Phil Rosenthal in “And the Beat Goes on” thread, John Wayne – the Alamo Forum.
“I actually was in a Guard unit first while I was in college, trying not to get drafted into the regular army, but while waiting to get my orders to be sent to basic training, I experienced a “crisis of conscience” that caused me to switch to the Regular Army, then I later went back into the NG about 3 years later, spending another 6 years there in three different enlistments. Originally, in 1967, I had enlisted in the Marine Corps right out of high school, but between the time I signed my enlistment papers and when I was supposed to report for induction – July 5, 1967 – I got into a bad motorcycle accident and was too messed up at that time for them to take me. Oddly enough, the guy I was riding with, was on leave from the Army, went to ‘Nam, and was wounded five times over there – once by Idiot Schwarzkopf’s ‘friendly fire’. He survived and is a prosperous owner of a UPS Store in West Palm. Later that summer, I got college academic/sports scholarships to UCLA, Purdue and NJ State and went to school instead, enlisting in the Army in my senior year. I started in UCLA and When I got out of the RA, I finished the final semester in school in NJ.”
