Weekend Open Thread

Field of lavender. Spring colors have already arrived in parts of the country and will arrive in yours in the near future if it still looks like winter. (HilidonMusic)

The vernal equinox is this coming Thursday, March 19, 2020. This is the astronomical first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Other parts of the world use the meteorological start date, which is on the first of the month. Meteorological spring began on March 1. Enjoy your weekend.

SPRING. HAS. *SPRUNG*!!!!!!!!

Well, another WoT and well, another battle gone.
This time, I think it’s going to be my last because I’m starting to be a dick about holding on to my 5-dom of Greatness.
I have every belief that unimpeded by my skills, 5th/77th FA very well may match my 5 alive WoT Record and quite possibly surpass it.

NOTICE!!!!

I am now Officially putting myself in WoT “FIRST!” quarantine to see who the next and succeeding WOT KOB really is.

And now on to the festivities.

Claw

Now hold on just a gall-durned moment. A review of the entries posted to the Coveted Book of WOT Firsts does not back up your claim of a 5-dom/5 alive WoT Record.

It shows a Three-fer from 21 April to 05 May 2017 and then a Four-fer from 23 March to 13 April 2018, but no Five-fer has ever been credited to you.

Humbly request you submit the inclusive dates that you believe this Five-fer occurred and an in-depth review of the Book will be conducted to verify authenticity./smile

ChipNASA

AH HA!!I have been corrected. A 5-fer has NOT happened, I did have a coveted 4-fer, yes, and maybe it’s the aim for a 5-fer that addled my WOT btain.
I do stand corrected, thanks CLAW for tending to the Book of WoT Firsts as I do manage the HoI and ToT.

Cheers
Chip 4-Fer NASA

Claw

Roger – You’re Welcome.

Just a note. You would have credited with another Three-fer for the period of 04 Dec to 18 Dec 2015 if you had only included the word “First” somewhere in your comment, but, Alas, you did not./smile

ninja

Durn, Claw.

Kinda now wish you and I could have served together.

I would have recommended you to become a Warrant Officer and THEN snatch you up to be my Property Book Officer.

PBOs. Big Responsibilty.

Keeping track of Government Property worth $$$$$$$$. Some sensitive items as well.

Claw

Thanks for the kudos, ninja. I spent the last eight years of my career waiting for the 761 WO field to come open for applications, but that never happened. I gave up on it completely when Big Army did away with the direct appointment routine and said that in order for me to become a WO, all applicants would have to go to finishing school to learn to wash their hands after taking a piss./smile

ninja

Claw:

You are so welcome…and I meant every word.

Yep. I do remember the Army changing the ROE for WOs and Direct Commissioning and Schooling.

You would have made a great CWO. Best of both worlds,i.e. knowledge and leadership skills in both NCOs and Officers (yes, there ARE knowledgable 2LTs out there…they are called Mustangs..😎😉).

Thank You for being the Keeper of Coveted Book of WOT Firsts and for keeping us in line when it comes to FIRSTs! as well as providing us the wisdom of the NSN of items.

5th/77th FA

Claw, Thank you for correcting the Airedaled Wingwipingchairforcepuke. I wuz a gonna throw that bovine excrement flag on his claim, but I had to hat up and skate. Been playing catch up since my return. And he has revealed a tactical advantage he has had. No wonder he can FIRST Block me. Work computer? Aha, knowing that it’s a high speed, very low drag fiber optic up to 100 gig light speed mofo network he’s on. I KNOW that is the least slowest thing he’s running on, cause I BUILT those systems. I’m hung out here on a 6 meg twisted pair copper and giving ’em hell. Algenon Dickinson was outgunned at Bexar, but he held Santy Anny at bay for 13 days. Major John “The Gallant Young” Pelham fought off an entire DIVISION of Infantry with a broken Parrot and a 12 pounder Napoleon all damn day near Fredericksburg, so BRING IT BEOYTCH, I ain’t skeered. Why don’t you go make yo’self useful and turn a wingwiping golf course back into a rifle or impact range.

So, Claw, back to the Coveted Book of FIRST. We may need another tally of the count. I knew that there was NO Ace 5 in a row, and thought I remembered only 2/3 quads and a small number of 3 petes. Dog faced pony solgers and assorted miscreanted d’weeded ne’er do wells have inquiring minds. And Thank you for your continued disrespect.

