Senator Tim Kaine dismisses the idea that our rights came from the Creator

Senator Tim Kaine, Democrat from Virginia, implied the idea that our rights came from government. He feels that believing that our rights came from the Creator is similar to believing what the Iranian government believes.
“The notion that rights don’t come from laws and don’t come from the government, ah come from the creator, that’s what the Iranian government believes. It’s a theocratic regime that bases its rule on Shaira law, and targets Sunnis, Bahá?í, Jews, Christians, and other religious minorities. And they do it because they believe that they understand what natural rights are from the creator. So, the statement that our rights do not come from our laws, or our government, is extremely troubling.”

I don’t think Timmy understands that “rights” granted by the government are actually “privileges” and can be easily taken away by the government.
Yep. The Bill of Rights does NOT will rights into existence. It merely restricts and prohibits the government from infringing on rights we always had. The ones the Founders identified as necessary for a just and free society.

He doesn’t seem to be familiar with the Declaration of Independence. While not legally binding (I assume, I’m not a lawer), it lays the groundwork for the US Constitution to be built on.

The government exists to guarantee and protect rights (in theory), not grant them.
