Bateman on guns – it’s time to shut up
Several of you have sent us a link today written by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Lake Bateman, who does happen to be an infantry officer and is currently assigned to HQ ARRC in the UK. His article in Esquire is pretty much what we expect to read from hippies at Enquirer, but not from an infantry officer who has sworn to protect and defend the Constitution. Basically, he wants you to own only weapons which were last modern in the late 19th century;
The only guns permitted will be the following:
a. Smoothbore or Rifled muzzle-loading blackpowder muskets. No 7-11 in history has ever been held up with one of these.
b. Double-barrel breech-loading shotguns. Hunting with these is valid.
c. Bolt-action rifles with a magazine capacity no greater than five rounds. Like I said, hunting is valid. But if you cannot bring down a defenseless deer in under five rounds, then you have no fking reason to be holding a killing tool in the first place.
If you think that gun ownership is limited to hunting, you have no f*cking reason to be participating in this debate, Bobbie.
We will pry your gun from your cold, dead, fingers. That is because I am willing to wait until you die, hopefully of natural causes. Guns, except for the three approved categories, cannot be inherited. When you die your weapons must be turned into the local police department, which will then destroy them. (Weapons of historical significance will be de-milled, but may be preserved.)
So, when you die, your gun dies with you. Never mind that you’ve invested thousands in your collection and you’d hoped it would be part of your legacy for your children and on down the line like Americans have done for genrations, Bobbie says ‘no’, so you can’t, and just because some woman shot another person over the results of a sports match. It’s not her fault, it’s all of us.
Police departments are no longer allowed to sell or auction weapons used in crimes after the cases have been closed. (That will piss off some cops, since they really need this money. But you know what they need more? Less violence and death. By continuing the process of weapon recirculation, they are only making their jobs — or the jobs of some other cops — harder.)
I say we stop buy back programs, because they don’t do anything anyway except those those cheapo Saturday night into drug cash for users. But, Bobbie, in his infinite wisdom, thinks they work, so he wants to expand the program;
We will initiate a nationwide “buy-back” program, effective immediately, with the payouts coming from the DoD budget. This buy-back program will start purchasing weapons at 200 percent of their face value the first year, 150 percent the second year, 100 percent the third year. Thereafter there will be a 10 year pause, at which point the guns can be sold to the government at 10 percent of their value for the next 50 years.
Yeah, because that’s what the DoD does so well – operate social welfare programs. Dumbass.
We will submit a new tax on ammunition. In the first two years it will be 400 percent of the current retail cost of that type of ammunition. (Exemptions for the ammo used by the approved weapons.) Thereafter it will increase by 20 percent per year.
Taxes are always a solution. Personally, I have several years worth of ammo to maintain my training for the day Bobbie decides to come for my guns.
The major gun manufactures of the United States, less those who create weapons for the federal government and the armed forces, will be bought out by the United States of America, for our own damned good.
Because the Federal Government always knows what’s best for us and always acts in our interests, right, Bobbie? Take healthcare for example.
It’s come to my attention that little Bobbie Bateman has taken to threatening people who disagree with him. Threaten me, Bobbie.
These opinions are those of the author and do not reflect the United States government, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Army, or any other official body. As for the NRA, they can sit on it.
They can’t sit on it while you have it jammed up your ass, Bobbie, you pole-smoking Leftist freak. Like I said, he’s got his Hello Kitties underoos bunched because some halfwit woman shot someone over the outcome of the Alabama game the other day. Millions of gun owners didn’t shoot anyone that day, including me, but apparently Bobbie Bateman wants to punish the tens of millions of gun owners because one was a moron. Do you think someone that stupid will turn in their guns so Bobbie will stop wetting his panties? Seriously?
Shut up, Bateman, you’re just another hand-wringing pussy from the Left.

Okay I got fixated on the claims made in post 86 and actually found the original study being passed off as some form of guaging soldiers willingness to fire on us citizens and confiscate their arms… It is a College Thesis, NOT an Official US Policy Study.