Hack Stone

Yet again, the vast right conspiracy by lying dog-faced pony soldiers has denied Hack Stone the highly coveted and rarely awarded Weekend Open Thread First title. Hack Stone would just like to remind visitors to this page that the moderators of This Ain’t Hell are misogynistic racist Deplorables, and yet for some reason, proud of it.

Hack Stone will instead remind visitors to this site that the proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the federal government is working diligently to help resolve this Coronavirus crisis. As we speak, Software Engineers in our Wuhan development laboratory have placed the Y3K on the back burner and are working around the clock to develop antivirus software that will eliminate this threat to mankind.

March 13 is a trying time for some military veterans, as it is National Coconut Torte Day, and Congress passed this legislation without any consideration to the impact that such a day would have on those who have survived IEC (Improvised Explosive Coconuts) encounters.
https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-coconut-torte-day-march-13/

Hack would also like to take this time to remind you all that a very special individual turns 64 this March 18. He may have missed being lucky enough to be born on St. Patrick’s Day by one day, but that lucky sperm is enough to ensure his continued success in all of his endeavors, whether that be the Vice President of a software company, or being able to find a junkyard that has an alternator for a 1980’s vintage Jaguar. It’s hard to buy the perfect birthday gift for the man who lost everything, but gift certificates to the Bethesda Goodwill Thrift Shop seems suitable.

Finally, just a reminder that although today is Friday the 13th, but that doesn’t mean bad luck. There may just be a lucky few in the Merritt Island vicinity who will be fortunate enough to catch Phil Monkress working balls this weekend. Attendees are recommended to bring their own hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Let’s be safe out there, people.

Uh oh. Things may get ugly. The King of Battle missed his FIRST again … this means everybody else should duck for cover. Me, I’m gonna post the trivia and go hide from the evil Corona virus. Enjoy! DID YOU KNOW…? What was the original concept for the time machine in the “Back to the Future” movies? By Commissioner Wretched On this auspicious event of the 175th “Did You Know…?” column, I am going to do something I’ve never done before. I’m going to skip the introduction and get right to the trivia. Incredible, isn’t it? That after all these weeks – more than three years – I’m just chucking the whole idea of an introduction to the column and getting right to the meat. I can already tell that this idea meets with your approval. After all, who wants to read any of my silly introductions? All I do is blather on about some ridiculousness or other, with no real point except to have to make you wait for the stuff you came here for, the trivia. So, without further ado (and what the heck is ado, anyway?), here’s your column of trivia, with no goofy – oh, my. I did an introduction after all. My bad. On to the trivia. Did you know … … there is a school dedicated to elves? It’s in Reykjavik, Iceland. Called the Alfaskolinn (Elf School), it offers lectures and guided tours about elves that exist in Icelandic folklore. Studies show that more than half the people of Iceland believe in the existence of elves. Icelanders believe that there are 13 different kinds of elves as well as “hidden people,” who are the same size and look just like humans, except humans can’t see them. (Which explains a lot in today’s society, if you ask me.) … the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States is still open? Southdale Mall in Minneapolis, Minnesota, opened in 1956. It is still in operation today, some 64 years later, though it is reported that, like most malls, it has declined to just a few stores.… Read more »

It is all very interesting as well as keepsakes for future Jeopardy questions.

😊

I did not know there was a disease associated with the puns until you pointed it out to us. I found an article that addressed “Witzelsuch”, i.e. that it could be a result of a brain injury such as a stroke, but for some reason, when I posted the link, it did not show up on WOT.

Oh, well.

Keep up the great work!

AW1Ed

… you might have a condition called witzelsucht?”

JEFF! Seek professional help immediately.

ninja

Oh, dear.

Have a feeling this was going to come up.

As I shared with CW, I discovered the condition could be related to damage to the brain, such as a stroke.

The person who has it is not aware they have that condition and ironically, can’t laugh at other folks jokes.

There used to be a Commentator on TAH who displayed all of the symptons of that condition (excess of puns, telling jokes at inappropriate times, not laughing at other folks jokes, etc.etc).

