Christopher David – Gets his few minutes of fame

| July 21, 2020

This Christopher David fellow walked up to a group of Federal Riot Police and wanted to have a conversation with them while they were in the midst of clearing the streets.  They communicated with him in short order.  Of course, the Leftist Loons see him as a victim/hero of some kind.

A Navy Veteran Had a Question for the Feds in Portland. They Beat Him in Response.

The veteran said he wanted to ask the officers whether they felt their actions violated the Constitution. Video shows them tear-gassing him and smashing his hand with baton blows.

Christopher J. David had largely ignored the protests in downtown Portland, Ore., but when he saw videos of unidentified federal agents grabbing protesters off the street and throwing them into rented minivans, he felt compelled to act.

Mr. David, a Navy veteran, said that federal agents’ use of violent tactics against protesters, without the support of the mayor, the governor or local law enforcement, was a violation of the oaths that agents take to support, uphold and defend the Constitution.

And so, on Saturday, he took a bus downtown to ask the officers how they squared their actions with that oath.

Instead of getting an answer, Mr. David was beaten with a baton by one federal officer as another doused him with pepper spray, according to video footage of the encounter. After he walked away from the confrontation, Mr. David was taken to a nearby hospital, where a specialist said his right hand was broken and would require surgery to install pins, screws and plates. He declined pain medication.

“I wasn’t even paying attention to the protests at all until the feds came in,” Mr. David said in an interview on Sunday night. “That’s when I became aware.”

Protesters have been in the streets of Portland for more than 50 consecutive days, in response to the killing of George Floyd by the police in Minneapolis. The arrival of federal officers in the city has re-energized the demonstrations, which continued on Sunday night, with tear gas once again deployed by U.S. agents.

Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, the acting deputy secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, said on CNN that he was “familiar with the video” involving Mr. David and that “maintaining an appropriate response is an ongoing obligation.”

Mr. David, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a former varsity wrestler who has lived in Portland since 2006, said he had attended only one protest before — a march for women’s rights in Washington, D.C., in 1989. As a 53-year-old man with health concerns, he said that the risk of the coronavirus was reason enough to stay away from downtown Portland.

“It just didn’t seem worth it to me at that point, but it reached that threshold when I saw Pinochet-type behavior from our own government,” he said, referring to the Chilean dictator.

With his mind made up, Mr. David grabbed a backpack with some essential items — migraine medicine, nicotine gum, his wallet and ID cards — and took a bus downtown, arriving near the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse about 8:15 p.m.

The courthouse has become a focus of protesters, as well as the federal Homeland Security agents who have been dispatched to protect it. But the response by those agents in Portland has prompted a backlash over whether the officers are exceeding their arrest authority and violating the rights of protesters by detaining demonstrators in the area around the federal courthouse.

On Mr. David’s backpack were patches commemorating his time as an officer in the Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps, serving with the construction battalions — the famed Seabees.

He also wore a heather gray sweatshirt with the word “Navy” emblazoned in blue across the top and a ball cap for the Academy’s wrestling team. He wanted the officers to know by sight that he was a veteran, and someone they could talk to.

“I identified the hell out of myself for a reason, I want to give them pause so we could talk,” he said. “So I wanted to go down there to tell them that I believed they were not following their oath to the Constitution. That was my goal.”

By 10:45 p.m., Mr. David was just about to leave to return home, he said, when some protesters began removing fencing around the courthouse and federal officers emerged. He made his way to a clutch of federal agents.

A video shot by Zane Sparling, a reporter with The Portland Tribune, captured what happened next. Officers in camouflage and gas masks beat Mr. David with batons and blasted pepper spray at his face. The shaky cellphone video shows him briefly shoving away the hand of the officer with the spray-can before turning around, walking away and defiantly throwing up the middle fingers of both hands. He turned and faced the officers again, raising his middle fingers even higher — though a strike from a baton had just shattered his dominant right hand.

Internet users quickly called him “Captain Portland” for barely flinching at the blows. Noting how at 6 feet 2 inches tall he towered over the officers, some people compared him to the “Game of Thrones” character known as the Mountain. On Twitter, he went from having a handful of followers before the encounter to more than 60,000 on Monday.