Anyhow, for anyone interested in reading it, it is 206 pages long.

Guys like Bateman are always going to be there, pandering is nothing new it’s why we have the word in the dictionary.
Many people take oaths they don’t understand and then dishonor their oath without knowing why, Bateman is that guy. He dishonors himself with an opinion contrary to his oath. If he can’t abide that oath he should resign and state the reasons why, that he finds the Bill of Rights and specifically the 2nd amendment to be repellent to his ideas of how to run a nation.
Otherwise he should take a nice big bite of a STFU sandwich and get back to work.
Personally, I’m kind of curious as to whether 1–he earned a CIB, 2–where and how he got it if he did.
Just wondering.
I took my time reading Bateman’s little essay and I re-read Scalia’s majoroity opinion in Heller. Bateman ought not to be so dismissive of Scalia’s work and, I believe, he would not be if he more fully understood leagal reasoning and writing. It is not for the closed minded or the terribly self righteous. Scalia detailed pertinent 2nd Amendment history, including contemporaneous writings and historical employments of the key terms found in the amendment. There are two that demand attention. The first is the term “militia,” which Scalia points out prefaces the purpose of the amendment. With that, Bateman must agree. But Scalia, unlike Bateman, doesn’t stop his analysis there. Instead, he moves to key term number two: “the People.” Scalia then points out that IF the militia were the organized militia (or, as Bateman, points out, the modern NG), then “the People” would be superfluous. That is, there would be no need to refer to the People if the 2nd Amendment merely referred to organized military units comprised of citizen soldiers. To this major pivot point, Bateman is unsuprisingly silent. Scalia reasons that the operative term, “the People,” therefore conveys the individual right of Americans to possess firearms. And, to our pleasure and Bateman’s dimay. that opinion is, indeed, the law of the land. As for Bateman’s silly wish list, it may as well have been written by a second grader or, at the risk of insulting second graders, the idiot commenter vwp, who, by the way, has never documented protesting anything.
@98, Proud Infidel- I hope you don’t mind, I enjoyed your “get Fucked” so much that I did the ol’ copy and paste on it! I will likely write it down, stick it in my wallet, and eventually memorize it- you get credit every time! Or you can tell me to pack iron…
Hey, stoopid protester guy- STFU!
There are people in this country who are so easily intimidated that they practically wet their pants in fear over the mere idea of guns.
Using that rather small demographic, which does NOT represent a majority of the population, as a basis for restricting gun ownership and access is ludicrous. It creates a false pretext that assumes everyone in the country is that easily intimidated by the sight of a weapon of any kind and that we’ll all just fall into line.
However, as NHSparky points out, we’re here because we won’t and don’t submit to tyrants. If we did, no one in the food service industry would be starting strikes for higher minimum wages right now. vwpissant assumes that something like that is all about the workers and wages. It isn’t. It isn’t even f@king marxism. It’s the basis of freedomm the right to speak up, and the right to protect yourself from abuse. Whether you patronize fast food joints or not is immaterial.
Of course, now that I brought up the McD’s workers, vwpestilence will stick his oar in and rage against capitalism, but without capitalism, THERE ARE NO JOBS, YOU ASSHOLE.
