R. McCorley

Recently found – his description of his “novel” from a 1986 letter to a friend

“The Hill – A Novel About The Vietnam War, by Phil Rosenthal, is scheduled for publication in September 1987 by Simon and Schuster.
It is a semi-autobiographical story of the author’s experiences in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army’s elite Special Forces ‘Green Berets’, culminating in the largest, and most costly, battle ever fought by the Special Forces. It is not a novel celebrating the glories and romanticism of battle but instead the crude and terrifying realities of combat. If one wants to know how ‘it really was’ to experience actual combat at its most intense in the Vietnam War, this book is a must. Mr. Rosenthal is well qualified to write such a book as a ‘Green Beret’ served two tours in Vietnam as an A-Detachment Team Leader, earning 23 decorations for valor and heroism under fire, among them the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts and the Republic of Vietnam’s Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Not only an experienced paratrooper, with 154 jumps and a specialty in High-altitude, low opening ‘HALO’ techniques to his credit, the author also earned the Airborne Ranger, Tank Commander, Air Assault, and Helicopter Pilot qualifications.”
