‘Miracle on Ice’ team struggles with backlash from donning ‘Keep America Great’ hats at Trump rally.

| February 26, 2020

From the Washington Post:

The team became the latest group entangled in the fierce cultural fight over the meaning of the Trump campaign’s most successful piece of merchandise, which critics view as a symbol of hate and racism.

The “Miracle” team is the latest group to become entangled in the fierce cultural fight over the meaning of the Trump campaign’s most successful piece of merchandise, one that has raised tens of millions of dollars since 2016, according to Brad Parscale, Trump’s 2020 campaign manager. Last spring, Parscale said, the campaign surpassed 1 million sales of the $25 red “Make America Great Again” hats, featuring the 2016 campaign slogan in white lettering. That was before Parscale’s team unveiled a 2020 update with the new slogan, “Keep America Great.”

Though Trump campaign officials this week declined to provide an updated tally of how many hats have been sold, their ubiquity was evident at the Las Vegas rally, where it appeared that a majority in the crowd of thousands were wearing them.

Beyond their fundraising prowess, the “MAGA” and “KAG” hats have served as potent marketing for the president’s specific brand of nationalistic, us-versus-them politics, through which he has risen to power by provoking and accentuating the nation’s deep divisions of race, ethnicity and gender.

Oh please, there is no “fierce cultural fight” over this hat.  I have seen people wearing those things in all kinds of places, nobody seems to notice much.  Even seen a few in Freeport, Grand Bahama recently.  We do not have a deep division of race, ethnicity, and gender in this country.  It simply does not exist in America.

The MAGA slogan has been impugned by critics as an implicit desire to return to an era in American history when the white male ruling class did not feel threatened by minorities and women.

“It’s hard to believe there are still people who don’t get that it means, ‘Keep America white,’ and ‘Keep America free of Mexican immigrants,’?” said Matthew A. Sears, a professor of classics and ancient history at the University of New Brunswick in Canada who has written critically about the Trump hats.

HAHAHAHAHA, the Derp goes on.  I do not feel threatened by anyone because of the color of their skin, but I do live with a very scary woman.  I live with a scary Soviet that spent four and a half years going through the immigration process the correct way.  I do not know of one person that wants to ‘Keep America White’ and ‘Keep America free of  Mexican immigrants’.  I do know a bunch of people, including myself and the former Soviet,  that do not want hoards of people pouring across the border with no accountability.  I am sure you could fill a bus somewhere with idiots that do believe those things, but you could fill a bus full of people that think boiled okra is good food.

Trust me, any victory over a Soviet needs to be celebrated.

FIRST it was the Confederate Battle Flag. (The design taken from the Cross of Saint Andrew). Then it became War Memorial Statues, including WWI Crosses. Now it is a baseball cap and a rock in MA. Next thing you know a cafe can’t serve soul food, ‘specially black eyed peas, fried chicken, turnip greens, or corn bread. And don’t even think about pictures of sliced watermelon. Say good bye to Aunt Jemima, Jim Dandy, and Uncle Ben’s food products. Give me en effing break.

I’m wid you Dave, this has gotten ridiculous. I know a goodly number of people from an assortment of other countries that became American Citizens the legal way and they feel the same. Apply for it, and then continue to work to make the USA the greatest Nation and best place on this Blue Marble to live. If this Country is so bad, why does everyone want to come here. Take away all the free sh^t and you’ll do away with the “immigration problem.”

When the Nazis gained power in Germany, first to go were the Memorials deemed unfit.
When Communists took power, they did the same.

I too see the similarities.

SFC D

You can add the ISIS and Taliban fucks to that list. If it wasn’t theirs, it had to go.

A Proud Infidel®™

Yes, just like the Bamiyan Buddha statues.

How long will it take for them to protest against the Florida and Alabama state flags because they look like the Confederate flag even though they are based off the Cross of Burgundy (though they both do not have the chevrons mixed in with the stripes) which was the original flag of Spain before the current red and yellow one with the coat of arms was adopted (which originally was the Spanish naval ensign and IRC it was adopted in 1731 as the national flag) even though the background is white and the stripes are red? Oh wait, never mind. That’s right, because the Spanish were imperialist and stole land from the Native Americans. I forgot. We can’t have that either. Oh darn it!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_of_Burgundy

Cameron Kingsley

I was wrong. The current flag’s design originated in 1785 and didn’t become the national flag until 1843. The current flag originated in 1981.

Off with your head…..