@87: When I worked in USASOC Surgeon’s Office, we had a saying: “Ranger Tab or Ranger Scroll?” You could always tell the guys who had served in the Regiment. They were much more squared away (in the right way) than guys who had just been to the school. As my office mate (who was tabbed) put it after going on an exercise with the Regiment,if it were raining in the 82nd, and you told a trooper with a tab to put on his wet weather gear, he’d say “I don’t need snivel gear. I’m a Ranger.” And teh person asking would sah “Airborne. Huaah.” In the Regiment, if they told you to put on your snivel gear and you said that, they’d say “what part of F@#$%%^& put on your snivel gear don’t you understand?” Because they’d all proved whatever they needed to prove, and were more interested in soldier welfare (and, in turn, having soldiers available for the mission). So there is a real attitude difference between officers who had served in the Regiment and officers who had only been to the school. And one of the best GOs I ever worked for (James Jackson) was a former Regimental Commander–and a real out of the box thinker. In 1997, the DOPMA Promotion Rate, which is the number of officers selected for promotion by a given board divided by the number of officers in the primary zone, was 65% for selection to lieutenant colonel. In 2002, it had jumped to in excess of 90%, and remained at that level until 2013. In fact, in 2006-2010, the DOPMA selection rate was IN EXCESS OF 100%. I know this is “inside baseball” talk, but to put it in simpler terms, to get a rate in excess of 100%, you have to basically select the equivalent of everybody in the primary zone, plus above the zoners and below the zoners. In other words, from 2006-2010, the only way you could not get promoted would be if you impregnated the division commander’s teenage daughter. And if his wife liked you, then you still might… Read more »
LTC Bateman seems to me to have decided to fall on the side of the “intellectuals” who believe they should be running the show here. He likes the taste of his own bath water. He is much smarter than most of us, and likes to exhibit that intelligence in liberal magazines. He is building his street cred amongst his fellow intellectuals and getting ready for the day he decides he doesn’t want to play army any more. Fuck him and Molon Labe motherfucker.
VWP, don’t go away mad, just go away. You are a petty amusement to us. Like the stupid kid in your neighborhood who huffed a lot of paint thinner and was never right again. Will you eat bugs for a quarter??
The big people come here to talk about serious shit, not so serious shit and shit in general. VWP, you are just full of shit. There is a difference. Now go home before you piss someone off.
@ 98 … Can you just cut out the noise and get to the point! (sarc)

I wonder if he forgot that there are millions of veterans that remember their oaths? Or the fact that just because we are out of uniform now that doesnt mean we wont still try to carry out those oaths come hell or high water.
this is a really really disturbing report. The suggestions made by this LTC look very much like the secret plan to control gun violence in america that I drew up in 2008. Although it has been made ever so slightly more extreme. For example I never suggested that guns could not be inherited.
What is most disturbing though is that I shared that plan with only three people and I did not give them permission to share it further. Though to be fair I did not tell them to keep it to themselves either. But the whole idea of keeping a lid on that plan was to spring at a surprise before conservatives could react to it.
But now since I am pissed off at liberals and considering becoming a conservative I may have to see if I can find my own copy of the plan and send it to the NRA so that they can take counter measures before it is to late.
There was an old joke about the symbolism of the various rank insignia, explaining the meaning of the various bars, stars, and eagles for officers – the punch line was that the history of the MAJ and LTC’s leafs went all the way back to ancient times when the tradition started of always putting oak leaves over their pricks.
The LTC is a real piece of shit. He tells a homosexual black person that they have to think a certain way and tells a Special Forces Persian Gulf War Veteran who retired in 1996 that he abandoned his country during time of war.
so a lever action rifle (whose design predates the bolt) and the pump shotgun would be illegal, but the modern bolt action or double barrel would be legal. How kind of him not to stipulate side-by-sides – after all, over/unders are more modern so in his lexicon must be bad. I’ll bet he rails against “assault rifles” and “high capacity clips”, too. Typical uninformed douchebag.
Fuck stick is also a “Historian” and has been a prolific writer since he was a 2nd Lt. Has spent time in the “pantygon”, and now he is on a long tour in a place where he has few troops around him.
My take. He has been a “sexual intellectual” (fucking know-it-all) since he has been in. Pretty sure he’s West Point.
Hes a guy who does a lot of reading, but once he puts his opinion out there, it’s non-negotiable. He has spoken, and those that disagree are dumber than dogshit in his opionion.
@108, thanks for clearing that up and shedding light on how someone that arrogant slid through the cracks. Just hoping that he never gets any type of command anywhere.I wouldn’t trust him to lead a platoon a starving men to the chow hall.
Jeez. In the same thread appear the alpine ass yodeler AND the vietnam war protester whose idea of protest is jotting down words spontaneously and hoping against hope that they convey some semblance of cohesive thought.
