Getting Mexico’s attention with “military strikes” mention

| December 28, 2024 | 31 Comments

Donald Trump previously stated his willingness to utilize militarily strikes against cartel assets in Mexico. Mexican officials are pondering if this is serious, or if it is a ploy to get the Mexican government to do something substantive. This action would have ramifications that may end up working against us. However, Trump voiced other methods that he would also use. One tactic involves putting Mexican officials on blast for choosing drug cartel interests over controlling drugs and illegal immigration.

From The Wall Street Journal:

During his campaign, Trump said he would take military action against cartels, impose a naval embargo to prevent drugs from crossing the border and designate cartels and their leaders as foreign terrorists. Separately, the Republican president-elect has threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico if the country doesn’t stop the flow of migrants and fentanyl. The Republican Party’s platform includes use of the military at the border.

In response, Sheinbaum has rushed to show her administration isn’t soft on drugs and migrants. Her government has gone after fentanyl smugglers in Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel, seizing 1.3 tons of the drug in a record bust. She has sent her security minister to Sinaloa to oversee the efforts to take back control of a state where organized crime dominates the political establishment and two factions are in a turf war.

Mexico is in talks to set up a unit of elite security officers who would be vetted and trained by U.S. law-enforcement officials for operations against criminals in Mexico, according to Mexican officials.

Trump signaled that security would be the prime focus of the two countries’ relationship with his nomination of Ron Johnson as U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Johnson is a former Green Beret and U.S. intelligence officer with wide experience in Latin America.

Johnson was an adviser to El Salvador’s army during that country’s civil war in the 1980s, and served as U.S. ambassador to El Salvador during Trump’s first term. Now, many expect him to play an important role in formulating Mexico’s security strategy as it confronts organized-crime groups that control smuggling and migrant routes to the U.S. Sheinbaum’s security minister, Omar García Harfuch, worked closely with U.S. security agencies when he was head of Mexico City’s police.

“This ambassador will be a de facto part of Mexico’s security cabinet,” said Eduardo Guerrero, a Mexico City-based security analyst.

My uncle Harry was in the Brooklyn NYC Guard which was a Cav unit (horses) and the unit was called down Mexico way to relieve Blackjack Pershing and persue Pancho Villa.

He’d be happy to know there is a statue of Villa in downtown Tucson today.

I always love how Tucson progressives always bring Cesar Chavez into immigration discussions. Apparently, TUSD does not teach history.

Only their version(s) 😐

Mexico has a long history of not doing sh*t it should.

Mexico has a long history of corruption.

“…includes use of the military at the border.” <—THIS!

Should have already been doing it. The primary purpose of the US Military “SHOULD BE” protecting the US. How many of us have preached the idea of defending our border with our troops instead of defending other’s borders. Good training exercises for our troops and will help stop, or at least slow down, what has become an invasion. And since these invaders are NOT American Citizens and they are BREAKING OUR LAWS, we shouldn’t have concerns over the “using American troops on American soil thing. A few “warning shots” into the heads of the invaders would serve as a “warning” to others.

I can see it already:

CO: SANDERS, I said to fire a WARNING SHO!
Troop: I did so, Sir!
CO: THAT was a HEAD SHOT!
Troop: Yes Sir, and his buddies are now warned!

Odie

I kind of like that strategy.

Pop the coyotes.
Any cartel carrying weapons on the other side get popped tool.

Obviously the Mexican government is unwilling and/or unable to stop the cartels from controlling major swaths of their country. Democrats in office make no effort in stemming the criminal enterprises negatively impacting the safety and wellbeing of Americas, and most Republican administrations have implemented half-assed policies that would diminish the power of the cartels instead of destroying them. Donald Trump came into office and laid it out that previous efforts were not enough, it is time to take the fight to the cartels. The Mexican government had ample opportunity to resolve it, they can’t do it, so now it looks like once again that America has to be the world’s policemen. A few strategic strikes on senior cartel members may convince them that had a good run, but is now time to submit their retirement packages. They can cease their operations on their terms, or on our terms.

A Proud Infidel®™

IMHO the Mexican Government is owned and operated by the cartels, they’re about as competent and ethical as some guy who tries to sell outdated Red Hat Software from the trunk of a junked-out Jaguar!

Hack Stone

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Let’s not disparage an entire nation by comparing them to someone who is our intellectual and genetic superior. Not so much our financially stable superior, what with his 3rd (4th?) bankruptcy under his belt. Hack knows a few people who declared bankruptcy, mostly due to their bad life decisions, but it takes special kind of lucky sperm to declare personal bankruptcy three times, with two of them within ten years of each other. What special skills did he possess that Phil Monkress found worthy of him running the Reston Virginia branch of All Points Logistics, other than his ability to succumb to Phil’s peer pressure to attack military blogs?

A Proud Infidel®™

Oh, yeah, Psulmre whatshisface, “The Lucky Sperm Club” guy.

Hack Stone

That guy, formerly of Wilson Lane. And more recently, formerly of Lonesome Pine Lane. Psul was cutting back on expenses, like paying his rent. Renting 5 bedroom home for $6500 a month? Pretty easy to swing that if you don’t pay your rent.

We took Mexico City once.. should have kept it, we would have been able to avoid all this bullshit..

“elite security officers who would be vetted and trained by U.S. law-enforcement officials”

I think I’ve seen this movie before….

Odie

Good morning Vietnam Nam. Or Iraq. Or Afghanistan. Or…… You get the idea.

Hack Stone

Mexican Federal Narcotics Officers have been trained by US advisors to a of times before. The either get killed off by the cartels or join up with the cartels to prevent their being killed by the cartels.

Andy11M

Los Zetas comes to mind.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

I hope he does the same to Canada.
That will get Turdeau’s (the dickless dictator) attention

Odie

Quick dick mcdick on YouTube gets it. A farmer from Saskatchewan with not a lot, ok, nothing good to say about Canadian leadership.

Graybeard

I think Trump’s troll about being the 51st state is great.

SFC D

This sounds like a job for Mr. Clark and Ding Chavez. The Sinaloa cartel is a clear and present danger.

DocV

I wondered when this reference would appear. Bueno!

Mexico only gets 10% of GDP sent home, so it could stand to be more concerned about our interests versus drug cartels.
