The gun sales surge accompanying the conronavirus pandemic is overwhelming state and federal background checks

| March 23, 2020

Governor Ned Lamont’s (D-Conn) ‘stay at home’ order closes non-essential businesses, but lists gun stores as “essential,” allowing them to continue to operate. That this sent shock-waves through both Pro 2A and Gun Control camps is a given, with Pro 2A organizations applauding the Governor’s Executive Order, and Gun Control groups panning it. Interesting times indeed.

Coronavirus Gun Sale Surge Overwhelms State, Federal Background Check Systems

By: AWR HAWKINS

On March 19, 2020, Breitbart News reported National Shooting Sports Foundation numbers showing gun sales in the U.S. had jumped 300 percent above where they were at the same point in time last year. Thereafter, various Federal Firearm License holders (FFLs) contacted Breitbart News to talk of calling into the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Checks (NICS) to do a background check for a pending sale, only to be placed on hold for hours and/or, in some cases, to have the line disconnected.

An FFL from a western state told Breitbart News he has a stack of background checks forms–ATF form 4473–already filled out by customers who came into the store to purchase firearms during the sales surge. The FFL arrives at store early in the morning and places a call to the FBI NICS number simply to be placed in the queue, and once he is talking to someone he runs as many of the background checks as he can before being disconnected.

An FFL in a midwestern state told Breitbart News he lost “$10,000 to “$12,000” in sales on Friday, March 20, 2020, due to delays in NICS response to phone calls for background checks.

An FFL in a southern state told a similar story after having so many struggles with NICS that he thought the background check system had simply been shut down.

Hmmm, down to about 1K 5.56mm, may have to stop by my neighborhood firearms emporium and see what’s in stock. Read the rest here: Breitbart

And all the loopy lefties are finding out it ain’t as simple to buy a gun as that lying SOS Bloomberg. Shannon Watts, and the rest of the mouth-breathers have been trying to tell them all along.

A Proud Infidel®™

I’ve heard of liberal snowflakes crying that the “Gun Show Loophole” doesn’t exist after all!

rgr769

Yup, in some of their lefty blue states with state mandated waiting periods, they are finding that even though they bought and paid for the gun and passed the instant background check, they will be waiting ten or more days before they can pick up the weapon from the FFL dealer that sold it to them at the gun show. They may have also discovered that buying a gun on the internet via a site like GunBroker works about the same way, but includes the FFL dealer’s fee, background check fees, plus shipping charges.

26Limabeans

And after all that they have to find
ammo to go with it and jump through all
the local ammo laws like the poor guy in
New Jersey.

A Proud Infidel®™

I love hearing about how the lefties end up screwing themselves with the Laws they get passed!

Anonymous

Commissar

Depends on where you live. I bought them in parking lots from private sellers more than once while in Washington state. No background check. Nothing more than cash necessary.

The issue is that it CAN be too east to buy a gun due to federal loopholes and loose state laws.

ArmyATC

Define “too easy” to exercise a right. What are those “federal loopholes” and “loose state laws” that allow making a firearm purchase “too easy?”

NHSparky

Don’t expect an answer. At least not a rational one.

ArmyATC

I’m sure the irony of complaining about “too easy” gun sales while not using the government background check system to purchase his guns totally escapes him.

SFC D

It’s supposed to be easy to exercise a constitutional right. That’s why it’s a right and not a privilege.

The Other Whitey

“Those who would give up essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

May your chains rest lightly, Lars, and history forget ye were ever our countryman.

PavePusher

May I please see your First, Fourth, Thirteenth and Twenty-Sixth Amendment Permits, proof of background checks, training, testing, and receipts for fees paid to the government?

26Limabeans

Might want to dust off amendment the third.
It was put there for a reason.
That reason is becoming clear in a few states.
Like RI for one.

5th/77th FA

The same people that didn’t know to keep a goodly supply of TP just realized they needed to have something to defend that TP supply with.

I didn’t overbuy on TP cause I am not full of crap.

I didn’t panic buy on ammo because…well you…know…the tragic boat accident crossing the quicksand bog getting to the flooded lake during the tornadocane took all the firearms I had.