I’m sure his troops would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.
@119. Nice one. I suppose that if an EM can become Secretary of Defense, then a LTC can become something or other in The Emperor’s court. Talk about your useful idiots. Bateman can’t be married. He is too smitten with himself.
@98 That was simply poetic. (*sniff*)
@105 – what LTC Shitbag really doesn’t comprehend is the English language. I address his perfidious spew here: http://thelibertyzone.wordpress.com/2013/12/04/time-to-take-on-a-dumbass/
Specifically, he misses the following analysis from a recognized language expert.
(1) The sentence does not restrict the right to keep and bear arms, nor does it state or imply possession of the right elsewhere or by others than the people; it simply makes a positive statement with respect to a right of the people.”
(2) The right is not granted by the amendment; its existence is assumed. The thrust of the sentence is that the right shall be preserved inviolate for the sake of ensuring a militia.”
The right to keep and bear arms is not said by the amendment to depend on the existence of a militia. No condition is stated or implied as to the relation of the right to keep and bear arms and to the necessity of a well-regulated militia as a requisite to the security of a free state. The right to keep and bear arms is deemed unconditional by the entire sentence.”
Bateman can screech all he wants about the interpretation of the Second Amendment, but minds smarter than him (hell, that’s almost anyone with two brain cells to rub together) have already conceded that the Second Amendment does, in fact, say what it says. Those minds include Laurence Tribe, Alan Dershowitz, Roy Copperud and the fucking Supreme Court.
So Bateman can eat a dick. That’s probably how he got his O-5, anyway. He should be used to the taste by now.
I guess bateman’s never seen that part in “Josey Wales” where the last Confederates turn in their weapons only to be machined gunned by the Yankees.
I think that’s what bateman is really aiming at.
There is so much about what that guy wrote that confuses me as to how he came up with all that. There are many, many points to make about how retarded all this is, but there is one that stuck out to me that I will address now. His obsession with only allowing weapons that he perceives as “less deadly” and less likely to be used to commit mass murder. Specifically the bolt action rifle. Given that he is an infantry officer, he should know that the M24 SWS is a hell of a deadly accurate bolt action rifle used by snipers (I am aware that snipers today are using SASS and other updated bolt guns, this is just outlining one of the more traditional sniper weapons). As an infantry officer he should know that a sniper with a bolt action rifle is one of the biggest force multipliers that commanders have in their tool kit. This makes me ask the question of why he puts bolt action rifles in the category of the “less deadly” weapons? It seems to me that the most logical answer is sheer incompetence as an infantry officer (big surprise right?), who never truly learned how to use weapons and personnel to effectively kill the enemy and break his shit. That’s cool Bateman, my 700 is my favorite rifle anyway, and the one I’m most efficient with.
Twist,
that is a brilliant sound bite. I am going to put that in to my reportwha. By helping me you have helped improve the real IRA. But if the liberals keep annoying me and I switch sides I will bring that sound bite that you taught me back to the side that it originated on.
What surprises me the most about this is how surprised some people are that a high ranking officer would think this way.
Think about it: Officers, especially at the field grade level, live in a world where there whims can become orders with the force of law behind them.
Fortunately for us, the United States is a Constitutional Republic and not a battalion under Bateman’s command. Even if the US were a kingdom or a dictatorship, it’s doubtful most of his laws could be enacted, much less implemented, so in reality what this article is, is just another lefty fantasy (yes, there are lefties in the military, and why shouldn’t there be? Think about it, lefties love power just as much as anybody else, maybe more and being an officer in the military is a great way to be able to exercise power with very little accountability)
Basically it’s mental masturbation: Probably felt good while he was writing it but will have no effect on the future.
I would also like to add that I feel sorry for anyone who has to work for Bateman. I am sure this steaming pile of fail adjusts evals based on how much ass kissing they do.
He seems like the kind of ooficer that would leave his troops in the field eating MRE’s to go feed himself some “hot chow” and take a shower, then come out in a clean uniform and tell them to stay motivated!
