the website have all made many millions from our tax dollars. For all you know, maybe there was 10% in there for the 0bamas and The Big Guy. Afterall, he was ready with the deciding vote in the Senate (I can’t recall if it was needed).

Nice play on a classic quote. One problem: it’s too grounded in reality. TDS sufferers will claim that the crackdown on criminals (including illegals and rioters) is just the start. That the renewed focus on a military that is militaristic and merit-based (as opposed to progressive and DEI-focused) is evidence that Trump may be planning on keeping power come January 2029. Criminals only crime because The Man has held them down and it’s the only way they can get their due. Illegals only illegal because “better life” and we “need them for jobs Americans won’t do”. Rioters only riot because social injustice and it’s the only way their voices can be heard.
I’m blasé about the whole subject. Criminals–to include drug smugglers on open waters–need to be treated as such, up to and including forcible removal of the soul from the flesh. Illegals should go back to the country they last held legal status in, willingly or unwillingly (with a few bumps and bruises or taser probe holes for the latter). Rioters need to be checked and given a harsh reminder of the definition of “peaceful assembly”, even if that reminder involves the aforementioned bumps and bruises along with a few years of not-so-peaceful assembly in the exercise yard at a faraway prison.
Sorry, but I hear all the talking points on a near-daily basis. It’s hard for some people to understand that I simply don’t care because, a) I’m not a criminal, b) I’m not an illegal, and c) I prefer to keep my opinions to myself and disapprove of anyone forcing theirs down my throat using violent–or even just annoying–means.
Some things shut down, some working…how about we freeze pay for all legislative branch and staffers, with no make-up pay when it all restarts? Bet they’d get it fixed in a hurry.

Those 0bamacare subsidies are being paid to insurance companies. The OMB discovered the government is paying for these subsidies to the health insurance companies for premiums for 23 million people who have never had a single health benefit paid for them by 0bamacare in the past eight years. Investigators suspect that a large percentage of such persons either do not know they have 0bamacare coverage or they are bogus sign-ups for the insurance by crooked insurance agents and government minions.