A Proud Infidel®™

And me walking through that swamp when I hit some quicksand…

penguinman000

Hmm….I think you may have hit on the source of TP shortage. With the zombie death virus entering the new cycle we’ve had a proportionate increase in the amount of politicians going on news programs, releasing statements, etc…

More politicians spewing forth excrement=more TP needed.

5th/77th FA, you’re a genius.

Stacy0311

I’ve got a nice Bushmaster Carbon 15 that I’ll let go for the low price of $3500.
Also “clips” $100 each, ammo $1 per pew.
Snowflakes PM me for additional details….

USMC Steve

Stacy, I would not even do that. They don’t want the ebil firearms around, fuck ’em, they don’t get any. Notice that these problems are mostly in the socialist states of America, not in free America, though sales are up there too. Mostly ammo shortages, but I reload mine so I am not worried.

ArmyATC

I own a nice 1980s Bushmaster XM15E1 made at the old Windham factory before Remington got hold of the company. One of the best Ars I own. Now Bushmaster is gone along with DPMS. Remington fucked them both up and then closed them.

A Proud Infidel®™

I HAVE a nice stash of toilet paper I’m willing to trade for any good quality firearm. Now that grocery stores are considered essential and kept open, I wonder how foolish those who have hoarded feel? I used to be concerned about the booze supply, but now that liquor stores are being kept open I’m no longer concerned!

penguinman000

I never really grasped the shift in mentality in the US until I saw stores out of TP but stocked with beer.

Something fundamentally wrong with that.

Thunderstixx

I noticed the same thing.
Here in Austin, the genius mayor DrugAddler decided to issue a 2-3 week shelter in place order taking effect tomorrow at Midnight…..
Listening to the Trump at the daily press briefing telling the rest of America that given the low mortality rate and the effective treatment of the Chinese Wuhan Virus with simple and plentiful drug combinations that he is looking at ending this within the next week or so.
Something I figured out long ago. The entire thing was yet another attempt to throw another crisis at America just like the media clowns do every election year.
I was out on the road today, nobody is following any of these so called stay at home orders. The roads were busy as hell and we actually had a real traffic jam.
I’m just waiting for the party at the end of it.
It’s going to be the biggest party in the history of America.
Unlike the 9-11 mess this will have minor repercussions, but nothing that will cost us trillions of dollars and take the lives of so many of our young men and women that serve us as we read these posts.
There won’t be a bottle of liquor available in Austin after this party gets going !!!!!
since I’m sober for 31 years now, I’m going to capitalize on the party and make a damn fortune driving my new Jimmy Acadia for Uber high end customers !!!

11B-Mailclerk

Congrats on the sobriety. One weird day at a time.

My tin foil hat prediction is that this whole wretched mess is intended to prevent 270 legitimate Electors from being chosen for President, thus guaranteeing that the election moves to the current House of Representatives.

(Grin)

The damn-panic also has the result of ending those humongous gatherings of Trump supporters, especially those crossing over from the Donks.

(Toothy grin)

In some of the recent Primaries, Trump voters outnumbered Donk voters. That is shocking when one considers the Trump votes were for an effectively unopposed candidate.

I suspect the Donks holding everyone hostage for some congressional pork may not exactly win themselves new fans. It may actually annoy their remaining sane supporters, in an epic “own goal”.

The sooner we end this damn-panic and resume normal operations, the better off we all are. This was a stupid over-reaction to a bug not significantly worse than any moderate flu year. It hasn’t yet killed as many people here as a bad year in Chicago. It won’t equal the 2008-2009 flu year. Even if it does become a ” bad flu year”, we will drive on.

So we can all knock off the bullshit, and get back to normal.

11B-Mailclerk

Update. At 571 US deaths, we have now reached “Chicago annual deaths” level.

In Lawton, OK, Walmart sells out of beer, bread and Cheetos if it “might” snow… annoying if you’re from Cleveland getting groceries on the way home from work there in the winter.

Sparks

There used to be a joke where I cam from in the south. Went like this,

“What is in a Southerner’s Survival Kit?”

“A gun and the address of a Morman.”

