US officials and Taliban representatives have signed a final peace deal after months of negotiations in Qatar’s capital to end the United States’s longest war.

Today’s agreement, signed in Doha in the presence of leaders from the US, Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, will pave the way for the US to gradually withdraw its troops.

This is not a brokered deal between the Taliban and Afghanistan’s government, the Achilles’ heel that could halt the withdrawal. The government holds some 5000 of the Taliban prisoner, and the Taliban wants them released.

From the article:

The U.S. and the Taliban signed a historic peace deal on Saturday, aiming to end the 18-year long war in Afghanistan.

The agreement stipulates a U.S. force drawdown to 8,600 from 13,000 within four months, with the remainder to withdraw completely in 14 months, the Associated Press reported. A complete withdrawal is dependent on the Taliban’s ability to fulfill their side of the commitment to prevent terrorism.

The agreement was signed by U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in Qatar with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in attendance.

Pompeo said the U.S. is “seizing the best opportunity for peace in a generation.”

He called the agreement a “true test of this effort.”

“We will closely watch the Taliban’s compliance with their commitments and calibrate the pace of our withdrawal to their actions. This is how we will ensure that Afghanistan never again serves as a base for international terrorists,” Pompeo said.

Hope the Taliban are more savvy than the Palestinians, who never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Read the entire article here: American Military News

The Other Whitey

I take it any further attacks on US troops will void the deal?

Mason

One would think. Like I said last week, any such attacks will be attributed to “rogue elements” and brushed off so we can GTFO of there with some semblance of pride.

I’m glad I don’t own any stocks from the companies that produce arms and munitions. I wonder how Trumps Mil advisors feel about the peace deal. Maybe they should get a hold of their brokers and sell.

Trump just signed a deal to sell India
rotary wing aircraft. I would get in on that
while stocks are low if I had the dough.

Sounds like a plan! Let’s let Iran and China play in Afghanistan for the next 20 years.

Then in 2041 the US will return to Kabul for the official RIP\TOA (Relief In Place\Transfer Of Authority). Maybe next time around we should build housing complexes, schools, hospitals, commissaries, etc. on Bagram and Kandahar airfields for dependent families. Accompanied tours will be two years (standard) and three years (long).

Attention investors: go long in US defense contractor stock positions especially Halliburton and KBR.

S’about time. Like I’ve said in the past, A-stan has been known as “The Graveyard of Empires”, just ask the British, French and the Russians.

I bet Crazy Joe claims he brokered this deal in the next Dem’s debate.

Noticed that the A’stan gubmint wasn’t in on this deal? And why even make a deal. It won’t be honored. Make it simple, just GTFO. No notice, no time frame, no deal. Keep enough overhead cover to protect the withdrawal, then blow everything that would cost more to move than it is worth as the last chopper lifts off.

History has taught us that those people have been killing one another since the beginning of time. Enough of y’all here have seen that up close and personal. As CCR said let the ChiComs and the Iranians play for awhile. The defense contractors will be OK, they’ll make a nice profit by replacing all of the depleted and wore out stuff we got. Or hey, here’s a novel idea; Let’s SELL hardware to other countries instead of having the American Taxpayer pay for it. After 18 years of training the Afghan Army should be trained by now.

What could go wrong?

2banana

It ain’t gonna happen.

But America is leaving no matter what.

“Pompeo said the Taliban must take a series of steps, including cutting ties with Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups, continue to fight ISIS, pursue communications with the Afghan government and officials, and embrace a more inclusive future.”

They’ll just do like they did when Obama announced a withdrawal date. Lay low until we leave and then start blowing their shithole up again.

When Bernie legalizes heroin though, that should definitely improve the common Afghani’s life. Do you suppose our kids and grandkids will be protesting another war there in 30 years with “No blood for opiates!”?

Skippy

We should have left when OBL was taken out
Why we have lingered there is above me

Commissar

The Trump admin pretty much capitulated on the negotiations to get a win right now.

So this agreement will lead to a Atari, khan takeover of Southern Afghanistan.

But, honestly, who gives a shit at this point?

Trying to “secure the victory” was unlikely no matter what the agreement looked like.

It will have been two decades of war and a few years after we leave the Taliban will likely end up with much of the same territory they had in 2000.

Commissar

“Taliban” not “Atari,Kan”

That was a strange autocorrect. I hope. Maybe I had a micro stroke.

Hondo

Nah. You just confused commenting with playing a video game. (smile)

Although for that part of the world, “Atari Khan” would kinda make sense as a personal or organizational name.
