Large Iranian navy ship sinks in Gulf after blaze

IRIS Kharg

Iran has managed to sink its largest military ship, Islamic Republic of Iran Ship (IRIS) Kharg, near the port of Jask in the  Gulf of Oman. The vessel caught fire and, after some 20 hours of fire fighting efforts, sank. The crew reportedly was safely evacuated prior to the loss. Kharg was being deployed to international waters for a naval training exercise.

The cause of the fire has not been made clear. In a statement, Iran’s navy said the fire started in one of the ship’s systems, without giving further details.

Iran’s largest warship catches fire, sinks in Gulf of Oman

AMIR VAHDAT and JON GAMBRELL

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The largest warship in the Iranian navy caught fire and later sank Wednesday in the Gulf of Oman under unclear circumstances, the latest calamity to strike one of the country’s vessels in recent years amid tensions with the West.

The blaze began around 2:25 a.m. and firefighters tried to contain it, the Fars news agency reported, but their efforts failed to save the 207-meter (679-foot) Kharg, which was used to resupply other ships in the fleet at sea and conduct training exercises. State media reported 400 troops on board fled the vessel, with some 20 suffering injuries.

The vessel sank near the Iranian port of Jask, some 1,270 kilometers (790 miles) southeast of Tehran on the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf. Satellite photos from Planet Labs Inc. analyzed by The Associated Press showed the Kharg off Jask with no sign of a fire as late as 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Photos circulated on Iranian social media of sailors wearing life jackets evacuating the vessel as a fire burned behind them. Fars published video of thick, black smoke rising from the ship early Wednesday morning. Satellites from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that track fires from space detected a blaze near Jask that started just before the time of the fire reported by Fars.

Iranian officials offered no cause for the fire aboard the Kharg, though they said an investigation had begun.

Before any speculation on the cause, please remember Iran is perfectly capable of damaging its own vessels without US or Israeli assistance. Shipboard firefighting is valid training, as is at-sea rescue, so they did get some training after all.

Too bad, so sad.

ChipNASA

Ahem…

Yeah, nah, I can’t squirt any…

The only thing better is if it was free floating and then ran aground and then sent the COUNTRY on fire too. That would have been nice.

Mason

Couldn’t happen to a nicer Ayatollah.

Tallywhagger

Ahhh, so sad. I wonder what happened! Be sure and give our best to Mohammad and tell him that Allah asked how he’s been doing 🙂

Israel: Iran, you need to get Hamas under control.

Iran: Die you Zionist scum! What are you going to do?

Israel: Ok.

To paraphrase the kids these days, “fusk around and find out.”

Burn, motherfucker.

What’s this do?

OH SHIT!!!

Green Thumb

Another example of the fine craftsmanship one would associate with All-Points Logistics.

Meh, tough shit for those goat molesters.

Haha!

Iranian Navy’y biggest ship up in puff of smoke and hell-fire?
GOOD! Now, if the rest of the country could only follow suit…

Anonymous

Big fire at major oil refinery near Tehran now, too.

Sapper3307

Question?
Doe’s Goat Locker have a different meaning for the Iranian navy?

Hack Stone

Asking for a friend?

KoB

Yes it does. That’s the fella that keeps the goat in a headlock so the Iranian Sailors can practice up on the goat for “Man Love Thursdays”.

I bought a few phuques at the K Roger today, but I have none to give to the Iranians.

Was the hull breached or too much wet stuff on the red stuff to sink it as almost happened to the SS Normandy in Manhatten during WW2 until the ship was stabilized.

The Other Whitey

The same runoff phenomenon also nearly capsized USS Franklin during her ordeal. The captain of USS Santa Fe ran his own ship underneath Franklin’s listing starboard side to prop up the carrier and prevent her from rolling over.

rgr1480

Had to Wiki that!

“… her commander Captain Harold C. Fitz was awarded the Navy Cross and three of her sailors were awarded Silver Stars for risking their own lives to rescue Franklin crewmen from the water….”

Tallywhagger

Bless their little hearts, now one of their refineries has caught on fire… guess things are not looking good for Netanyahu.

Make hay while the sun is shining!

Mason

Makes you wonder if the Israel Space Agency recently launched a giant magnifying glass into orbit.

It was being placed to create an artificial reef. The sailors took the opportunity to make a swim call. Those weren’t Limpet Mines that got away from them, they were err, navigational aids.

John Seabee

Oopsy… Now if they would replicate a ‘large fire’ at Natanz.

Poetrooper

Joe Biden is in the process of doing just that–turning Natanz into a free-fire zone for the Israeli Air Force.

Hack Stone

This is what happens when you purchase your fire suppression equipment from All Points Logistics.

This just makes me smile…

I served on a similar type ship, an AOR, before they handed off the resupply mission to the USNS. It’s basically a floating gas station and ammo/magazine storage facility. A fire onboard ship is some SERIOUS shit. Take it from an HT/DC cuz fighting fires was our thing.

Poetrooper

If it wasn’t the Israelis that sank it, then it was one of their most dependable allies:

The Iranian navy…🤣🤣🤣

11B-Mailclerk

Was that their only significant underway replenishment ship? If so, the Iranian Navy now has a very much shorter leash.

Aw….

Hack Stone

Have they ever ventured outside of The Persian Gulf?

A Proud Infidel®™

A few years ago they SAID that they were going to sail one of their Navy Ships into US Territorial Waters, but of course nothing happened.

cobrakai99

It wasn’t just their most significant. It was the only one. I have seen some reports that it was an old Soviet ship. Might have the same problem as the Russian carrier that just keeps catching fire.

BlueCord Dad

Not Russian. Laid down January ‘76 in Wallsend-on-Tyne, Great Britain.
