AF Academy’s “Diversity and Inclusion Reading Room”

Not a Safe Space

The Air Force has decided in order to better grow cadets into Air Warriors, a “Diversity and Inclusion Reading Room” was necessary. Exactly how this will assist in achieving that goal has been left unsaid. Poetrooper sends.

Exploring big ideas: Diversity and Inclusion Reading Room opens at Academy

By Ray Bowden, U.S. Air Force Academy Public Affairs

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — A special reading room at the Air Force Academy might be small, but two professors say it offers cadets and faculty a treasure trove of big ideas and a safe space for open discussion.

The Diversity and Inclusion Reading Room in McDermott Library contains “a specially curated selection of books available for borrowing, furnishings arranged for informal discussion and a response board for cadet feedback,” said Daniel Couch, an assistant English professor at the school.

“Our intention is to create an informal space for cadets and permanent party to broaden and deepen their exploration of the issues involved in diversity, inclusion and justice,” Couch said.

Mark Jensen, president of the Academy’s faculty senate and a philosophy professor, said the reading room is the result of teamwork between faculty members and the Academy’s ongoing Critical Conversation series that formed in the wake of George Floyd’s Death.

Floyd, an unarmed Black man, died May 25 in Minneapolis when a white police officer pinned him to the ground with a knee to the neck. Protesters across the world rallied in reaction, sparking an international movement surrounding racial injustice in the U.S.

“People kept mentioning books in those conversations,” Jensen said. “There’s hundreds of books that ought to be available.”

The reading room opened at the start of the Spring Semester in January and contains a wide range of “primary sources, secondary sources, historical accounts, contemporary discussions, empirical studies and fiction,” Couch said.

Had they named it the Diversity & Unbiasing Reading Room, it could’ve been called the ‘DURR’ room..

I’ve got zero problems with books on diversity issues, and plan on reading “The Color of Law” that VOV mentioned the other day soon… but I don’t see a need for a special section. Doesn’t the Dewey Decimal system give them that anyway? Still, I’m not gonna get all bent out of shape over it, either. Librarians and academics can curate their own spaces how they see fit.

Looks more like a detainment area at some sort of facility.
Is that concertina i see in the background outside the windows?

Carlton

It would be, except I’m sure that Academy “leadership” will have “future air warriors” assigned to the room 24/7. All “volunteers” of course.

To my thinking if they are designating this as a “safe space” it makes me wonder if what they are trying to achieve is one place on campus where you are always permitted to speak freely without concerns over retaliation for your words. If that’s the case I have far less an issue with the idea. At some point this country still needs an honest discussion about these issues because they’re not going to go away, nor are they going to go back into hiding. If the sole purpose of training cadets is military education, this room is unnecessary to that goal perhaps. But if the purpose of training cadets includes understanding the nation they are tasked to protect along with the type of young people they will start to see coming into the military this room may provide a place to discuss uncomfortable ideas that they were previously discouraged from discussing. The world changes, militaries must change with it as well or face being left behind. With less than one percent of the population serving now we need a plan that extends beyond simply doing what we’ve always done and hoping for the best. Our enemies are not slowing down, anything that creates leaders in the military able to understand and reach out to everyone under their command is a benefit to the overall mission. Especially in areas like the cyber space…some of the best and brightest in that area are not at all what some old guys like me might think of when we consider what makes a good soldier…if we can’t learn to understand how to attract those people to the military the military will always be behind in areas of hacking defense and overall cyber security… If a guy in a dress who thinks he’s a she is the best candidate for a cyber position and wants to serve our nation the nation ought to have a plan to make that person comfortable in the military and comfortable serving because that person will find a place in the cyber world whether we like that idea or… Read more »

I see what you did there.
*I*, for one, don’t need to be “groomed”.
LOL
😀 😀 😀

And I quote…

rgr769

All they need is a banner on the back wall saying: “All Caucasians are racist oppressors; all brown people their victims.” On second thought, it should use “white people” instead of Caucasian, since some of them don’t know that word.