No ill intent meant to any Mormans on the blog. Just telling an old joke.

cc senor

What ever happened to ol’ whatshisname? The LDS guy that moved to an old soldier’s home in Mississippi. I can remember a lot about him except his name. I’m sure some of you old timers remember him. He was with 101st’s signal battalion in Viet of the Nam.

SFC D

I’m not sure if he’s still welcome around these parts.

rgr769

He was a “combat” experienced radio wrencher with a Bulwinkle badge he never earned. His REMF stories about once going on a “patrol” around the perimeter wire at the 101st Division base camp were truly hair raising. I loved his pic he put up in the TAH gallery that depicted him taking a screw driver to an FM field radio at his work bench in the Viet of the Nam.

26Limabeans

Well to be fair, the seal of the Signal
Corps is a crossed screwdriver and condom.

NHSparky
A Proud Infidel®™

He just kind of wore out his welcome here with some pictures and statements.

Poetrooper

His username was Mal-something or the other, wasn’t it? For some reason he left the Veterans Home in Gulfport (may have worn out his welcome) and went to Salt Lake City. Last few times he posted here he was in some kind of trouble with authorities there as I recall.

A Proud Infidel®™

Yeah, I remember him talking about his saying something to someone working in the Soldiers Home got him booted from there. At first I was angry that he was getting kicked out, but some of his later statements made me rethink that.

SFC D

He had some serious bigotry issues.

Just came to me: John Robert Mallernee.

(WHEW!) I thought you were going to name me. I was a radio wrencher (but didn’t start until AFTER Viet of the Nam), am a Mormon, and live in/near SLC.

David

Isn’t he the fella that posted all those videos of him singing? Think last seen he was living out of his car somewhere.

11B-Mailclerk

I don’t personally know any Southerners who’s prep plans involve robbery.

Well, outside of politicians, that is.

I am sure you meant that quip humorously, but I think it fell a bit flat.

The Other Whitey

I’m Catholic myself, but I have yet to meet an unarmed Mormon.

Been a Southerner all my life and some of my best friends are members of the LDS Church…Seriously. And I’m what you could call a back sliding Southern Baptist. That’s the kind that WILL speak to another Baptist in the Class VI Supplies section of the store…and I can dance.

The Other Whitey

Saint John Moses of Ogden, thanks be to God!

SFC D

Slightly off thread, but it kinda fits. My great-great-grandpa was one of the first landowners in Ogden, bought 4 lots a week after Brigham Young laid out the city plan. He built the first furniture shop in the city, not far from where St. John’s gunsmith shop would be. I got to wondering if there was a familial connection there. So thanks to google and the LDS genealogy gang, I learned that he had left Ogden when St. John was 5. Disappointing. HOWEVER,GGG-pa was a friend of St. Johns father, Jonathon, and was baptized into the LDS church by James Browning, St. John’s older brother.

So I got that going for me. Which is nice.

A Proud Infidel®™

Lars and his ilk will just blame President Trump.

5th/77th FA

The empirical data will show that the replacement masks were ordered and used by the illegal immigrants, no, the undocumented workers, slaving for the imperialist yankee dogs at Trump Towers.

Commissar

No need. Trump has fucked up relrntlessly since he took office. No need to pile on fuckups from previous administrations.

rgr769

Only in the parallel universe in your brain-washed mind and those of your deranged Antifa pals. To 99 percent of us commenting here on TAH, you are the fuckup.

You left out “These are not the droids you’re looking for”. Leave the Jedi mind tricks to the experts.

A Proud Infidel®™

Let’s not forget that it was and still is minions from your side saying that those who disagree with your dogma need to be “Reeducated” like they still do in North Korea.

Re-education is for those not killed by the CHICOM virus.

That’s about the size of it– we’ll never need that, but expanded Welfare and Obamaphones will get us re-elected!

Discussed? This is just another attempt for the vast right wing conspiracy to taint the scandal-free Obama administration.

