John W Stoneburgh; phony secret squirrel
Scotty sends us a link to his work on this John W Stoneburgh fellow. He was busted on the old POW Network website, but now that it’s down, he figures that he can get back to the business of being so secret that no one can find his real records. He spins tales about the time he was captured by Iraqis during the 1st Gulf War against Saddam Hussein, but, luckily, he was rescued by Navy SEALS.
The truth is somewhat less glamorous – he was a truck driver in the Army Reserves and his only active duty was 4 months for his initial training. The new Defense Department agency, the Defense POW/MIA Accountability Agency doesn’t list him as a POW, even if he was captured by Iraqis from his Fort Living Room bunker.
Oh, yeah, he also claims that he reenlisted after 9-11 and went to fight terrorists in the war against them, but, no. Didn’t any of his family notice that he wasn’t gone?

Old Trooper. This grunt without a CIB = a truck driver. “Grunt” is kind of meaningful, just to me and in my opinion anyway, although I know it is appropriate to use the term for the any soldier. The Army started fielding trucks with automatic transmissions in the early 80s. Always wondered if that was because we were recruiting too many shiftless folks.

Sparks, I was stationed at Misawa AFB (Army AAA) in 1955-56 and our duce and a halfs all had automatic transmissions. So did our 3/4 tonners too. I just figured all of the Army had gone to that type transmission. Our Jeeps were still stick though.
This is the sort of thing that makes it tough on those of us who really have “Been There, Done That”.
When I meet with VA doctors or bureaucrats, my mundane stories of ordinary military life can’t begin to compete with all of the fakery and fraud being pumped into the VA system.
Of course, if he’s claiming multiple leg fractures, a quick x-ray examination will verify or disprove that allegation.

Unfortunately, yes! That’s how broke this particular government-run health care system is, and it’s just a harbinger of things to come under Obuttheadcare!
Unfortunately,the VA, does not verify 214’s. They take them at face value. I don’t know how much it would cost, but couldn’t the VA hire people to verify them? I mean it can’t take too much to be put on a high priority at NRC. Or is this too much common sense?
I know some places, like the VA hospital around my neck of the woods, are requiring that the 214’s produced have the seal and signature of the Office of Adjutant General of the state on them before they accept them. Although that’s normally the source of your NGB22 not 214, at least here in Kentucky they keep both on record there. For the licenses plates, the veteran drivers license etc, all require a copy signed and sealed.

They have been saying for years, if not decades, that the systems are incompatible. And that justifies letting fraud slide, in their minds?
A solution is not as difficult as they want everyone to believe. One would be to send a VA clerk type to NRC to act as liaison – this clerk would confirm eligibility for all who apply for VA benefits using NPRC data. Problem solved – no systems need ever become compatible, no NRC records need ever leave their control, the number of persons who can either by design or incompetence compromise NPRC data remains limited, and if you sent a couple instead of one, the backlog might suddenly go away as the frauds pull their applications.
There are many equally simple solutions out there, but most are counter to the make-work, job security thing which drives most bureaucrats.
I’ll do it. I would love to do just that. I’ve been trying to get the Eligibility people to “red flag” suspicious DD214s but the problem is that most people say “it’s not my job”. There’s no training involved so even if they run across one, they wouldn’t know it. There’s supposed to be fact checkers at the national level but we all see how “good” they are.

You can be verified very quickly with a SSN/Service Number in the DEERS network.The VA has the capability but probably put you on a waiting list to be verified before you get put on a waiting list for an appointment. Just after they put you on the secret waiting list.
With automation these days it shouldn’t be too difficult to put the FOIA releasable information into a database. CAC card restrict it and require the VA folks to register for an account and they wouldn’t have to be put on any type of priority list.
3E9: for those serving after about 2000, even a database would not be necessary. Since around 2000, each service has maintained the physical electronic records for those being separated, with NARA having only archival coordination responsibility. They can be accessed on-line.
All that should be needed in such cases is a CAC/other recognized smartcard type ID and appropriate access to the existing electronic records databases. Procedurally, requiring an applicant to sign an SF180 giving full access to their records for the purposes of VA eligibility determination would be the legal “cover” required.
Prior to that point, records were physically archived at NPRC in St Louis. For persons separated before around 2000, a records search at NPRC would be required for actual verification. But as has been pointed out, putting a small number of VA liaison personnel at NPRC for exactly that purpose – along with the requirement for an SF180 on application for benefits – would be a fairly simple way to fix that problem as well.
John. Your not joking on that since the day I got my free chopper ride out. Of the sand box I spent about six months in Bethesda, Md at a Hospital and then off to BFE…. Ft H in Arizona from the minute I got there Intill I left the Army the War Story’s were off the top… Little did anybody know. I was a Ops NCO for a part of the western and southern AO That I was in. da sandbox. Some of the story telling was of NYTs best seller quality. Or it’s seems half of them were in the running for a Oscar for best acting. Our cadre could do nothing about it. Because if you called them out they would cry to there congressmen…
When processing out of the Army, we were told to go IMMEDIATELY to our County Clerk and have our DD-214 formally registered, copied, notarized, and made a part of the public record.
That’s what I did with mine.
My DD-214s can be seen at the County Clerk’s offices in Portland, Oregon, and in Salt Lake City, Utah.