(See how I used they and them as pronouns so as to include and not offend the trannies and two spirits.)

Poetrooper

Well would you look at this all you ol’ reactionary reprobates who hang out here at TAH–even a Rangers can get all wokey and culturally compliant…😜😜😜

KoB

Way back yonder a safe place meant a well dug in position and the ability to fight back, under cover. All about the feelz now-a-days.

C’mon, that’s as bad as modern politically-correct hogwash (actually makes more rational sense than most of it, scarily enough).

The Air Force I knew is no longer…. RIP.

When did the military become social justice warriors instead of the nation’s defenders?

AW1 Rod

It’s not just the Air Force. This garbage has insinuated its way into every branch, although a dedicated “reading room” is a first, I think.

If we ever again become involved in a force-on-force symmetrical engagement, we’re going to have our asses handed to us.

The Good Idea Fairy wouldn’t even advocate that Dumfuukk idea.

Forest Bondurant

Good Idea Fairy

n. (gud i-de-ɘ fār-ē)

Definition: Mischievous and highly dangerous sprite; known for planting the seeds of faulty ideas within the brains of those around it. Good Idea Fairies feed upon the frustration and confusion created by the implementation and use of those ideas it suggests. Found most around TOC’s and other areas with high concentrations of fobbits, TOC-roaches, and pogues. The feeble-minded, inexperienced, and easily confused are most often targeted by the Good Idea Fairy. Causes the brains of those affected to become addled, unable to tell good ideas from bad ones, and utterly incapable of hearing actual good advice.

Diversity and inclusion can make war obsolete and unit the world in good feelings and harmony, of course! Kumbaya, kumbaya!

Mason

As an experiment, I’d like to see a cadet engage another cadet on the frequent, acceptable, casual, and allowed use of the N-word by certain racial groups and see how quickly they get kicked out as a racist.

“Safe spaces” are rarely really safe.

Poetrooper

All cadets have free speech but some cadets have more free speech than others.

Now where have we heard that concept before?

Not sure what Floyd’s has to with the Air Force…

Well, the fentanyl overdose harkens of the infamous Ether Bunny story for some reason…

Claw

This is what happens when the current CSAF doesn’t have an Air Medal./s

rgr769

With the right supply item, the old 76Y can cure almost any problem.

Claw

Yep, you’re right. Here’s what this old DMOS 76Z has to say about the Air Forces’ “Air Medal Lite”.

8455-01-303-9538 Decoration Set, Aerial Achievement Medal. Established 1988, worth 3 points for enlisted promotion purposes.

8455-00-269-5747 Decoration Set, Air Medal. Established 1942, worth 5 points for enlisted promotion purposes.

I still see politicians even some Republicans saying the George Floyd was “murdered” by those Minneapolis police officers, despite the findings of the medical examiner who performed Floyd’s autopsy. Floyd had about 2.5 times the lethal level of fentanyl in his blood, along with meth, cocaine and a couple of other illegal drugs. His lungs were heavily congested, which is a common post-mortem finding in the tox screens of those who have died of fentanyl overdoses. That congestion is why Floyd was having trouble breathing when the officers took him out of his car. But he still had enough breath to fight them and resist when they tried to put him in a squad car. The officers obviously didn’t believe him when he claimed he was having trouble breathing, especially since he was saying that when sitting in his own car. This is because ever since Eric Garner died saying he “can’t breath” Blacks have said this whenever resisting arrest, even when screaming at the arresting officers. Thus, we have the false crying “wolf” syndrome at play. Finally, the autopsy showed what Chauvin did inflicted no injury to the man’s neck, no evidence of bruising, no fractured hyoid bone, etc. Also, Floyd’s major cardiac arteries were 75% plus occluded and there was cardiac evidence of heart muscle damage.