A conspiracy theory linking the US army to the coronavirus now has official Chinese endorsement

A conspiracy theory linking the US army to the coronavirus now has official Chinese endorsement
A conspiracy theory linking the US army to the coronavirus now has official Chinese endorsement
Something that had been merely suggested before has now been blown wide into the open in China. A spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, Zhao Lijian, tweeted yesterday that “it might be the US army” that brought the coronavirus to China, giving an official boost to a conspiracy theory that had been allowed to circulate on Chinese social media for weeks. The conspiracy posits that 300 athletes from the US military who in October attended the 7th Military World Games in Wuhan, where the epidemic first broke out, were infected with the virus, thereby spreading it in China.

Ex-PH2

The Chinese are so incompetent that trying to NOT look incompetent makes them look even more incompetent than they are.

Is this why it’s called “losing face” elsewhere?

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Impressive stuff, I had for some years painted medieval miniatures, but nothing approaching this level of quality. Steady hands, a good eye, and some great technique.

Bravo.

The Other Whitey

Thanks, VOV. Honestly, it’s almost all stuff I picked up from watching individuals of vastly superior skill and creativity on YouTube. Many of the things I learned were so simple and obvious that I immediately thought “Christ, I’m SUCH a fuckin’ idiot if I couldn’t figure that out on my own!” Things like how to paint eyes, or something as basic as spraying down a clearcoat to protect easily-scratched paint.

Now I’m starting to pick up a little bit of weathering, hence the small scratches on the tank (done with a well-sharpened silver artist’s pencil), some minimal shading and streaking on both vehicles (Vallejo makes a wash for that, though I haven’t yet mastered it), and pigment powders (used to vary the color of the dirt, dirty up the undercarriages, and apply propellant stains to the muzzles of the tank’s main gun and coax). I still have a long way to go. I saw a diorama in the same scale on Pinterest of some infantry and an M113 sweeping a Vietnamese village that, when shot in B&W, actually looked like a real period photo except for the edge of the dio base being visible in the corner. Then there’s a Norwegian dude named Bjorn Jacobsen who, among other projects, built a 1/48 dio recreating a 1955 ramp strike on USS Hancock by an F7U Cutlass. He made a fireball and smoke plume with airbrushed cotton and steel wool, with LED lights in multiple colors inside it to make it glow like actual flames. He even has the canopy flying off as the pilot is pulling the eject handle! I’ll never be that good.

Graybeard

The panic over the COVID-19 stuff is getting silly.

All the kids in our extended AO are getting an extended Spring Break (which with TX rules means they’ll have to stay in school later in May/June to make up for it.)

Understandably, the nursing homes and hospitals are closing off access until something settles down.

Living in the country, we’re pretty well insulated from the “unwashed [hands of the] masses” – and as Hank Williams sang: Country folks can survive. We know alternatives to TP.

Theologically, Satan sows fear, and therefore the media fear-mongers are scions of Satan. But, you knew that.

ninja

Graybeard wrote:

AMEN.

11B-Mailclerk

This is a panic-demic, not so much a pan-demic.

It is basicly flu with a different shaped protein around the viral warhead and somewhat different symptoms.

Treatment is essentially the same, lacking a vaccine.

Meh.

Graybeard

The bad part is the economic impact it will have on those who depend upon folks going out to eat, vendors at sports venues, small business owners, parents who suddenly have to either take unpaid leave or find a place (where?) for their child (especially those with special-needs children)- etc ad nauseum.

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d postulate that a lot of the panic-reaction closings are targeted at the Trump-supporting demographic.

Mason

I predict this panic self-isolation will last at most a week. Then everyone will realize this wasn’t worth panicking over and they all go back to normal.

“Oh my, what did you shoot it with?” she asked.

He replied, “Shot, as in not long, yassah.”

Today, 13 March 2020, is National K9 Veterans Day.

It is a day set aside to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifices of American Military and Working dogs throughout History.

https://www.military.com/veterans-day/k9-veterans-day.html

“It was on March 13, 1942, that the Army began training for its new War Dog Program, also known as the “K-9 Corps,” according to American Humane, marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces.”

“The rest, as they say, is history. Officially a part of the service of not, the dogs of war span centuries and include such heroes as Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog, Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II and Lex, who retired with his fallen owners family and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid.”

“Today’s military dogs are valued as important members of their military units and even have their own retirement ceremonies, awards and medals and memorial services.”

Bravo Zulu to the Fur Missiles and their hoomans. Some good linkys and pictures in the Military.com link you provided for us. One picture in particular was especially poignant showing the stats of “…out of over 4000 Working Dogs that served in Vietnam, only 204 survived.”