“My life has turned pretty dramatically weird,” he said.

That’s the story from the nytimes anyway.   But,  in my opinion, Lt. Sparkle Pony is getting just what he wanted… a short burst of fame.   Since everyone wants to title him as a Navy Veteran I took the opportunity to check his basic service.

It seems he did indeed serve in the Navy and attended the Naval Academy.  Lt.  David knew exactly what he was doing and planned to make a spectacle of himself.  He slathered himself up with Veteran patches with sole purpose of getting himself confronted by officers.  Where has Lt David been while all the victims of these “Protests” have been injured and killed?  Christopher David did not have the courage to stand up against the murder and attacks on innocent people by these mobs.

No,  Christopher David walked up to a group of Officers trying to put an end to this nonsense and then has the temerity to act as if he is standing up to some kind of tyranny.

The tyranny has been coming from the “Left” Christopher.   Enjoy your few minutes of fame.

Leftist Insurgents: We gonna overthrow the current system by force and take the wealth of its citizens. Violence and destruction are necessary!

Also leftist Insurgents: Help! Help! the government is using force to end my terrorism!

In addition, no way this guy was not following and or participating in the riots.

His comfort level to just walk in and right up to the officers was evident. He’s done this before.

He was there to become a martyr.

Also, the video does not support his “conversation” and “asking questions” claim IMPO.

The real question I have for him is this; “if you were in the Navy and understand chain of command, why are you asking the deck hands about the decisions of the Captain?”

I know the answer…he is already aware that the rioters are in open rebellion against the people of the USA and wants to be a hero of the revolution.

11B-Mailclerk

You were not supposed to point that out. Doesn’t fit the narrative.

“Insurrection”. This is what it now is. They can play pattyIcake with terms, but that is what this is.

And they are now claiming they can fire on federal property if the feds don’t surrender.

And what do we call officers who go over to the insurrectionists? Hm?

Oops. Not the fame you wanted? Tsk.

I thought he was a dope-on-a-rope when that news story appeared. I had my doubts about his claim of service, until that Academy photo appeared, so then I wondered how he managed to stay on AD at all if he’s the dumbfounding dork he seems to be.

Pompous ass flows out of him.

MI Ranger

Ex-PH2,
Because he was in the Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps. If they are anything like the Army Corps of Engineers they are about as far removed from UCMJ and Chain of Command as can be and still in the military.

This guy sounds like the kid that wore a Chez Guevara T-Shirt under his dress uniform to graduation and then posted a picture showing it online.
He thinks they were violating their Oath to the Constitution when it was actually the other way around…no wonder he quit!

Wonder what he has been doing with himself since he quit the service? Does not sound/look like he has been all that successful! At 53, he likely graduated the Service Academy in 1990, putting his eight years of AD at 1998, so pre-9/11. So no PTSD, just aggravated injuries from wrestling. 22 years as a civilian life and all he has to show is some old Navy sweatshirt, cut off camo pants, and riding the bus (though maybe that was choice so when he got arrested he wouldn’t have to retrieve a car). Makes me glad I stayed in and retired.

Well described.

6 foot 2 is hardly “towering”. And dude knew exactly what he was getting into.

Memo to noob protestors: when popo says, “Disperse,” that’s not the time to go up and ask stupid fucking questions.

Andy11M

So the active duty start date of 1988, that would be when he entered the Naval Academy? 4 years, graduate in 1992, then 6 year commitment, and out in 1998?

NHSparky

Not likely. Plebe summer starts in July. May is more consistent with graduation date.

10 years and rocketed to LT. I mean yeah, the Seabees is a small community, but it’s not a wait until someone dies to get promoted field.

MarineDad61

NHSparky,
Will we ever know WHY this O-3 approaching 10 years got out,
instead of sticking around for O-4,
a sizeable pay jump?
Hated the Navy?
Non-promotable?
Seems like a wasted USNA slot, courtesy of the US taxpayer,

MarineDad61:

In the 1990s, the Active Army was downsizing.

Officers, to include Regular Army, were offered $$$ to get out.

