Art Medina; phony Marine in the news
A few weeks ago, we wrote about Art Medina who was sent to us by the folks at Guardian of Valor. He claimed to be a Fallujah Marine and told folks that he was raising money for injured warriors. It seems that he was supposed to be organizing the NFL’s Toys for Tots program this year, too. The truth is that he spent most of time in the Marines as a deserter. Our buddy, Dan Noyes, at ABC7 busted him on camera;
The Redwood City Chapter of the NFL alumni Toys for Tots program is bouncing back with the help of some real marines after the man who organized the toy drive had to resign after getting caught lying about his military record.
Art Medina says he didn’t think he’d ever get caught for the lies he told to so many people even though the San Jose man has seen all the stories ABC7 Investigative Reporter Dan Noyes has done on people who falsely claim to be war heroes.
For three years, Medina was the NFL’s military liaison responsible for arranging color guards and fund-raisers. He has left behind angry football players and military veterans.
But the Supreme Court says that Stolen Valor is a victimless crime.

I think Medina got lucky. It looks like he was about to embezzle a whole lot more money if he got that foundation started. If he was really planning on giving that $6000 to the Marines Memorial Club he would have broke out the check book during the interview. Truth is he probably already spend a lot of it and now has to think of where to get the money from.

Art Medina CONNED his way into a lot of things:
1. NFL Liason, was that a paying job?
2. He took donations for food and lodging.
3. He conned his way into people letting him stay in their homes.
That and the alleged $6K he took while pretending to be a Combat Wounded Veteran, maybe this could be forwarded to a competent Prosecutor that gives a damn?
Slam dunk case for fraud, even if you don’t throw in stolen valor, which this is a textbook case of as well.
He collected over 6,000 dollars in funds which he has no accounting for other than mumbling something about T-shirts.
Not to mention all the freebies he was getting while working for those organizations.
He fled all right, probably not because of threats but to get away from those handcuffs he should get thrown on his ass.

Yeh..call me the Grinch who might spoil someone’s Christmas, but I’ve heard and read so many of these stories that I tend to look for details that do NOT fit the story. Here is a link I’d appreciate someone with better investigative skills than me to take a look at. The two important points that jump out at me are here: He’s 55 years old and claims he joined the Navy and served in Afghanistan. Some how that age makes me wonder…a LOT!
Secondly, now that someone has supposedly bought him a home and given it to him, he claims since he now has a permanent address he can apply for food stamps and V A benefits.
What am I missing here?

If I’m wrong, don’t hesitate to call me paranoid. In my own defense, I am aware of more than one who lives under a bridge but still manages to have a checking account to which his disability check is mailed each month.
Not saying he’s legit or phony….but…I’m 44, been to both Iraq and Afghanistan, joined the Corps when I was 19 and retired in 2013 after 21 years. If he joined the Navy in his late 20’s, joined at 26 got out at 42…we were in Afghanistan in 2002, 55 now is possible with service in Afghanistan.
Mailing address…gotta have one. No address no bank account, no bank account no direct deposit, no monthly VA money. I know with SC you have to have an address to get Stats assistance, Food Stamps, also. There are a lot of homeless Vets in this area that still get hard checks from the VA sent to a PO box then go to a grocery store or check cashing place to cash it….but you still have to have that address.

Josh…thanks for at least taking a look at it and giving an honest opinion. If nothing else, there is one piece of news that you are not aware of yet. Last week I received a letter from the V A regarding travel pay alone, since my monthly SC check arrives via direct deposit. Starting next month (at least in Alabama) no more hard checks will be issued for Medical Travel Reimbursement. You will be required to sign up for Direct Deposit if you already receive monthly compensation via Direct Deposit. In other words, if you currently receive monthly payments via Direct Deposit, then your travel pay reimbursement must also be sent via Direct Deposit. However, if you do not currently receive ANY payment via Direct Deposit, you can still opt for receipt of a prepaid debit card, both for monthly compensation and travel reimbursement. Nope, it makes absolutely no sense to me either, other than not wasting paper to write checks on. Beyond that, I can see every bit as much trouble with those debit cards getting into the wrong hands just as easily as checks.
From your thoughts on age, etc., I see no reason to go overboard with this. Then again, you know how we Devil dogs are, just have to find out on my own. Will get back on this story if anything really odd turns up. Meanwhile, thanks for the help.
