James Michael Waldby; scamming phony
A couple of weeks ago, someone told us about how this James Michael Waldby dude had scammed a motorcycle club in the Midwest out of a couple of hundred bucks by claiming to be a veteran and they wanted us to check on him. This is the DD214 that he showed them;
Pretty high sped, huh? Yeah, first off, I see where his DD214 says that he was in 3/75th, but they’re not at Fort Stewart, they’re on the other side of Georgia at Benning. I don’t know what an “infantry specialist” is, but I know it’s not an 11B30. Two Distinguished Service Crosses and two Silver Stars and 4 Purple Hearts would make him famous in our community. No jump school, though, no Ranger Tab. He really didn’t know what he was doing when he forged this thing.
So, here’s what his FOIA looks like;
Thirteen whole months stationed in Hawai’i, discharged as a private which explains why he didn’t know what to include in his forged DD214. Scamming the motorcycle club wasn’t the first time he’d done that, either. Back in 2009, he tried the same thing with a church group back home;
Police say James Michael Waldby, 43, of Hendersonville, NC, told local church officials that he had just “flown in from Heathrow” and needed money for gasoline to get to Ft. Bragg, NC. A local church gave him a voucher good for $10 worth of gas from a convenience store.
When Waldby, decided to try his luck at another church, the clerk became suspicious and used an online search to determine that Waldby was actually a fugitive from North Carolina. She called the police.
When officers found him at Presto’s convenience store, Waldby told them he’d been staying with an aunt and uncle in Pendergrass, but could not tell police their names, address or telephone number.
He also had $103 in cash at the time he was arrested.
Police charged Waldby with theft by deception and driving with a suspended license, but the Jackson County Jail refused to take Waldby in because he claimed to have and untreatable staph infection.
The police then took him to the Flying J travel plaza on Maysville Road and released him.
The motorcycle club that contacted us said they made a police report, too, but the prosecutor wasn’t willing to chase him down and prosecute him for a few hundred bucks. They tell me that he’s headed to Iowa now – probably pulling the same shit. And everyone lets him get away with it. Well, until he gets killed by someone who doesn’t think his scam is so victimless as some local prosecutor.

Looking at the FOIA reply, I see no reserve time. And since the total commitment in 1989 was 8 years, under normal circumstances he’d have reserve time (even if only IRR) as well as active duty time.
I’m guessing the tool received either a chapter or medical admin discharge that disqualified him from further service. And based on his documented conduct after his discharge, I’d bet against medical.
Please don’t call the FBI on a forged federal document with a scammer travelling from state to state stealing. It’s Christmas and the FBI has better things to do…like shopping.

The fonts throughout DD214 are inconsistent, indicating that he put his paws on someone else’s discharge documents and made alterations. Under 18. Remarks, the font is consistent until you reach the third from bottom line in this section – were he fradulently added, to the already altered document, the following; Distinghuished Service Cross// (2nd Award)// Purple Heart// (4th Award)// Bronze Star// (2nd Award)// Silver Star// (2nd Award)// NOTHING FOLLOWS
However, re-reading box 13. Decorations…, Army (4th Award)// Armed Forces// …. Left hanging by themselves makes no sense…. Okay, my head hurts and I need headache aspirin and more caffeine.
First thing I noticed, last thing I concluded. I count at least 3 fonts (Courier, Arial and Calibri) in there. Calibri should always be considered especially suspicious. It’s a relatively new font, and for the last 2 or 3 years, it’s been Microsoft Office’s default font, but no actual users seem to want to use it as a default for anything, especially government agencies. On older suspect docs, Times Roman (the old default) is always good for a raised eyebrow.
And from a non-.mil here … WTF is a “senior sergeant” in the US military? I’ve read that term used by the old Red Army, but I’ve never heard of that rank in the US before.

I did ask my brother for the bill statement for our fathers funeral. I would have been willing to send the money to the funeral home for the bill but one was never provided. I never asked money from my father. I did have the blessing to have a final week with my dad and be daddy’s little girl one last. One thing that he told me was that he was sad that he could not help pay for my college. Well dad because of your service in the military I am able to get scholarships for your service. Yes I was beyond devastated because my father told me that he wanted me to be presented the flag because all his sons (this include his stepson) could and did join the military. I was unable to join because I am an asthmatic. My moms fuel pump went into the truck and James would not pick his own sister and brother whom drove from NY to NC for the funeral. Yes I did ask to view my father body before the caste was closed for a few moment to say my good byes to my father and place a few moments in the casket as well.