Some got the Pink Slip. We are talking about Majors/O4s who already did 15 years.

Personally knew of a couple of West Point Graduates who were Regular Army and were passed over for promotion from CPT to MAJ/O3-O4. Some went into the Army Reserves to ensure they would get their 20 years/retirement pay.

Others just simply left the Army for good.

Also knew a couple of OCS graduates who were passed over. They reverted to their Enlisted Rank, finished their 20 years and were able to draw Officer Retirement pay.

It was pretty brutal in the 1990s and ironically, in some Specialities, the Army was hurting after 9-11 to bring Soldiers back on Active Duty for deployment to the Sandbox during the early stages of OEF/OIF.

Am speculating that is what happened with the Navy.

Hope this gives a different perspective on your comment “Seems like a wasted USNA slot, courtesy of the US taxpayer,
proven 20 years later”, because if you think about it, that same thought process could apply to ROTC Scholarship Soldiers, Direct Commissioning, etc. etc.

Ah, the 1990s… deploying “100 nations around the world” with half the budget we had before. Oh, and Black Hawk Down type sh*t…

NHSparky

Didn’t just hit the officer ranks. In my NEC, about 200 of us were board eligible for CPO in mid to late-90’s.

I went up for CPO 3 times. The number selected those years was 15, 12, then 8. I saw some truly outstanding guys who never got picked up, and a lot of us just said fuck it and got out.

We can file this under “Attitude Adjustment” and thus allows Mr. David to “reboot.”

He is speaking about his self-described pure motives and it may in fact be the case, but when you inject yourself into a highly volatile situation all sorts of things may go askew and not necessarily in your favor.

Most of the left have ZERO courage.

As proof of this – look at the things they attack: President Trump, the police, Christians, the military, and statues.

What do these things all have in common? They don’t fight back and have no anti-defamation organizations.

They feel courageous “fighting” against an “enemy” that they know can’t or won’t fight back. Their battles are primarily symbolic.

Commissar

Bullshit. Damn near the entire political narrative of the right is about fear.

Fear works on conservatives. It activates them politically. And that has been well known for centuries.

The entire premise of conservatism is fear of others. Fear and mistrust of human nature.

Hondo

The entire premise of conservatism is fear of others.

Says the individual from UCB – that “bastion of freedom and tolerance” where both the administration and the student body apparently fears Conservative thought so much they effectively won’t allow Conservative speakers on campus, and ostracize anyone who espouses conservative principles.

Project much, Commissar?

Daisy Cutter

Commissar, you posted: “Bullshit. Damn near the entire political narrative of the right is about fear.”

But then go on to another point without substantiating your bullshit remark.

We look at the same glass, but see it differently. In my view – the right looks at things based on what has worked in the past through trial and error. The left looks at things the way it should and ought to be. While there is value in optimistic thinking – i.e. if everyone freely gave up their guns, there would be no gun violence – it is not grounded in reality.

Idealism vs. reality. This will always be a battle ground. The key is to strike a balance. May never happen since mankind it inherently corrupt.

World peace, the end of world hunger, no more wars, no more crime, a chicken in every pot (sucks for the chicken says PITA), everyone earns a decent wage, etc.

These are all worthy goals. Nobody would argue that. The juice is not worth the squeeze if you abandon reality to achieve them.

So, we look at the same glass – what you see as fear, some see as realistic, tempering caution.

Examples graciously provided upon request.

Hondo

Yep. A Conservative’s first impulse is generally to leave a working system alone. Outside an existential crisis, the most you’ll generally see are minor changes to increase efficiency, introduced slowly and observed for a while to ensure that they aren’t counterproductive.

In contrast, the Left appears to operate on the principle that, “Give us total control and we can create Utopia. So what if the last 20 tries didn’t work, or if what we must do conflicts with human nature – we’ll get it right this time. Those other 20 failed attempts were made by those who simply weren’t good enough to make it work. But we are.”

Historically, the Conservative mindset produces a society that typically changes slowly over time – but which functions, generally quite well, and when implemented by a representative democracy typically allows a large degree of individual freedom. In contrast, all societies governed by the extreme Left that I am aware of have universally degenerated into authoritarian dictatorships with zero respect for human rights or lives.