This feels like an episode of Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s Fun with Flags. 😉

Cameron Kingsley

Glad to be of service. But in all seriousness, I wonder how long it will take before someone does protest against the Florida and Alabama state flags because they look like the Confederate flag.

5th/77th FA

CK, they already have. A bill gets brought up most every year in each State’s House for a change. Usually dies in committee. It is not a matter of if, but when, all things related to Confederate History will be erased. The Flags and the statues were the easily picked low hanging fruit.

Cameron Kingsley

Even though their flags are Spanish based as both were originally under the control of Spain? They may have similar designs but they are not the same flag. God, these people are stupid. If they need to see what the Cross of Burgundy looks like, they can go to the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine or the Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Puerto Rico, both of which usually fly one (I know the latter does fly it, along with the Puerto Rican flag and the American flag). Plus, it predates the Stars and Bars by several years.

I was in line at ATM. An african american lady in front of my turned, looked at me and scowled. I asked her what was wrong and she said, “how can you wear that in public?” I asked her what the hell she was talking about. She said, “that Trump hat”. I told her ,”Lady it is an Ace hardware hat”. People are so stupid these days. My weakness for free hats…..ah sigh.

The Stranger

I’m thinking about getting 2 hats…a blue MAGA hat and a red hat that says “Settle Down It’s Just a Fucking Hat!”

USAF RET

^^^^this. Good luck with people being able to read all of that. My hat literally said, “ACE”

If you are ‘triggered’ by hat, then YOU are the problem. Its not the wearer of the hat, or the hat itself…its YOU! Its time for these schmucks to join the rest of us at the adult table…geez!

Comm Center Rat

When I wear my blue with red lettering FSA cap people look confused. I have to explain it stands for Free Shit Army. They get downright mean usually saying this is America the Land of Opportunity and I don’t deserve Free Shit.

Then in my best Clint Eastwood voice I tell them: “Deserves got nothin’ to do with it.”

A Proud Infidel®™

The look on the Soviet Team players’ faces said something like “We get long vacation in Siberia now!”

Drag Racing Maniac

For wearing a MAGA hat?

A Proud Infidel®™️

I was referring to the USSR Team Players in the Olympic video!

Mick

In addition to being ‘triggered’ by the MAGA and KAG hats, the snowflakes are also still pissed off that the ‘Miracle on Ice’ hockey team embarrassed the communist utopia Soviet Union so badly on the international stage.

Unforgivable!

The Flyers playing the Soviets in 76. They kicked the crap out of them so bad they left the ice and went back to the bus. The only reason they came back to the ice was to get paid.

Fyrfighter

Ahh the Broad Street Bullies!.. All of those hits would be illegal today, but I loved going to the Spectrum to see the Flyers as a kid..

OWB

To misunderstand the meaning of MAGA and KAG, do they believe that racism and slavery were the greatest accomplishments of this country?

I lost my dog to diabetes in Aug 2016.
Had dozens of his tennis balls left over.
Wrote on them “Stop Hillary” and left them in
various places. I even started buying more
and tossed them in rivers and streams and lakes.
As you know…it worked.

For past three years I have been doing the same
thing but with the slogan MAGA written with
a red magic marker. I toss them in the rivers
as I cross them on the interstate. I leave them
in all sorts of places. Hundreds of them.
Go to Walmart and buy the yellow bulk bags.

What kid or dog would not pick one up and bring
it home? Imagine the discussions that would
ensue when little johnny can’t play ball with
the scary MAGA tennis ball.

Go ahead. Try it for yourself. It’s fun.

I think it’s pretty telling of the left and their minions that they think America was “great” when we had slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow.

Our idea of American greatness differs.

Ret_25X

Let’s make sure we understand what they think they are saying…not that it matters because its like understanding why a 3 year old throws a tantrum…but here goes

1. slavery was like…bad…m’kay?
2. slavery existed in like…America…m’kay?
3. therefore, America bad…m’kay?
4. by reason, if America bad, making America great again is rayziz…m’kay?
5. slavery never existed anywhere else on earth, ever…m’kay?
6. reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Did I get the searing intellectual hotness of the dope left correct with this assessment?

It’s almost as bad as the “hell ya! ‘murica” crowd.

Ret_25X

my mistake…I said “almost as bad” when, in fact, I meant “far worse”…

in fact, I meant, there is no comparing the two at all.

Ret_25X

upon further reflection, I realize that comparing the “murica crowd to the weenies is just plain old slander and I apologize to all ‘muricans.

the old 25X will now go back to his regularly scheduled day of working with pink haired crazies at the IRS–this is punishment in itself…

OWB

That only works when you carefully ignore the fact that ‘Murica/’Muricans led the way to eliminating slavery worldwide. Of course, that doesn’t matter.

