Phony steals $60k from Legion post

| December 18, 2011

I’m sure he was only using his freedom of speech to relieve his fellow Legionnaires of the burden of more than $60 thousand.

In 2008, [Joe T. ] Joseph was forced out of the post after a fellow member questioned his membership eligibility.

The Legion’s state and national headquarters determined Joseph was ineligible because his discharge paperwork showed no evidence of active federal service during wartime.

An audit by accounting firm Kisiel & Rudnik determined that $62,127.89 in funds weren’t deposited into the account between 2006 and 2008, including more than $53,000 in 2007 alone, according to the criminal complaint.

During that time, Joseph was a member of the post and the financial officer who had responsibility to take control of various funds and deposit them in the post’s bank accounts, the complaint states.

Thanks to TPM for the link.

eh… it was a victimless crime. Isn’t that what this stuff is called? No one got hurt…

We all know that is what the excuses will be.

oh just great another scuzz put’s a Veterans Club into the red. This happens in Canada also. A fake rips off the club get’s caught, goes to court and then when found guilty does not repay the Veteran’s Association then the club goes into recievership, all because of a goofoff playing upon the older Exec who put trust into the jerk. I sure hope he get’s his upcommings from the younger Veterans. Then again you can not get water from a dry well.

There is just something terribly upsetting about frauds who take advantage of any charity. But when it is a veterans’ charity? ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!

A little “wall to wall” counceling seems to be in order here. Don’t care how old the perp is, old enough to do the crime, old enough to do the time. And he can use the embezzled money to pay his hospital bills.

Beretverde

He’ll blame it on PTSD and claim he got it from listening to other vet’s stories while at the Legion. I pray he doesn’t get double secret probation.

I still don’t understand how these things happen. I have only been a member of two veterans organizations. But both required e,tensive documentation. Both asked for my dd-214. One even went over all my disability paperwork. And this was just for membership. Not a position as the financial officer. Does the American Legion just take your word for it?

Frankly Opinionated

A very long time ago, it was suggested that I join an American Legion post in Florida to investigate why their treasury was continually dry. While I am a veteran, (NOT of combat), at that time, the eligibility for Nam era guys was started with the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in Aug 64. I was discharged in Apr 64, and never was I asked about my DD-214, even after campaigning for and winning Sgt of Arms, and very loudly campaigning for the post to start a “Sons of Legion” squadron.
After the investigation located the culprits, the WW-I n WW-II guys castigated me for coming in when not qualified. Not a word about the thieves and their lack of vetting newbies.

I have flirted with the idea of joining now and then but after the featured speakers were Obama and Pelosi at this year’s AL convention, it will be quite a while before I again consider it.

Beretverde

@8 Continue to flirt about-your choice.

A little insight-the AL lets politicians state their claims and make their promises (for votes). The AL refuses to back ANY candidate. Then the AL holds the politician to the fire on their claims, and will blast them for not following through.

I’ll never forget the Smithsonian’s Ending of WWII Anniversary display of the Enola Gay. It proclaimed an apology for dropping the bomb. The AL had the Smithsonian remove the apology and the guy who made it- fired!

Just an Old Dog

Common trend with almost everyone of these folks, its not just laying about medals and service and stealing intangibles. These same asshats embezzle veteran organization funds, softball leagues, businesses and charities out of tens of thousands of dollars, as well as the VA. A thief is a thief.