The piece of shit should be arrested and tried for failure in his oath.
If punishment for failing the oath don’t happen then the oath is meaningless and should no longer be administered.
@123 Thanks I will see the movie josie wells just for that scene! I always like the scene in the gettysberg movies where custer and the michigan cavalry smash jeb stewert! My next favorite scene is when confederate general armistead is bayoneted by the boys in blue!
I used to have a bumber sticker on my american made car that had a confederate flag with a no parking sign insignias over it. “Thats right ignorant southern white trash you should never forget THAT YOU LOST!” Somebody ripped it off.
senility has set in. VWP doesn’t know what decade it is.
@130&131, dude,,,,,,,, please, you need to take your meds now!!!!!!!! Not later, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Preferably by loading them into a 12-gauge 3″ shell and pulling the trigger. I hate it when I take a pill and it gets stuck in my throat, don’t you, vwp?
@132 …or what planet he’s on, either.
Wow. Just wow. vwpestilence wants everyone who legally owns guns to turn them in and be slaughtered by the police, once that happens.
That’s what s/he/it is saying. vwpusbucket is going to celebrate the murders of people who obey and then are executed for doing so.
Well, I finally figured it out. vwpussypusucketslurper is a neo-Nazi who wants Hitler and Pol Pot cloned so that the innocent can be slaughtered on someone else’s orders, as in the Warsaw ghettoes, the death camps in Europe, and the killing fields in Campuchea.
Now you know what that pond-bottom scum really is.
A lot of people here seem surprised by this guy because of his rank and mos. We all know there are 10% everywhere. LtCol is a mid grade manager. For a 20 year career starting as a 2nd Lt, that is average. I had a Bn CO when I was a DI in MCRD San Diego that was infantry and hadn’t been in his MOS since Plt command. The first manager I had when I retired was a retired Major, Army Infantry, Ranger tab, never served a day in a line unit. And God, yes, he was a turd of epic proportions. Having said that, having read some of his comments, this fella is an ass-hat that should consider a lat move to the French army. Jackass.
Lips: One pair permanently affixed to ass of CIC nonpurgeable.
@131
Well, you put a racist bumpers sticker like that on your car and you’re lucky getting it ripped off is all that happened.
@136
I’m not sure about the Hitler and Pol Pot clones. He’s a liberal, and they usually idolize Stalin.
I just based that on the things he said, and not much else. The apt comparisons are Hitler and Pol Pot. I probably should have included Stalin, too, because he was a more brutal mass murderer than either Hitler or Pol Pot.
Then, we also have the more recent scum: the entire Kim family running Norkland since the 1950s; Saddam Hussein, who gassed his own village; any jihadists; Kobe, the African guy who is in hiding now.
The list is mostly endless, but they all fit the same profile: do as I say or die, and when those threatened do as they’re told, they die anyway.
Murderer is as murderer does, eh? So vwpusbucket fits right into that whole fan-boi meme of worshiping the scum of the earth, just by applauding that scene from ‘Josey Wales’.
On top of that, he can’t spell.
It’s WALES, you asshole – WALES. Get that into that dormant organ you have for a brain. Try using your brain instead of just sitting on it.
vwpimp was probably involved with that Sandy Hook “fundraiser” that had to be cancelled due to lack of interest.
Yeah-He’s pig ignorant (doesn’t know the difference between Stuart and Stewart when referring to James Ewell Brown), but he’s also that special kind of stupid who doesn’t understand that that moment reflects rank betrayal by the redlegs which Josey eventually punishes at the end of the movie.
I love how he pretends that he had some bumper sticker or other on his car as if that reflects some sort of moral stand on his part. If he had been alive in the 1860s he would have lit out for the territories and away from the war as fast as he could slither there on his (yellow) belly.
