Ryan Payne the fake Ranger at Bundy Ranch
The Canada Free Press reports that Ryan Payne, the fellow we talked about yesterday who was head of security at the Bundy Ranch and claimed to be a Ranger was walking right up to the line, like so many embellishers; he was assigned to F Co, 51st Infantry, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion. I’m guessing that our Canadian friends like what happened at the Bundy Ranch and so they make excuses for Payne;
Note that he served “as a long range surveillance senior scout observer and assistance team leader.“Not only were their Rangers doing “long range surveillance”, there were Airborne qualified personnel doing “long range surveillance” They did the same duties as a Ranger, though they were only rangers. They did not earn the tab “Ranger”, and Payne has never claimed that he had earned the tab.
[…]
However, the nit pickers, in their efforts to demean Ryan Payne, have chosen to attack his successful (read the citations, again) “meritorious service” at Bunkerville, holding the chaotic mass of militia and molding them into a cohesive force, by attacking his likewise successful service to his country as the tool to accomplish their nefarious objective.
No, this is not a case of “Stolen Valor”, it is simply a case of “Stealing Valor”.
Yeah, there’s a couple of Army Commendation Medal citations at the link, but they’re not really relevant here, unless you’re looking for a reason to like Payne. The thing is, being one of the “nitpickers”, I was actually assigned to a Ranger Battalion and I’ve never called myself a “Ranger”. No I didn’t earn a tab, but because my assignment to the Ranger Battalion ended up being just one of my numerous assignments in my career, I didn’t think that calling myself a Ranger was appropriate.
You can check all of the interviews I’ve ever done and all I’ve ever called myself was “an infantry platoon sergeant” because I’m especially proud of that. So, your experience with what Payne was trying to do might differ from mine, but when someone tells people that he’s a Ranger, he didn’t mean to say that he was “a sergeant in the F Co, 51st Infantry, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion”, he meant for you to understand it as something completely different than the way the Canada Free Press wants you to understand it.
Added 4-22-2016; We finally got a FOIA for Payne after four attempts. Three came back “no service” but I checked around the community and folks remembered him, so we kept going back. No Ranger training, no service in a traditional Ranger unit;
Category: Phony soldiers
Elsewhere, CFP stands for “Canadian Free Press”. However, here CFP apparently stands for “Canadian Foolish Putzes”.
Idiots.
So he’s using the Wittgenfeld Gambit. “I was assigned to a Ranger unit therefore I am a Ranger.” Shitbird.
As for Canada, two words: Justin Bieber.
So we can call Ryan Payne “The Justin Beiber of Ranger Posers”?
I like it!
I’m ok with it
How would that compare with Celine Dion?
That would be like me trying to call myself a Ranger because I was part of a RSE when I was AD in the early nineties, or ditto SF because we went to classes taught by them. Do these news mutts TRY to be as shallow and stupid as they can, or does it come to them naturally, and are the “Perfessers” at today’s schools of Urinalism anything other than ponytailed Birkenstock-wearing freeze-dried hippies?
Do I get to be or call myself a SF because I’m married to one? That would be really neeto swell. 🙂
If you’re married to one, I think you get to say you’re in command of a SF unit 😉
OOooooooooooo! Yay me!
I always wanted to be in command of something.
Dieties know I can’t even command my hair to stop looking like the broom brushes in Harry Potter…
Toastie, even ineffective commanders are still technically in command.
It might help if you are careful to use proper comms protocols — for example, the default call sign for a Spousal Commander is “Homefront-6”.
What kind of ranger was he? Gas? Or electric?

Park Ranger at Jellystone National Park.
Most likely a Picnic Basket Inspector if anything!
Wait?! What?! I wonder if these guys realize that F Co was disbanded and reflagged as C Co 1-38 years ago.
Actually it was active when I left C. Company, 519th Military Intelligence Bn. In December 1995. F Company was our LRS unit. As an Airborne qualified E-5 when Charlie company shut down the Command Sergeant Major of the 313 Military Intelligence Battalion, 82 Airborne couldn’t’t wait to snap me up.
Ever notice how many of these guys turn out to be outright fakes or major league embellishers?
Just an observation.
I saw this the other day and thought that he looked familiar and holy shit I know that guy. I was in LRS with him. F co is a LRS unit, not a ranger unit but it has a lot of rangerisms, if that’s a word. Our PTs had a tab and a scroll on them. Didn’t feel right to wear them when I didn’t have a tab at the time. A lot of guys came out of Bat so they would act like they were still there so you would get the same treatment like a private in bat, i.e. knowing the creed and other stuff. Just about every NCO and most SPCs were tabbed. But make no mistake we were an airborne unit and we wore maroon berets. It sounds like he was boosting his resume. I saw his video and he was quoting the ranger creed and I thought he was full of shit. He got there as a private and didn’t try out. Nothing special about him being there. I am tabbed and would never do that. I guess he missed the part about embarrassing his country.