SFC D

Fear? I fear that your antifa comrades-in-arms will eventually push things too far and get the epic ass whooping they’ve been begging for. I fear that some dumbass like this Lt. is going to stroll up to a group of LEO’s and inflict serious harm in order to be a “martyr”. I fear for the people of Portland who now have to deal with nightly “protests” and riots. I fear that your people will not stop with your socialist/communist agitating and you will truly get the war that you seem to want. Yours is not a noble cause.

USMC Steve

Not really. But we have the intelligence and ability to see a valid and looming threat, and unlike the left, the stones to go kinetic if necessary to eliminate that threat. Kind of like the events currently transpiring. If you and your socialist dem minions were not running around destroying the blue states, there would be very little need to be concerned about their lack of civilization.

Poetrooper

It has long been my experience that when someone starts off any comment with “Bullshit” then that’s usually what follows in their commentary. The extant example certainly supports that contention.

Approaching Federal cops at around 2300L mid-riot to call a time-out to discuss Jeffersonian political ideals? Don’t know if he did his obligation plus a couple and went home, or was HYT’ed for getting passed over for LCDR. If this is an example of his head work, I know how I would bet.

LC

Approaching Federal cops at around 2300L mid-riot to call a time-out to discuss Jeffersonian political ideals?

While I also question whether this was the best course of action, if we take his intent at face value, I commend him on his principles. He wasn’t violent, and while I’m certainly no constitutional lawyer, I have to think that people being thrown into unmarked cars, without being read any rights, by federal law enforcement officials who’ve been asked not to do this by state-level authorities does raise a few constitutional questions.

And at the end of the day, what’s worse? Sometimes, when talk of ‘taking guns’, seen as unconstitutional, comes up on this site, people talk tough about how the police can take them from their cold, dead fingers. You know, talking about killing fellow Americans from law enforcement because of constitutional issues. This guy tried to have a conversation, and got his ass beat, over what he sees as constitutional issues. I can think his approach wasn’t the wisest, but I respect the restraint immensely and the beating surely wasn’t necessary.

Hondo

Whether state/local authorities had requested Federal LE to “not get involved” is immaterial. Federal LEOs don’t answer to state/local authorities.

The article above clearly states that the protest/riot was in the immediate vicinity of the Federal Court House complex in Portland. Federal LE have jurisdiction to control access to, and prevent damage to, Federal facilities. They appear to have been operating well within the scope of their Federal LE authority in directing protesters/rioters approaching a Federal facility to disperse.

As AW1Ed noted above: the middle of a riot is not the time to approach a LEO engaging in riot control or facility protection activities for a discussion concerning politics.

LC

So I take it staunch conservatives would have zero problems with FBI, DHS and Federal Marshals coming into states to enforce a Presidential executive order on AR-15s, right?

There’s a difference between “don’t answer to” and “should”. And I’d think those who typically argue states’s rights and minimal federal government over federal power would side more with the states here.

I’m also not sure how beating a guy with a baton who wasn’t aggressive and certainly wasn’t doing any damage to a federal facility means they were operating well within their scope of protecting such facilities.

Cowpill

A Presidential order is not on the same level as a right granted to us by GOD and the Constitution! These rioters are actively and openly breaking FEDERAL LAW! Theses are not peaceful protest and if some schmuck comes up to me while I am being assaulted from multiple directions you can bet you ass I am going to give them a reason to go else where

LC

That’s why I specified AR-15s. There’s a right to bear arms, absolutely, but it’s not clear that the government can’t say, “You can have a handgun, but not an AR-15.” After all, there are plenty of ‘arms’ you can’t own.

And yes, some of the protestors are breaking the law, even if most are peaceful. But there are serious questions about the reach of the federal forces. Protecting courthouses is fine. Arresting people, it’s said, is not.

11B-Mailclerk

Arresting people for trying to burn a Federal Courthouse is in-scope for Federal LEOs.

So is conspiracy-to, and a host of related offenses.

Look it up.

