According to the article, Columbia County Board of Education Chairman David Dekle asked Sleeper to verify his claims in a public meeting the other day;
“Mr. Sleeper, for the good of the Columbia County School District, I respectfully ask that you provide a full and complete explanation of your military service without further delay,” Dekle said. “Please confirm that you are in fact a former Army Ranger, having completed the necessary requirements to legitimately claim that distinction– that you did in fact earn your Ranger Tab or Scroll during your period of service. If not, please correct the record and end this distraction so that this Board may return its full attention to the business at hand.”
Typical of the Mike Sleeper with whom I’ve had contact, he responded;
“Honestly, I just at the moment, pity you,” Sleeper told Dekle. “That’s all I have to say.”
If that isn’t shedding some light on Sleeper and his military service, nothing will.
Sleeper had the opportunity to speak up and defend his military record.
If he is a Ranger, say it loud and say it proud.
Find someone, anyone, to corroborate your military service. Show some kind of evidence. Any kind of valid evidence.
Instead, Sleeper verbally attacked the person asking questions. That kind of response will get him nowhere fast. It shows he’s vulnerable and that he’s trying to shame those seeking the truth.
Yeah, Sleeper has emailed me and left messages on my phone demanding that I take down the post about him based on nothing, claiming that he has documentation. But I’ve received nothing – no documentation, no proof.
I hear from locals that his Father-in-law, Ron Cross, a County Commissioner, has always protected him with a Boss Hog heavy handedness. Locals are afraid of Boss Hog, but they want Sleeper gone.

When this went up last month, I noticed that one of the articles was about his speech to a program run by the Georgia National Guard. The head of the Georgia NG is an actual Ranger, BG Joseph Jarrard, and his office was alerted to the fact that a poser was playing in his sandbox. Don’t know what happened, if anything, but at least this is getting some attention in those circles.
Every Ranger has a hundred “Ranger cool guy pics” they can show at a moments notice…
That he doesn’t HAVE ONE…especially in his self made power point presentation talks volumes.

Hmmm…perhaps Sleeper is referring to SSG Bob Beiswanger who was in A/1-75 at the time. Beiswanger was tough dude and went on to be one of the winners of the grueling Best Ranger Competition. Beiswanger retired and now works as a civilian at Ft. Bragg. Perhaps he remembers Private Sleeper. He should be easy to track down.
So…some of Sleeper’s story may be PARTIALLY true. Looks to me like Sleeper didn’t make it through the Ranger Indoctrination Program at 1-75 and then got sent to Alaska. Then it appears to me he got in some trouble and got booted from the Army. If so, that means there are a few key questions for Sleeper. Did you actually graduate from Airborne school? Were you ever actually assigned to 1-75 and report in? Why did you leave 1-75? Why did you leave the Army as a Private E-1?

It’s also fairly obvious from the DD-214 that he was not a Ranger. The chronology is wrong given the training time required.
If you dig into some of the background of the politics going on, it seems apparent Sleeper is at least partially collateral damage in a local feud that’s been going on for a few years. While part of that involves County Commission Chairman Ron Cross, Sleeper’s father-in-law, another key player has been County Administrator Scott Johnson who was hired in 2011. Since then, there have been the exits of some high-level department heads which appear to have caused some bad blood.

Someone in the know fill me in – why would an 11B go through Jackson in 1985? I know they have IN units at Jackson now, but back then thought it was admin/CSS. Woulda thought it would be OSUT at Benning – went to my buddy’s little brother’s graduation there in 2002 and he was NY ARNG! I was RA in 85, and don’t remember this as policy – enlighten me. I went through basic at Dix, so I know they did 11B OSUT other than Benning at times, but Jackson?
He didn’t go through Fort Jackson for OSUT.
The South Carolina MEPS just happens to occupy ground on Fort Jackson itself.
After processing, he rode the bus down to Benning to start OSUT. Same deal for people who went into the AF, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard from South Carolina. They all are inducted at the MEPS at Jackson, but ship out to their respective initial training sites for whatever service they joined.
It does get confusing when it comes to Fort Jackson being both a all services MEPS and a Army Basic Training site.
The Sleepers time in service meets the two year rule so he might be eligible for VA medical benefits . But looks like he got the boot with no reserve obligation time so we can bet , he got an RE-code 4 on the DD214 , so his time was not good so no VA medical … in the VA lingo he is NOT A VETERAN…. on a side note the mention of Boss Hogg reminded that the actor who played J.D HOGG Sorell Booke was an Army Veteran as well as sidekick Rosco P. Coltrane actor James Best
James Best was also a fine guitarist…he portrayed Jim Lindsey on a couple Andy Griffith Show episodes.
