An Army diver with the 569th Engineer Dive Detachment surfaces after doing an inspection during training at the Port of Tacoma, Wash., in 2016. (Spc. Adeline Witherspoon, 5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment)

The Army’s dive teams have been presented with a new mission, one that makes a bucketload of common sense.

They need purpose-oriented training and the state of Washington needs divers to go into the San Juan Islands area to remove derelict nets that endanger wildlife including seabirds, fish and marine mammals.

https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2019/07/06/heres-what-army-divers-are-going-to-haul-from-the-deep-water-in-washington-state/

From the article:   Army divers were at Utah Beach during the 1944 landings in Normandy, they deployed to Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm and they worked to repair ports in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

Their challenge now is to reach fishing nets more than 105 feet down along rocky terrain off the San Juan Islands. They’re tasked with removing the fishing nets during the Army Deepwater Derelict Net Removal project July 8-28.

The project will give Army divers a chance to train for deep-water diving operations, this time working off a contracted vessel, the release said. The mission will be part of the Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training Program. – Article

This works for me, and I hope for marine wildlife, too.

Getting in some real world training while doing good things for the locals. Win-win!
Thanks for posting, Ex.

I just hope none of them get killed. Diving among nets is high risk.

But speaking of public needs and the need for training…in Dallas, the morons that run this city decided to install a standing wave “feature” on the Trinity River near downtown. Several million dollars later, golly gee, we had us a standing wave “feature”. Problem was, it rendered a navigable waterway un-navigable. The Corps of Engineers were not amused. So, logically, the city spent several more million dollars to have it removed. Damn shame the military doesn’t have a group of guys (or “team” if you will) that need some training blowing shit up in the water. The 10 million dollars 5he the City Of Dallas wasted could have been wasted somewhere else…or maybe paid for a police force that they no longer have.

“They plant mines as well as delete them.”

Didn’t we recently have a poser that claimed to that in the Viet of the Nam?
Secret Squirrely guy.

Needless to say, Dallas like all other big cities and even more and more of the smaller cities are controlled by d-rats and brainiacs like our own berzerkly clown is.
They have no cents, common or otherwise…

Great initiative!

Maybe the stank ass hippies in the previous ecology thread would volunteer to help clean up the nets mess. Raise awareness by going down or diving deeper. Those birds are prolly already stoned.