I’m planning another trip out to Fort Robinson NE this June. In addition to it’s fame as a Cavalry Post for the Buffalo Soldiers during the Sioux Wars, it was a major training facility for working dogs during WWII. They have an excellent interpretive display and a full history of K9 Training. Pretty cool place, linky is here.

“National Medal of Honor Center Opens Where It All Began”

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/03/12/national-medal-of-honor-center-opens-where-it-all-began/

“When the nation’s highest award for military valor is draped around the neck of noteworthy recipients these days, tales of bravery on beachheads on European or Pacific island shores, sacrifice in the jungles of Vietnam or heroic acts in the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan retell those tales.”

“But, the nation’s first awards were passed down for daring scenes in the midst of the nation’s greatest turmoil: the Civil War.”

“And those first actions played out where Tennessee and Georgia meet.”

“That’s one reason why the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center opened its doors near the banks of the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in February.”

“The center is named for Coolidge, a local man who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during World War II in France.”

“Coolidge grew up in the shadow of the medal’s history. The first medals were awarded in 1863 for actions by Andrews’ Raiders in “The Great Locomotive Chase” on April 12, 1862.”

“That chase happened when two dozen Union Army volunteers, led by civilian scout James Andrews, took over a Confederate train outside a small Georgia town and rode it north toward Chattanooga. At the time the area was controlled by confederates, 200 miles behind the lines from the advancing Union Army.”

“The crew did as much damage to the rail lines as they went and then scattered into the woods.”

“The men were captured by the confederates, tried and later hanged for being unlawful combatants and spies, according to the heritage center.”

“At first six of the raiders and ultimately a total of 19 of the 24 men would be the first awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions that day.”

“Later that year another 33 Medals of Honor would be awarded for area battles at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, critical junctions in the Union Army’s march into the South to break the Confederate Army’s support.”

5th/77th FA

Gonna have to try and make it up to this one. Big fight for this museum, kinda glad Chattanooga won. Lot’s to see and do in and around Choo Choo City. Many of the 12 pounder Napoleon guns that were manufactured in Macon GA during “The War” were captured at Lookout Mountain and are on display there.

Side bars on “The Great Locomotive Chase.” I’m sure that a lot of our trains buff here are familiar with the high points. A total of 4 engines were involved, The General is the engine that the raiders stole from Conductor Fuller. It is on static display in the city of Kennesaw at the railroad museum. The FIRST locomotive that Fuller commandeered was the Yonah. He then switched to the William R. Smith. His final locomotive was the Texas, using it to run The General down. The Yonah was scrapped about 1873, the Smith was heavily damaged by Gnrl James Wilson’s Federal Cavalry in Columbus GA in April of ’65, finally being used in the WWII scrap drives. The Texas is on display at the Atlanta History Center, along with the Cyclorama. Thus endith the lesson.

Trump Expected To Declare National Emergency On Coronavirus, At Press Conference”

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-to-brief-press-on-latest-regarding-coronavirus-crisis

“President Trump announced that he plans to hold a press conference Friday afternoon to address the coronavirus crisis, as concerns over the spreading outbreak wreak havoc on the economy and American life.”

“Fox News is told the president is expected to declare a national emergency.”

“Declaring an emergency under the Stafford Act would allow Trump to mobilize the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and direct federal aid to states. Such a declaration would allow a state to request a 75 percent cost-share for expenses such as emergency workers, testing, medical supplies and vaccinations, Democrats reportedly had said in a letter sent to the president.”

Today in History, 13 March:

The seventh planet, Uranus, was discovered on 13 March 1781 completely by accident. British astronomer William Herschel was performing a survey of all stars of at least magnitude 8 – stars slightly too faint to be seen with the eye alone, in other words. That’s when he noticed a very faint object – only barely above the limit for viewing with the eye – that that moved in front of the fixed stars. This movement clearly demonstrated the object was closer to us than the stars. At first he thought he had found a comet. Later, he and others realized it was a new planet in orbit around our sun, the first new planet discovered since ancient times.

In February 1930, Clyde Tombaugh, an Astronomer, discovered a Planet. On 13 March 1930, the Staff of Lowell Observatory officially announced the discovery of a Ninth Planet which we now call Pluto.

thebesig:

I honestly did not know that.

Thank You!

