@401, Joe Williams, yeah, I’ve seen the Navy’s Blue Angels’ “Fat Albert” do the JATO bit at one of the annual Air Shows near where I live, quite a sight to behold! I had to ride in a C130 going from Manas, Kyrgystan to Kabul for my tour there. Maybe someone “lased” the plane, but something triggered the anti-SAM system that blew flares and chaff, all I and my compadres hears was a loud *BAM!* and we felt it. Not immediately knowing what it was, and that being my first Combat Tour, you wouldn’t have been able to force even a carpet tack up my ass, it was puckered so tight, and I had one of my NCO’s cussing me about taking too long to get out of my seat once we landed, but I HAD to pull the seat webbing out of my ass first!!

I worked at a shop at Sharana right off the western end of the runway…. near the test fire range @ the ECP. One evening right around sundown, a C130 was on short final right above our heads and let the flares loose. All we could do was react after they hit the ground…. no time to run or duck. Luckily they did not catch any buildings or brand new MRAPS on fire. Some guys I worked with thought the pilots did it on purpose… I just figured it was an overlooked checklist item “disarm [flare] system”. I saw it happen several times on approach when they were a few miles out, but only once did I see it happen right overhead like that.

GDC, I don’t know if the flare dispenser system on the C-130 is the same as the one on the CH-47. During the early part of OIF, the flare system on the ‘hook would discharge for no apparent reason. Seems there was a glitch in the system that would shoot flares when the ‘hook flew over power lines at certain altitudes, IIRC. It was fixed a bit later, but did cause more than a bit of concern amongst some strap hangers.

The door gunner was a different trip in broad daylight, so I’m reasonably certain that wasn’t a malfunction – well, at least not an equipment malfunction. (smile)
Unfortunately, Fat Albert doesn’t do any more JATO takeoffs. Last one was at the P-Cola homecoming show in 2009. The Marine C-130s don’t do any more JATO either.

Because he eas worried that they were checking up on him how he was taking care of me. How he took care of me, I was home for 2 days, he had supposed mems training for 4 days. Left me at home with no food. Some people have staples. . Like cans of corn or peas, you know the food you buy and never get to it I didnt have shit. He leaves me alone for 4 days.. because of his mems training was so important. I didn’t even have money in the checking to buy pizza. He even took all the misc change. He took my pain meds, he figured out how many I should be aloud for 4 days and took the rest with him. I am a retired member of an organization that is part of the United States Air Force. It is the ONLY official organization of the USAF called the Civil Air Patrol. It is the Auxiliary of the USAF. It didn’t start off as a corporation it was a group of very heroic people that for one reason or another couldn’t serve but could still help during WW2. Later it became a civilian corporation in title only for liability and tax purposes only. My record with them involving 2 retirements, is exemplary and cover approximately 30 years. Today’s CAP is not the same when I entered in 1982. Many things have changed; uniform wear and other things including how one is addressed. To get to the point, no regulation existed at that time how an email signature had to be labeled to wit the following are seen in emails and letters from all ranks: Rank, Name, USAF Aux CAP Name, CAP, Rank Rank, Name, USAFaCAP In a regulation dated after my first retirement the official signature was thus: Name, Rank, CAP United State Air Force Auxiliary And has changed 2 more times to address the ranting’s of people like you demanding CLARITY. On EVERY I.D. are the four words UNITED STATES AIR FORCE Even in federal service a National Guards men uniform say ARMY or USAF yet it is understood to be part of that organization. What this means is simply this…What was written was not any attempt to “pretend” to be anything since it was never used to get any services, goods, money, or ANYTHING. It was just me being lazy back then in between my retirements. PERIOD! Never used before or since over 8 years ago.