There is no way you can slice this to make the rioters the “good guys” or immunize them from Federal prosecution. Your fellow Democrats tried that after they lost the argument over Civil Rights for all Americans, and Federal law enforcement crushed the freelance lynchers and organized Klan mob action.

Aiding rioters is being a rioter. This includes trying to stop LEOs enforcing ” don’t burrn/burgle a Federal Courthouse”.

The prohibition on arson/burglary of the judiciary is non-controversial and inoffensive to the Constitution.

You might -want- Fort Sumter cleared of Federal presence, but doesn’t make your position correct.

USMC Steve

Your states rights argument will not even wash. The state and city governments of the blue states have abrogated their responsibility as well as their duty. They uniformly refuse to do their jobs, thus there is really no government there. And you frankly have no idea what exactly this turd was up to before or during or after. All you got to work with is the work of leftard mass propaganda media who very obviously slanted their “stories” from the git go.

Hondo

Obvious strawman argument, LC. Federal LE protecting Federal facilities – and what happens when some knucklehead ignores their directives – is the issue here. Please try to stay on topic.

If you doubt that, perhaps you should try the same tactic this guy did at morning rush hour at the entrance to a military installation or some other Federal facility with entrance security (like, oh, a Federal court house). Simply try to gain pedestrian access without showing the requisite credentials or complying with normal entry procedures – and then tell the LEO there that he/she is violating your Constitutional rights when you get told to leave pronto.

I wouldn’t recommend getting verbally abusive or belligerent, though – or refusing to comply with instructions for too long, either. Batons reportedly hurt, and cuffs reportedly get uncomfortable after a while.

Combat Historian

That’s the biggest, lamest, dumbest strawman LC has propped up in a while. I expected a better argument from someone of LC’s intellect…

Poetrooper

LC’s intellect and arguments too frequently take a back seat to his propensity to be merely argumentative…

LC

Per above, I readily admit that’s the case – especially on topics I’m unsure on. I don’t know of a better way to understand something than to argue different sides of it, and see what makes sense.

LC

Whatever intelligence I have has good days and bad days – and, more to the point, things I know a lot about, and things I don’t. This is definitely the latter, but sometimes arguing things, per Poe’s note below, is how we learn.

I don’t think it’s as lame a strawman as you do, given that it does seem a constitutional issue per people with far more law knowledge than myself, but I guess we can just disagree about that.

LC

I don’t see it as an obvious straw man, Hondo. Yes, federal LE protecting federal facilities is fine – but was he threatening those facilities? Did he ‘rush’ them? Protestors have been outside military facilities in the past; if the MPs go out and gas/beat them, outside the base, I’m betting there’d be hell to pay.

More to the point, Oregon’s AG has said that federal law enforcement has gone outside their mandate and has been unlawfully detaining people on the streets. Now, I’m certainly not a lawyer, and my knowledge of the law is limited, but Judge Nap has a bit of experience there and has said that’s unconstitutional:

https://www.foxnews.com/media/judge-napolitano-federal-agents-portland-constitution

Again, I don’t agree with Mr. David’s actions, but that doesn’t make the actions of the federal agents right. And more to my original point, federal agents acting without local coordination and exceeding their mandate seems like a wee bit of a constitutional issue. But again, don’t take my word on it, that’s what constitutional experts are saying (links if you want them).

11B-Mailclerk

The same AG who is -not- prosecuting rioters under state law?

Despite tens of millions in damage, business destroyed, and lives destroyed?

Seriously?

Democrats have this habit of declaring some folks lack rights, and it is OK for -mobs- to express that belief violently. Then they use local and state officials to protect the violent rioters and terrorists and squash further the victims.

Then, options exhausted, the Feds step in to enforce civil rights and end the mayhem.

Like the 50s and 60s, you may have read about?

1900 and 1800, both.

You want to talk about -rights-, How about folks -right- not to live under threat of a lynch mob burning them out of their business? Coming to their homes in the dead of night?

-again-

No “liberal” can support this ongoing mob rule. It -must- stop. It is anathema to Liberty and to our Constitution. I will not surrender to a mob. I will not surrender others to a mob.