Sure, slavery still exists. But the major strides in reducing the numbers came from where?

Here’s a clue: it wasn’t Democrats who did it. What they did manage was to institute policies and programs which led to the current form of US slavery – poverty, drug abuse, criminal incarceration, etc. They saw an opportunity to finally quit blocking civil rights and turn it into something worse in the 1960’s.

Comm Center Rat

“The black family survived centuries of slavery and generations of Jim Crow, but it has disintegrated in the wake of the liberals’ expansion of the welfare state.”

Hack Stone

“America was founded on slavery!”

Well, up until the American Revolution, this plot of land was a colony of Great Britain. Shouldn’t they share in the blame of slavery? And what about the Dutch, who transported those slaves from Africa? Why do they get a free pass? And let’s not forget those tribes in Africa who sold their captured prisoners into slavery.

And if you are so damn fired up about slavery, why not protest the ongoing slave trade in Northern Africa today? Or how about all of those exploited children in Third World Nations working in hazardous conditions to mine the precious metals so that the enlightened among us can have yet another cell phone and electric car? No, it’s only white males that can exploit minorities.

I’ve been around more than seven decades

Not here in America anyway.
Can’t say for my time overseas.

am all out of guilt and tired of it.

5th/77th FA

The supposed last former American Slave died in 1971, claiming to have been born in 1841. The jury is still out on the validity of that claim. Irregardless of all of that, any repatriations that any former slave feel they have coming were paid in full, in blood, by the 650,000 some odd killed between 1861 and 1865. And by the billions of taxpayer dollars spent since then.

IMO all of this raciss talk is more setting up of the attempt for more “repatriations”. The true history of the African Slave Trade is not taught because it does not fit the desired narrative.

rgr769

I think you meant “reparations.” Although, some of those squawking they are entitled reparations would benefit from being repatriated to some third world shithole.

5th/77th FA

You are correct Counselor, I did mean reparations v repatriations in this sense. Mea culpa for not properly proofreading. However, if one studies Old Honest Abe’s writing closely enough, one will find where Abe thought that it would be best to repatriate the Africans, back to Africa, in particularly to the Colony of Liberia. Some students of history have suggested that Lincoln had ordered the Navy blockading ships to move into Southern Harbors and prepare to start removing the Africans after Lee’s Surrender. There are conspiracy theorists that claim this action was one of the reasons why Seward and Stanton were part of the assassination plot. The desire to keep the Africans to work the confiscated/abandoned cotton plantations was one thing that led to the sharecropping system that arose after the War. Another case of how/where the politicians brought grief down upon the people.

rgr769

You are correct. It is a well documented fact that Lincoln thought the solution to the “Negro question” after the war was essentially won was to ship them all back to Africa. Given how Liberia turned out, Blacks here should be happy that plan was never implemented on a large scale.

26Limabeans

So It is possible that one of the many black guys I served with
were pretty close to the truth.
I was born and raised in the
Boston suburbs. Grew up fast in
the Army but learned a whole lot
from southern guys while in.
Your knowledge is well received.

5th/77th FA

Good chance they were ‘beans and Thanks for the kind words. Just as Gone With The Wind was not an accurate portrayal of the War, Roots was not an accurate portrayal of the Slavery Issue, The Movie Glory was not a true History of the 54th Mass Rgmt, the racial issues and supposed prejudice was not as bad down here as in other sections of the country. I won’t sit here and say that there weren’t problems, from all races, but for the most part we all got along with one another. Keep in mind when Sherman marched thru Georgia (and other Southern States) he burned the food and homes of the black folks just as much as he did the white folks. There was also a very big spike in mixed race children born down here 9 months after they went thru. Even in the 1960s when Detroit, LA, Chicago, ect were burning, we had very few “race riots” down here. The bs that happened in Selma was not repeated and again, some students of history have shown that a lot of that was instigated by outside whites v the locals. When I was serving it seemed as if the Blacks and Puerto Ricans had more problems with one another than anyone else.

And while we are dispelling urban myths, I’ll just leave this right here; Epstein didn’t kill himself and neither will Weinstein.

Seems to me there’s a line from some song, can’t quite remember which, that goes “to the shores of Tripoli”… and as I further recall, that line refers to a military incursion by some naval infantry of the United States in response to some muslims in North Africa taking white (Christian) folks as slaves… Does anyone else have such a recollection?