There is still so much more to know what exists outside our own Universe.

A Proud Infidel®™️

Maybe even more if you just relax a little bit!

The Other Whitey

Uranus maybe. Not so sure about mine!

Ex-PH2

We now have images of a pulsar that is teardrop-shaped by its orbiting planet.

Earth also has a 2nd moon, a moonlet that recently reached our gravity well boundary and is in orbit. At some point, it will be gone, but for now, it’s out there, moving quickly through the night sky.

Nothing surprises me about space any more. Nothing.

A Proud Infidel®™️

Wow, that’s like MSDNC on steroids!

More proof liberalism is a mental disorder.

ninja

Eventually, as with all Generations, their perspectives will change.

Who remembers the “Don’t Trust Anyone Over 30” motto from the 1960s?

😎😉

Ex-PH2

I do, and now I don’t trust anyone UNDER 30. They know nothing! Nothing, I tell you!

ninja

Ex-PH2:

THAT WAS GREAT!

LOVE IT!

Thank You!

🤣😂😅😆

P.S. Our Cameron in Japan is an exception. 😉😎

Cameron K.

Thanks ninja. I try my best.😊

The Other Whitey

When I was a kid, a sweet old lady told me that any conservative under 30 has no heart, but any liberal over 30 has no brain. I figured right then that I’d rather be heartless than stupid. My mind hasn’t changed.

ninja

Saw that.

Which makes one wonder why a Married man with 3 children was in a hotel room with 2 other men.

He also was the former Mayor of Tallahassee.

So sad. For his Family, that is.

rgr769

Wow! Likely a meth-head. And many Progs think this asshat was cheated out of being the Governor of Florida by “voter suppression” or something nefarious.

Poetrooper

“Likely a meth-head.”

Likely something else, too, since he was buck-nekkid, as was the guy who overdosed. And the guy who found them had paid for the room, showing up later in the evening intending to join the “party.”

No wonder Oblowme liked Gillum so much.

Of course, by Democrat standards, this makes him the ideal choice to be Biden’s VP…

marinedad61

The whole thing sounds really GAY.
Then, a GAY coverup, of course.
(Seinfeld line) –
“Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

Roh-Dog

Nailed it! I’m not shocked, this guy is on the down low fo’sho!

marinedad61

Roh-Dog,
good catch.

Now nationally exposed as a lying dickhead,
just like our unending stream of military phonies,
Florida’s Gillum is Down Lo’ No Mo’.

AW1Ed

‘Trumped’ me again, thebesig. Poetrooper sent me the link while I was at work, and you beat me to posting. I did ask if he was any relation to Hunter “Nose Candy” Biden.

AW1Ed

You’ve never been off it, thebesig.

CNN’s Andrew Gillum found ‘inebriated’ in Miami Beach hotel room; cops recover meth
By Robert Gearty, Brian Flood

CNN contributor and former Democratic candidate for Florida governor, Andrew Gillum, was found “inebriated” early Friday morning in a hotel where meth was also recovered, according to a Miami Beach, Fla., police report.

Gillum, 40, was in the room at the Mondrian Hotel in South Beach with two other men when police arrived shortly after midnight, according to the report obtained by Fox News.

“Officers then attempted to speak to Mr. Gillum,” an officer wrote in the incident report. “Mr. Giullum was unable to communicate with officers due to his inebriated state.”

Gillum was too out of it on goof balls and/or booze to even give the cops a coherent sentence. UFB

The good news is that this will do nothing to hurt his political career because he has the correct letter after his name.

In light of the Corona Virus, The Onion should dust of this oldie:

https://politics.theonion.com/clinton-every-man-for-himself-1819564519

“My fellow Americans, your government and your once-great nation lie in ruins,” Clinton told assembled reporters. “Over the past 48 hours, the reports of rioting along the Eastern seaboard have increased to alarming levels. The National Guard reports that the Mississippi is running red with blood. And we have not had communication with any state west of the Rockies since late Sunday.”

“This new dark age shall be ruled by the strong and cunning,” Clinton said. “Obtain all the canned food, gasoline and ammunition you can, using deadly force if necessary. Stay off the main roads, which will be overrun by marauding, rogue policemen and mutinous soldiers from what was once the U.S. Army. Find a secluded spot in the wilderness and build a makeshift fortress where you can await further news, though I cannot guarantee that any will ever come.”