Don’t go “copperhead”.

timactual

I am sure that, as St. James (Comey) would say, no reasonable person can fault the federal agents because they did not have the intent to violate anyone’s rights.

ArmyATC

Apples and oranges much? There’s clearly a huge difference between confronting federal LEOs protecting federal property and a government trying to steal our rights. I would think someone as smart as you would be able to see that. The only way your comparison even remotely works is if one believes the entire federal government is illegitimate and needs to be overthrown. Is that what you’re trying to tell us?

I can’t help but think that guy “took one for the team,” knowing the feds would go after him. Look at his stance. Is that how one stands who is simply trying to have a conversation? And as for his supposedly “shattered right hand,” having had a broken hand a few times I don’t see it. This clown was simply playing the martyr.

Hondo

I have a hard time with that “shattered hand” claim too, ArmyATC.

The only way that guy’s hand was broken during the incident is if he was so high on some kind of recreational chemical that he couldn’t feel much of anything. It’s pretty hard for someone who isn’t thoroughly wasted to ignore broken bones – and to use that same hand seconds later to give someone the finger (see the video clip link posted by ninja elsewhere in comments).

Then again, he seems pretty non-reactive and oblivious during the video. So maybe he was that high at the time.

LC

Well, that’s why I specifically said taking AR-15s. If the government went in to take all your guns, that’s a clear violation of the constitution. If it went in to take some kind of guns, it’s less clear. After all, as I mentioned above, you’re forbidden from owning all kinds of ‘arms’, so why can’t the government say AR-15s now fall into that category?

The point being it’s a murky area of constitutionality, much like this situation. Federal agents are clearly operating within their scope when they’re protecting federal facilities.. but if they go out into the public, and proactively arrest protestors without probably cause, under the umbrella of ‘protecting federal property’, is that constitutional? And when conservatives like Judge Napolitano and academic scholars in constitutional law say that’s a problem, I’m inclined to think maybe it’s worth considering as an issue..

11B-Mailclerk

Federal LEOs protect Federal property and enforce Federal laws. Last time I checked “don’t burn down Federal courthouses” was non-controversial and non-offensive to the Constitution.

Or are you actually in favor of the firing on Fort Sumter? Because this is the equivalent of what is happening in this case.

“They won’t go! Force them out!”

I assure you, the Federal Government has -plenty- of authority to suppress insurrection. Trump is amazingly restrained, as the threshold to use Federal troops to suppress insurrection was crossed months ago.

When you try to drive out the government violently, it is called “Insurrection”.

If the damnfool rioters and insurrectionists had a penny worth of sense, they would totally avoid Federal officers and property, like it was radioactive. Like ” don’t even litter near those”.

But their objective is “violent overthrow” so of course they slap that Tar Baby.

Dumbasses.

Totally -stupid- botch of Revolution 101.

Absolutely brain-dead stupid lack of strategic thinking.

Any slight trace of foreign involvement in the rioting orgs, like say having “international” on your org web site, and the Laws and Customs of War become the controlling governance, because -then- it is a War by law. That foreign nexus opens a vast abyss of unpleasantness.

And as non-uniformed combatants who hide behind civilians, attack civilian targets, and otherwise violate the Laws and Customs of War, they are -not- being mistreated.

“Unlawful Enemy Combatant” has consequences.

If you failed to add up what is going on, that is on you.

The dumbasses handed all that to their opponents, gift wrapped on a silver platter.

Totally stupid mistake. It will be costing them dearly.

LC

Federal LEOs protect Federal property and enforce Federal laws. Last time I checked “don’t burn down Federal courthouses” was non-controversial and non-offensive to the Constitution.

I’ve got zero problem with federal LEOs protecting federal property. I think it gets a bit murkier when they’re ‘proactively’ arresting people without probably cause under that mission directive, and without cooperation with local LEOs. You’re drawing a false comparison, much like as if I said, “Oh, you’re against the rights of people to peacefully assemble?!”, while ignoring the people who aren’t taking the ‘peaceful’ part to heart.

People can peacefully protest. They can’t burn, pillage and commit crimes. Federal LEOs can protect federal property. They can’t arrest people without cause and attack people without provocation. See? Everyone has limits on their behavior. It’s not hard to understand.