F Co 51st used to be the VII Corps’ LRSC when I was in Germany in the early 90’s. After VII Corps was deactivated, where did they move to?
F co, 51st went on to Fort Bragg with the 18th ABC. It happened in the 90’s. I deployed with them. They later got reflagged to some Cav BS. F co 51st is not a Anti-Tank Company at fort hood with 1st Cav.
Odd, I don’t remember them being 18 ABC’s LRSC. I don’t your word, it’s my CRS acting up again.
When I was there we wore in the 525th MI patch. They are still in the 525th but they are in a Cav battalion instead of a MI battalion.
And you guys complain about Navy rates and ranks. Sheesh. Could someone point me to an Army translator app?
RM3(SS), what do you need translated? I was Army for 20 years and maybe can help.
I served with him actually in F. Co. back between 2004 to 2006. I was a tabbed Spec-4 at the time.
Small world! How funny!
Yep. Not a Ranger unit. I was down the street from them in the late 80’s, early 90’s when I was in 34th Sig.
There are two kinds of people…those that are, and those that aren’t.
You don’t even have to guess what this guy is…or isn’t.
Canadian Free Press – Oxymoroon …
Nitpickers – Guilty
“Meritorious Service” – Negative … That is awarded for or by the President.
Stolen vs. Stealing Valor – Same Thing
Perhaps the news outlet should be renamed: Canadian Dictionary Free Press!
It’s Canadia, not Canada–unless one is from Quebec. Then it’s something else entirely.
Um, you trolls who are emailing me, make sure you read the post first, otherwise, you’ll look illiterate. But who am I kidding – you didn’t read the post, so why would I expect you to read this comment?
The post isn’t coming down so that you can pretend to be a Ranger with the bar flies. You were LRS, be proud of that and stop demeaning what you did by making shit up.
Do they read along the lines of, “I was in a Victor slot, so that makes me a Ranger?”
Damn, Jonn, is he “Bernathing” on you already? We COULD go for a new chew toy, ya’ know? *shit-eating grin*
Clown.
Oh, I have no doubt that he’s a real Ranger. Of rumps, that is to say.
RUMPS, PFFFFT HA HA
*spitting out my fruitloops*
I’m sure that fine Candian from Canadia has concluded that those with Payne at Bundy’s were FBI/CIA/IRS/XYZ plants rather than former military who grew suspicious of Payne’s claims. Arguing with drunks and nuts is never a good thing. Too bad our Canadian friend chose the wrong side on this. Doing did much harm and no good for their brand of conservatism.
For what it’s worth, F Co/51st Infantry, while in Vietnam, was eventually reflagged as G Co, 75th Infantry (Ranger), which shares lineage with the current Ranger Regiment. F/51 doesn’t, however, which is kind of odd considering. The whole issue is very… pedantic.
Never a Ranger, never SF, never a Seal, never Delta, never anybody special . . . Got ARVN jump wings and was a Pathfinder, they used us as LRRP since Aviation had their own Pathfinders. Did get CIB.
‘Close enough’ ain’t close enough.
We ran with ARVN a lot, does that make us Marvins?
Who gives a darn about The fake USA(Canada) or this Rumpinstein Wanna-B Ranger.
All are Poser’s
I served with F Co LRS from 2001-04 and prior to joining the unit I was told by 1SG Murphy that it was a Ranger designated unit. You originally had to attend Ranger school if I ever expected to promote to sergeant. Later during the unit’s first deployment began they promoted their first non-tabbed E-4 to E-5 in order to get him approved for a Bronze Star w/ V device. That coupled by PCS and ETS of NCOs caused them to promote men like Ryan, whom I served with while at F Co. I have spoken with many “Bat Boys.” There are different takes on this. Some see you as only a Ranger if you earned your tab, others you have to earn a tab and be in a Ranger unit and even others recognize those that serve in a Ranger designated unit. I have never claimed to be a Ranger after getting sent home with a grade two ankle sprain. I don’t feel that Ryan is anymore guilty than the non-CIB Ranger Instructors that try to pass themselves off as combat experts. It’s not surprising that Mr. Harrington would be outraged since most tabbed Rangers care more about an antiquated school’s piece of cloth than real combat experience. I have served with Ryan overseas on one of his two tours and I would proudly serve over there with him again. I would like to remind everyone that many Vietnam Rangers from LRRP units never attended Ranger School at Ft. Benning, but instead did more of an OJT/in country training.
Considering their history page and the specific entry regarding the post-Vietnam period, Brad, it would seem as if the US Army Ranger Association disagrees with you about those serving in F Co LRS.

I was simply explaining what others in the Ranger community have spoken to me about. My 1SG was in Ranger Bn and he was not on top of the “official” information. You want to see something hilarious you should look at some of the more obscure members of RTB’s Ranger “Hall of Fame.”
In the 12+ yrs that I’ve known Ryan I have never heard my friend claim he was a Ranger. I do not take false claims lightly and I assure this is another one of the author’ switch hunts.