@141
I dunno, he might just have stayed and fought. Unlike some, though, who fought for the Confederacy because that’s where their citizenship lay, VWP would have expressly fought for the right to own and abuse slaves.
malclave-that’s consistent with his worldview to be sure, but he would just as likely have gone west and sold rotgut to Indians (using the Josey Wales theme we’ve got going here, he would be comparable to the medicine salesman Josey encounters on the ferry). Leaving aside his cowardice, I can’t see him fighting in any capacity. Neither army would have wanted someone so obviously stupid to say nothing of his low moral character.
Were it to come down to it, Bateman would be one of those officers who would obey the order to fire on American citizens and take their guns, but we all agree that won’t happen.
I looked him up and found a few of his articles at Small Wars Journal, and his writing style in those articles pretty much reflect similiar drivel in the one posted here. He’s not an impressive or compelling writer, so I’m led to believe he’s a shitty leader too.
http://smallwarsjournal.com/author/robert-bateman
Why would this clown not face court martial or some sort of punitive action for speaking out this way when others have been punished for far less controversial words expressed publicly? Simply because his supervisors are cowards while all the others who were punished either had supervisors/CO’s with the courage to enforce the rules, all the rules, or were ordered to punish something which was not on the PC approved list of appropriate comments for DoD personnel to make publicly.
Think I found out what popped the cork on this freak’s bottle He was a cuckhold. Here’s a bit of info he posted about himself in one of his idiotic commentaries. This one about how R. E. Lee should have been hanged.
QUOTE” A little more than a decade ago I was going through a divorce. It was pretty ugly, and emotionally, it left me distracted and out of sorts. The Ex had decided on a course of action with another fellow, and I really could not stand by for that. Allegiances and oaths and vows sort of mean a lot to somebody like me, and this being the second time, that was the end of things. Somehow, however, it was I who ended up moving out of our nice home.
What followed was stereotypical for a divorce of this sort. I spent a lot of time after work going to local bars. All of them within walking distance from my apartment on a hillside known as Marye’s Heights, in the town where I lived. This was 2002.” UNQUOTE
Allegiances and oaths and vows sort of mean a lot to somebody like me
Well, except maybe for the part to “support and defend the Constitution”.
Actually, the ferryman on the tow rope ferry who took Josey Wales across the river is more like vwpissonalivewire, switching songs to suit the customer’s politics.
And Bateman? A self-serving, sandal-licking lackey who would attempt to take the guns, but find a hole in his own shirt for his effort. Just because he’s pissed off at his – what? 2nd ex-wife, he has to take his annoyance out on other people? Yes, that is definitely the sign of maturity in a military man.
rb325th @99: “…that bull shit survey story…is in part urban legend and part truth.”
But did you actually read the linked story to determine how much of IT was true and how much was urban legend? Or did you simply scan over it quickly with your “aha-it’s-that-bullshit-survey-conspiracy-theory” filter cranked up to 11?
Or worse, did you not even bother to look at the link, preferring to get all indignant based on the brief section I cited? B/c the section I cited only summarized a few of the questions that were actually on the survey, with no motives or sources — official or otherwise — attributed.
rb325th @99: “The Survey…was done…by a Naval Officer…made it up himself…no official backing or support…part of his work on his advanced degree at the Naval Postgrad School.”
Uh, yeah. The story says that.
rb325th @99: “It was NOT an OFFICIAL Survey…”
The story never SAID it was official. Neither did I.
rb325th @99: “…it was NOT given for the reasons the articles you linked to suggest at all.”
And those reasons are…what, exactly? (Cited from the actual article, not from your hastily-jumped-to conclusion.)
I think I know why you jumped to your unwarranted conclusions: You’ve seen the same breathless emails about the survey that I’ve seen — the ones concluding it must have originated from some secret new-world-order conspiracy to use the US military to disarm the citizenry.
But just b/c some people who’ve cited the survey have gone all “conspiracy theory” doesn’t mean that anybody else who might cite it is just as paranoid as they are.
We’re on the same side, rb325th. (And so art JPFO and Will Grigg.) And unlike the stories cited here a few days ago, none of us are actually bullshitting. So how about you knock off the friendly fire?
