Mel Brooks gets another Oscar
When I saw Mel Brooks’ name pop up in my news feed, I immediately assumed that we’d lost the comedy legend. At 97 years old, it’s not an improper conclusion to draw. Fortunately for us all, Mel is still alive and kicking, and winning awards! The king of non-PC comedy only ever got one Oscar […]
Unrelated shorts – Sullivan dies, St. Louis arrest
GEN Gordon Sullivan died at age 86 on January 2. Not sure who he was? The good general had a unique distinction – Army Secretary and Chief of staff – simultaneously. Retired Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, who served as the Army’s 32nd chief of staff from 1991 to 1995 and oversaw pivotal post-Cold War transformations, […]
The US Army is taking applications for the new recruiting warrant officer field
The Army rolled out a new recruiting warrant officer field, the Talent Acquisition Technician Warrant Officer. Soldiers have from January 3 through February 2, 2024, to submit their applications. Selection boards for this field will be conducted early this year. These boards will choose up to 225 soldiers. Once selectees complete their training, and report […]
Marines to upgrade their live simulated training
The Marines intend to upgrade their live simulated training. They want to shift from having to go to training centers to run these simulations, towards a networked system that allows Marines to train from anywhere with collocated and remotely located Marines. The Marines also plan to roll out their Marine Corps Tactical Instrumentation System (MCTIS). […]
Valor Friday
I briefly mentioned Peter Conover Hains last week as we explored men who spent more time in the service than is normal. Hains was the only confirmed American veteran of both the Civil War and World War I, though he didn’t see overseas service in the latter conflict. Canadian John Boucher is said to also […]
Wednesday Service shorts
Been an interesting day for snippets of info from various services. Let’s open up with the Navy: Yemen’s Houthis unleashed a new onslaught of anti-ship and land attack weaponry today around the southern end of the Red Sea. U.S. Central Command says the Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Laboon (DDG-58) and F/A-18 Super Hornets from […]
New robots to aid troops, Skynet smiles
Ok, nothing to do with Skynet, the supposedly mythical robot AI fighting humans in Ah-nuld’s “Terminator” series. (Yes, other people were in the movies and headlined yet others… but face it, he is the face of the franchise.) “We’re prototyping platoons,” Rainey (Gen. James Rainey, head of Army Futures Command – ed.) said. “This […]
Sad anniversary
This week marks one of the sadder anniversaries in Army history. No, not a major battle, but a reminder that anything to do with war has its risks. Even so-called “peacekeeping”. On December 12, 1985, a DC8 full of 101st soldiers made their second stop of a trip from Cairo to Cologne to Gander, Canada […]
