Mint Hill man accused in New Year’s Eve terror plot denied bond in federal court

Story by Destiny Richards, Jesse Pierre
An 18-year-old Mint Hill man accused of planning an ISIS-inspired attack on New Year’s Eve will remain in federal custody without bond, after a judge ruled prosecutors presented substantial and, at times, chilling evidence during a detention hearing this week.

Investigators say Christian Sturdivant had been planning the attack for nearly a year and was under constant FBI surveillance in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, when authorities say the plan was set to be carried out.

Sturdivant is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Prosecutors said Sturdivant described himself as a “soldier of ISIS,” telling undercover agents the group gave him a sense of belonging and that he admired them for killing Americans.

According to federal authorities, Sturdivant came under investigation after reaching out on social media to accounts he believed were connected to ISIS.

This isn’t San Francisco with cash-free bail.

These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of men and women.

Glad they stopped him.

There are good folks still at the FBI trying to keep us safe. They deserve our thanks.

Not sure what the Gun Bunny would say about a 1911-22…

I’m not even sure what I’d say about it… except… why bother?

KoB, “Nice pop gun. But expensive.”
He could say, “About as useful as tits on a boarhog.”
Or, “About like puttin’ lipstick on a pig. Shure is purdy, but it’s still a pig.”

The only reason I can think of to have something like that would be to learn the manual-of-arms for a 1911, without the expense of shooting 45ACP.
But if you want to just plink, there are a lot less expensive guns to shoot 22LR through.

Low cost ammo training piece is about all I can come up with.

1911’s are supposed to go BOOM!, not pop.

Have handled one of these and it does indeed come across as a delightfully smaller nicely made 1911. I disagree about it being a better trainer than the SiG/GSG 1911-22s – they are the same size as a standard 1911 and until you go to disassembly the controls are identical. I think as an exact a copy as a trainer as possible makes for better training, but that is just me. One definite advantage to the SiG/GSG guns – unlike the Browning, the barrels are fixed and already threaded, so for use with a suppressor they are much easier and cheaper to use than Browning’s. Second advantage – thy cost literally half as much.
