James Walls; phony UH-1 pilot
Someone sent us their work on this James Walls fellow who moderates a Facebook group called UH-1 Huey Helicopter where he gives everyone the impression that he was a Vietnam helicopter pilot in the 1st Cavalry Division;
Well, he was in the Cav – 3rd Squadron 12th Calvary of the 3rd Armored Division in Germany from 1967 – 1969. In 1969, he went to Vietnam and he was assigned to the 169th Engineer Battalion in the Delta region. Funny assignment for a pilot, huh? Well, he was a parts supply guy, a TAMMS clerk, not a pilot. Not in the Cav and flying a desk. There’s nothing wrong with being a supply guy, there is if you pretend to be something you’re not. You’ll notice in the pictures above, he’s wearing aviator wings on his jacket and a 1st Cavalry patch – he was never in the 1st Cav. He’s wearing a 3rd Armored Division patch in the one picture – that’s correct.
He wants you to think that he was in the 229th Aviation Regiment;

The 1st Cavalry Division has a simple rule about wearing the stetson; you actually had to have served in the 1st Cavalry Division. Walls might be claiming to have served with the 1st Cavalry Division based on being a member of the 12th Cavalry, but the 12th wasn’t folded into the 1st Cavalry Division until 1972 at Fort Hood.
For those aquatic types who might be confused by traditional Army terms, a “Regiment” denotes a unit of infantry while a “Cavalry” is of similar size mounted on horse. No true cavalryman would ever use the term “Cavalry Regiment.” It’s redundant.

Nope, I’m not confusing a brigade and a regiment, NBC. Brigades tend to be larger than regiments, task oriented, and with combined arms. When the 173rd Airborne Brigade was in Viet Nam, for example, the bulk of it was made up of four battalions of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, but supplemented with dozens of other kinds of units.
My intent was in no way to rag on the 12th ACR. It was merely to point out traditional usage. If you were with the 1st Cavalry Division circa 1972, for example, and happened to refer to Custer’s old 7th as a regiment, you would probably have been considered a hopeless doofus. Just because the Army decides to call a unit a certain thing doesn’t mean it always has to make sense– but it’s also true that times change.
Personally, I’ve always thought it was cool back when cavalry units had even more specific designators such as dragoons or hussars based on tasking. It’s also interesting to consider that Union cavalry commander John Buford, originally with the 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons, was able to use a small force to delay the Confederate advance at Gettysburg by having his troopers act as dismounted infantry. Something considered unusual at the time but within the traditional dragoon mission profile.
Good stuff Perry. I guess I was more focused on the cross-terminologies (Company/Troop, Battalion/Squadron, Brigade/Regiment). It made sense at the time.

In my time with 4/11, we went from Air Troop and Combat Aviation Troop 11ACR to HHT through F Troop 11th Combat Aviation Squadron (11CAS) 11ACR to eventually M through Q Troop (I think) 4th Squadron 11ACR.

I tried telling the creator of this Huey helicopter fb site Peter Petrovcic that he was Poser & was not a pilot he wanted to know how I knew and I told him it was verified in his military records, he ignored it, he likes their >19,000 members and the fact that walls is the only one of the bunch that is from the US, all the rest are from over-seas Solvenia, Serbia and Albania. Do you tube search on Petrovcic he has put a lot of videos on you tube that would produce viewers. There is a reason for all this, and the UH1 huey helicopter site. Problem I have is that the main administrator is a fake. I am concerned to that the largest portion of the members are former or current military from the US. Besides the 214 from Mary, I verified Army flight school records and he never went through flight training not even a wash out, which he would have been. I actually talked to Walls and yes he told me that he was a pilot and in Nam in I corp (which matched his time/place there while he was a spec 4 in supply). I told him that I was a flight instructor at Wolters and wondered
what class he was in, he said “he did not remember” I ask well when did you get your wings, said he “did not remember that either”. I said come on man no one forgets those things. He came back with “well it is all classified” I really would like to see this fake be totally exposed. The nearest he my have come to flying could have been a door gunner, those guys were recruited from all other mos’s. Twice on AD I was able to secure an assignment back into Aviation and during my last had my life saved during a Huey crash at Ft. Carson because the pilot (Merle Kjer) knew the “crash and survive” characteristics of a Huey due to his many similar experiences in VN. This Walls guy is an insult to men like Mr. Kjer and the others who really were the real deal. So, fuck him!

