When Stolen Valor Goes Right (Sort of)

When Your Own Supporters Accidentally Commit Stolen Valor For You
In a delicious twist of political irony, Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears—who takes stolen valor about as seriously as a drill sergeant takes tardiness—has found herself starring in her own accidental military embellishment scandal, courtesy of an overeager PAC with apparently zero fact-checkers on payroll.
The plot thickens like bad gravy: while Earle-Sears has been righteously crusading against military record fabrication (presumably with the fervor of someone who actually served), a supporting PAC decided to spice up her biography by casually mentioning she “fought overseas”—a tiny detail that happens to be entirely fictional. It’s like your mom telling the neighbors you’re a brain surgeon when you’re actually a brain surgeon’s receptionist, except with political campaigns and military service.
Enter conservative radio host John Fredericks, who swooped in faster than a helicopter parent at a school board meeting to claim full responsibility for what he diplomatically called an “oversight”—which is apparently political speak for “we invented a combat deployment.” Fredericks, channeling his inner mea culpa energy, admitted the ad “just got past” him, as if fictional overseas combat experience was merely a typo rather than, you know, completely making up someone’s military service.
The cosmic joke? A candidate who champions military integrity gets her record accidentally inflated by her own team, creating a stolen valor inception scenario that would make Christopher Nolan dizzy. Sometimes the universe’s sense of humor is so perfect, you almost suspect it has a political science degree.
Winsome Earle-Sears Takes ‘Stolen Valor’ Seriously. A PAC Appears to Be Embellishing Her Military Record
A PAC supporting the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Virginia says she fought overseas — something Earle-Sears has never said she did.
By John T. Seward | August 8, 2025 05:05 AMEditor’s note: After publication, John Fredericks, a conservative radio host and general manager of the John Fredericks Media Network, reached out to NOTUS and said his “team is responsible for writing and airing the ad in question.” Fredericks said Winsome Earle-Sears’ gubernatorial campaign was not involved in the radio ad’s creation.
“I reviewed the ad and it just got past me,” he said. “I own the company and I take full responsibility for that.”
“I value and appreciate the work; you ought to be holding everyone accountable,” Fredericks said after reading NOTUS’ reporting. “Nobody was trying to embellish her record, she’s got a great record. It was just an oversight and it got past me.”

That’s quite the salute.
I am not one to correct a Marine’s salute. Dumb way to die.
I will, she looks like she is taking the eye test at DMV.
Wiping a tear after the Marine’s hymn. Not to be confused with the TAH hymn.
No correction implied. That would be fatal.
Shes probably looking up at the flag. Maybe just a bad photo angle with her head leaning back but her hand is ridged and at her brow or where the visor would be if she was wearing a cover so I give her a pass. Yes, if she were in formation her eyes should be looking straight ahead, but she is a civilian now so her salute is ok in my book.
So….did WE-S jump on that gernade and tell her campaign to remove that shit YESTERDAY!? And then have a press conference to say, “no, I never served in overseas combat”?
Been married to a BAM for over 20 years and she can salute any way she wants, just saying…
LMAO, haven’t heard the term, Broad Ass Marine in years.
Heard the term, smart enough not to use it.
My first thought was bad ass Marine as a compliment.
lol
The first time I heard the phrase I was in bootcamp at Parris Island and we were heading back to the barracks after noon chow. A female platoon was getting ready to cross in front of us so our DI halted us to let them pass. Woman recruits are in the 4th battalion and back when I was in you almost never saw them and certainly never trained with them. But this particular day their DI was marching them somewhere that was near the second Battalion area and our DI stopped our platoon to let the platoon of Broad Ass Marines pass. He said it loud enough for their DI to hear it and she didn’t take too kindly to it and even had a few words with him. He laughed it off but that was the first time I heard the BAM term in full.
I have an aversion to getting my ass kicked by Marines, and I have just enough pride left that getting my ass kicked by a female Marine would leave me crying and babbling in the corner for the remainder of my years.
LMAO. Same here. I’m only 64 but I’m so weak and busted up now that my granddaughter could beat me up. And my wife added, “and it wouldn’t take much for her to do it.”
I’m 62. Lotta hard miles. I probably couldn’t even outrun your granddaughter.
LMAO.
Welp, she didn’t make the claim, and the campaign’s publicist admitted it was his oversight and quickly corrected the record. So anyone that wants to make this stolen valor is likely working for her opponent.
When it “just got past” a candidate for US Senate.
Trouble is, this same candidate spent time on social media
referring to this “American hero” as “the real deal”.
Trouble is… He isn’t. He wasn’t. He never was.
Phony Rambo campaign war tales and phonying 5 medals for years,
now he’s …..
PHONY “Endorsed by President Trump” TEDDY DANIELS
for Dare County Sheriff 2026 (NC / Outer Banks / OBX)
Q – Aren’t there 1 or more VG/TAH staffers
and/or longtime commenters
living in or near the Outer Banks?
“One” of us lurkers/rare commentors lives near Virginia Beach 🙂
Some parts of the Outer Banks are close than others…. its a loooong stretch.
Semper Fi
At least they did not shoot themselves, cannot remember how they left service or the number of PH’s they have….
Green Thumb,
Yesterday he repeated his (I was) “shot several times” LIE.
“Killed a bunch of terrorists”, “shit ton of gunfights”,
“they wanted to amputate my leg”, and more,
are part of his campaign tales during runs for Congress in 2020 and PA Lt. Governor in 2022, and now (again) in 2025 for County Sheriff.
Let’s not be minimizing the years of LIES by this conman.
That’s like giving Phil Monkress a pass.
Monkress video, June 2025
This is a non story and has nothing to do with “stolen valor”.
Far from it. The people involved showed integrity by immediately admitting it was a mistake and owning it.
I agree this doesn’t constitute stolen valor. There was no malicious intent to discredit her. From my perspective, this was a compelling topic that relates to stolen valor issues without actually crossing that line. It generated meaningful discussion in this community, which is why it was shared here.
No. 2!!!!! ^^^^