Now, I am not saying the stress of fighting being arrested had nothing to do with his death. But, all he had to do was comply and get in the police car, and then he would likely have died of OD when in the car, being booked, or in a cell.

Escape by ambulance has definitely been a thing for a few years and is on the rise. It requires a lot of time, timing and talent to take someone in to custody who is faking an illness or injury. Most departments will err on the side of the faker for liability reasons. But not always.

UpNorth

Way back when, we would stuff the arrestee in the ambulance, with a ride-along officer, and cuffed to the gurney. After a while, they wised up and started complaining of medical maladies after being booked and assigned a place in the holding cell.

MustangCryppie

I can’t speak for all departments, but at Honolulu PD if the perp said they had an injury or med condition, off to the ER with them. No choice.

Also, i used the knee on the neck technique several times. No issues. No one ever even complained that they couldn’t breathe.

My opinion is that Floyd and especially Garner were having heart attacks when they said they couldn’t breathe. I felt the same way when i almost had a heart attack.

Mason

Yeah. The trial is going to be a total shit show. Based on the medical examiners report alone, the prosecution has no case. It’s the first time I’ve ever read a report whose title isn’t supported by any findings in the report itself.

David

You’re assuming the verdict is not predetermined. Silly man.

Slow Joe

Yeah. A lot of conservative commentators dropped crap on Derek Chauvin without knowing what they were talking about or waiting for the autopsy.

I lost a lot of respect for the conservative commentariat class. They can eat shit for all I care. They make millions out of us while abandoning conservative principles the moment the shit hits the fan and the Left smell blood in the water.

I will continue watching/listening to old recordings of Milton Friedman. At least he died loyal to the principles of free market capitalism, small government, and our constitutional freedoms.

penguinman000

Young men and women learning how to be effective warrior leaders clearly need a safe space to exchange ideas…

This is the exact kind of jack-a-nape idea that gets troops killed needlessly.

AW1 Rod

Precisely.

Does anyone believe that our enemies are spending one minute worrying about this stupid bullshit in THEIR militaries?

When China, Russia, Iran or North Korea see these headlines or read about this pointless shit, they see opportunity. They see vulnerabilities, weaknesses and gaps or seams in U.S. military resolve, warrior mentality and unit cohesion that they can exploit.

Anonymous

Cadets will use it to get busy with members of the opposite sex.

Mason

As long as it’s interracial fornication, I think that fits the spirit if not the explicit intent of the room.

I wonder if all the Dr. Suess books are allowed or were they burned at the Academy’s last book burning if they had one?????

FuzeVT

Not sure how to post photos but here is the link to a Dr. Seuss cartoon I found yesterday and scanned. Needed more, probably, now than it was when it was drawn, just prior to our entry into WWII.

So they are -ok- with …

David

And no one thought of just changing the offending illustrations?

11B-Mailclerk

“Are you now or have you ever been reading Dr Seuss?”

Green Thumb

Its the Air Force.

I doubt it.

Why would they burn their textbooks?

FuzeVT

The only safe spaces required in America are ones were you can be a conservative and no one tries to cancel you.

26Limabeans

I consider my 2 acres of America to be such a place.
A good hill to die on should it come to that.

D’s Cantina welcomes any and all respectful spirited political discussion. But conservatism is still in charge.

So will this “Safe Space” also come with Pla-Doh and coloring books a la UC Berzerkely and other snowflake universities?

Is this the same Air Force that is so steeped in so much racism and white supremacy that 4 black cadets at The USAFA Prep School had a racist note pinned to their dorm room door? I guess the black cadet that pinned that racist note to his own door will be the one leading the readings on diversity and inclusion? Am I right? Its such a problem when the demands for racism and white supremacy exceed the supply. What will be the next “boogeyman”? Err, ahhh “boogeyperson”? err “boogeynonbinarygender-fluidpersonofcolorindigenoushumxn”?
