Amanda Bass pleaded guilty to pretending to be a wounded Marine for 10 years, scamming charities, churches, and GoFundMe donors out of thousands.
Gold Star Mom Janne Zaccognino—who lost her actual Marine son in Afghanistan—smelled the BS immediately and went full detective.
“She said she was the ONLY survivor of her entire platoon,” Zaccognino said. “A platoon has like 40 people. That’s not a unit, that’s a Final Destination movie.”
The red flags were everywhere: Bass wouldn’t name her unit, had military ID photos where she was smiling in a white t-shirt with a cute bob, and claimed she died multiple times in Afghanistan before doctors gave her chargeable cyborg organs (because apparently she’s part Roomba).
Real Marines looked at her photos and basically said: “This looks like a Glamour Shots session, not military documentation.”
Bass allegedly scammed $8,000 from GoFundMe, got a free HVAC system, a wheelchair ramp, and milked charities while never serving a single day in the military.
She faces sentencing in May and could get decades in prison—plenty of time to charge those bionic organs. She’s currently out on her own recognizance, presumably Googling “do prisons have outlets.”