Are those N95 masks the ones you see in home depot with the filter cartridges on each side of the mask that painters use for paint spraying?? I saw one of my Lib neighbors in Publix 2 days ago wearing one and I was going to ask him if he had a good seal but kept my mouth shut. If anyone out there remembers the comic book Henry, the one whose head was shaped like a light bulb, the side of my face is like that and I found that out in boot camp when we had to go into the tear gas room and later on, I had a little difficulty wearing the Scott and MSA on demand masks before we went over to positive pressure although some of the older packs had a selector switch on them to go back and forth. Even my swim goggles have to be really adjusted to fit the narrow sides of my kisser.

11B-Mailclerk

I thought they were the pre-shaped stiffened-fabric types, similar to those sold in hardware stores as single-use dust masks.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I should have looked that up first before I commented

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

just looked up those N95 masks and they are the stiffened fabric type.

A Proud infidel®™

When it comes to Respirators, you have the Negative Pressure variety which are gas masks (An example of Positive Pressure is a Fireman’s SCBA) which come in half and full face. Those have a variety of filter cartridges for different atmospheric contaminants and are good as long as there is sufficient oxygen and dependent on the contamination. For instance it there is chlorine or lead contaminants, you have to have a positive pressure respirator, but for the China Virus a simple HEPA filter will do fine.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

My handgun safe is so small that I wouldn’t be able to put in a 12 pack of Publix brand greenwise TP. And in these rough times, I wouldn’t be shitting you. Sorry, but I just had to add that in.

A Proud Infidel®™

NO SHIT?

11B-Mailclerk

This too shall pass.

Poetrooper

Flushed down the old memory hole…

Sapper3307

The Sapper household still has Some Polish 5.56 I bought around 1987. Rotate your stocks and invest in them precious metals. I haven’t used any of my Clinton investment or Obama stash yet.

Poetrooper

Seeing as how most Americans who think like TAH followers are sufficiently armed and have no need to run out and buy more guns, this latest rush to arms can only be the result of hypocrite liberals, demonstrating that they always have known that the real purpose of gun ownership is for self-defense and not for hunting.

It also is a clear demonstration of their inherent dishonesty and the fallacious, easily abandoned nature of their policies. It must be very dispiriting to go through life being so fundamentally dishonest. No wonder so many have mental health issues, are consumed by anger and fear, are sexually confused and morally adrift.

When they can so readily cast aside one of their cardinal principles, it’s a fairly good indicator that should this purported cold civil war ever go hot, our side won’t have much to worry about, as most of them don’t possess sufficient strength in their professed beliefs to actually fight for them.

“Snowflake” perfectly describes such weak-willed, panicking phonies.

Thunderstixx

There is a line that never ends at the Academy Sports next door as the clowns line up to buy a gun, ANY gun and don’t bother to learn the first thing about guns, gun safety or the non-existent ammo for the gun they just bought….
I went in to see what was happening as I need to replace all of mine as they were stolen when I was working late one night.
I miss my guns, they were so pretty, I loved looking at them.

Fyrfighter

Went to Big R yesterday to get some feed for the critters. They had a list of ammo they were out of on a chalk board. It was far longer than a list of the ammo they still had would have been…

Picture this, you’re looking out at a beautiful stream going over a large waterfall and you see Nanny Lugosi and Chuck Schoomah in a canoe about to go over the waterfall to a certain death. You have the opportunity to either rescue them OR take an all time prizewinning photo, so what shutter speed do you use?

I’d be too busy cheering to take the picture. Watching them go over IS the prize!

You can’t do either if you’re being truest mindful.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Someone mentioned last week that the surge in sales were due to people getting their tax returns and yesterday when I commented, I forgot to mention that the tax deductions or whatever it’s called were changed last year. I received much more back from the 2018 and 2019 returns so that could be one of the reasons for the big turnout on the purchase of guns & ammo.

Roh-Dog

I’m no Lamont lackey, in fact if I came across Mr. Lamont on fire and I had a full bladder, I’d probably figure out what to have for dinner before the flames subsided.
But in this he’s correct. States of Emergency are totalitarian in nature, prohibiting otherwise free enterprise, so by him following the spirit of the Constitution it’s a win(?).
I have some items inbound so knowing that they’ll be received and hopefully distributed to me is a load off my stack of worry.