It’s obvious that this James Walls guy clearly wouldn’t know a hot LZ if someone threw him out of the side door of a Huey from 500′ AGL and he landed in the middle of one. Yet for some reason, real Army pilots and aircrew (many of whom are probably real combat veterans) are putting on their blinders and actually trying to defend this guy’s lies.
Some things are just so fundamentally wrong that they are beyond comprehension.
Of course my first instinct is to make Cav jokes and why would someone want to pretend to be Cav. That said again we have someone with good service who chose to crap on it. That I think irritates me more than those who never served because they should no better. There is nothing wrong with not being at the pointy end of the poodle. It take a lot to make the whole thing work. Of course he looks more likely to have woken to the fresh smell of doughnuts in the morning verse napalm.
Not only is there nothing wrong with it, it is the mark of a consummate professional that does a less than glamorous job as well as they can for the sake of mission accomplishment.

Guys, two men I knew growing up and respect greatly were – unlike Walls – Army aviators who indeed flew in Vietnam. One’s still with us; one is now deceased.
Do them a favor – and burn this lying bastard to the ground (figuratively speaking, of course).
The simplest way to stop one of these jerks is to put him in a helicopter with a real chopper pilot and tell him to take the controls. That would shut him up in 2 seconds.
Just stop him as soon as possible.

The fact that Jimmy Walls wasn’t a pilot was pointed out several months ago to me. So I simply asked him, to call me….he wouldn’t do that. That was enough for me. Several people, like me just stopped visiting. Now, I have know Daniel Jaggi for several years, on FB, and he is very interested in anything that flies and worked maintenance in the Brazilian Military. This still a good site. Stuff happens.

Just offering a sitrep on what I see. Mind you, my only qualifications are decades of trolling the internet. I see Jimmy there bought some established bandwidth from a couple of eastern Europeans, then renamed it and started theming the page. He probably paid $1,000 US or more. I can’t see him turning that over to ANYONE else. Reason I say that is because despite having 20,000 members, he NEVER trusted anyone else to admin the page with him. It was always just him. (The gypsies listed as admins don’t count. They stick around to commandeer your page in case you bug out). That’s just my two cents.

Hey Joe C, what is this “Tool Shed” page about? Anything that I might contribute to? I will hit it with a request, and then take a look around. If I can relate to things there, I will hang around.
You guys want to know what I find disturbing? The amount of sensitive INFOSEC I see on that page being disseminated by active and retired service members. Before my friends and I started swarming the page, I took a few hours and scanned it for proof to screen shot, assuming he would start sanitizing the page once we started attacking him. I literally found two, YES TWO, conversations with two different active duty Army pilots disseminating the best way to bring down an Apache and a Chinook. Its like they have no concept that the avatar they are posting to might very well be a Haj in Iraq or Syria trying to harm the very brothers and sisters we work with. This goes well past some harmless SV nonsense. This is downright dangerous. Just some food for thought.
Then, Joe, you need to contact them and tell them to shut off the flow ASAP.

I visited the UH-1 Huey Helicopter page, the one that is not military and is dedicated exclusively to the venerable Huey. Funny thing. The page has a photo atop it of two helicopters. Both are US military and neither is a Huey. So much for that. There is much banter regarding Walls’ present predicament. Some of it is horrifying and some sensible. Whatever. They are all free to associate themselves with whomever they wish. That doesn’t make them bad people. It just makes them assholes.
Maybe Lars can do a paper/study on folks who enable embellishers, liars and those who choose to dishonor our Military Men and Women by stealing Valor.