11B-Mailclerk

You are grasping at straws, based on the propaganda of the riot-mavens.

They are acting lawfully. Actually, they are acting with great restraint.

One darn good reason to arrest the suspects later at a distance, it to deny the mob the ability to pack-attack and “de-arrest- rioters.

Thus also preventing injury to LEOs and rioters.

Dude, they could -shoot- the rioters who are using Molotovs and explosive fireworks. Or hammers and clubs. All are “deadly force”.

They could put riflemen to work, legally, and end this rioting insurrectionist nonsense in an evening.

But they don’t. Hm.

Ever been caught in a riot? I have. If you are defending those who support and enable rioters, you are definitely standing on moral quicksand.

timactual

How do you know the feds are acting “proactively” and that they have no probable cause? One 30 second video? Because the rioters say so?

timactual

The police were obviously trying to clear the area. He was obstructing them. How else should they have gotten him to clear the area? Bribery, perhaps? Once he decided to move the police immediately backed off.

26Limabeans

How about if he wore a suicide vest and took
the agents with him?
You live in cozy world LC. You need get out more often.
Maybe join a riot and see if you can have a conversation.
Put a giant peace symbol on your chest.

LC

Come on… that line of thought leads to madness. Should cops, stopping people for running stop signs, flashbang cars before they approach to ask for a license and registration in case the occupants are wearing suicide vests?

I don’t live in a cozy world, I live in the real one where you have to balance the needs of a generally peaceful society -yes, even during a riot- with uncommon threats. And the answer isn’t to treat everyone as a potential terrorist.

11B-Mailclerk

There is no right to riot.

There is no right to aid and abet a riot.

If you choose to engage LEOs during a riot, interfering with their performance of duty, congratulations, you are now part of the riot.

Don’t whine because they acknowledge your chosen activity.

There is no right to riot, or to aid and abet one.

None.

timactual

In an area where a riot is taking place, and has been for a month or more, it is perfectly reasonable to treat anyone in the area, particularly if they are dressed like the rioters, to treat those folks as potential rioters.

USMC Steve

No, what he did was both stupid and dangerous. If he could look at what he was trying to do as being constructive, in the context of what was going on around him, he is either terminally stupid or utterly delusional. Good initiative, perhaps. Bad judgement, unquestionably. I suspect he was just another provocateur. as for the beatdown, totally fine with that. Given what they are dealing with in a riot situation, while trying to disperse unruly and violent large children, they should thump ANYONE other than other popo coming up to them. This dude was a tool plain and simple. A tool with an agenda.

penguinman000

LC-It’s my understand that his “conversation” with police occurred after an unlawful assembly had been declared. That means conversation time is over.

And there is no obligation/responsibility/duty to advise an arrestee of their rights unless you intend to question them. That’s TV trope nonsense.

Mason

Judging by the urban camp fires in the background, this was not a coffee with a cop event.

Anonymous

Left/libtard “have a conversation” means “Do it my way, ignorant f*ckin’ peon!” in plain English and the cop wasn’t having any of that sh*t.

LC

Thanks for the clarification – I hadn’t heard about the unlawful assembly declaration, and should look into that. My primary issue isn’t this guy, though, it’s more a question of the behavior and reach of the federal LEOs. Per above, I’m also not entirely sure how I feel about it. I support the protection of federal facilities, and would support the protection of local ones if there was coordination with local LEOs, but I think taking special units for drug interdiction and putting them in riot control against civilians is not exactly a recipe for good things, and likely lead to unnecessary violence on their part.

Nothing against the agents; that’s their training. But probably not the best course of action.

penguinman000

LC-These protests are wide spread and enough of them are turning into riots agencies are stretched thin. Agencies are being left with no option but to start putting anyone with a badge and arrest authority in gear.

From what I can tell on the video, the strikes used were what was taught. And based off the amount of time he was in front of the officers its probable he was ordered to get back. He failed to comply. Ask, tell, make.

11B-Mailclerk

Absent the Federal protecting the courthouse, there would now not be a Federal Courthouse.

How do we “petition for redress of grievances” if mobs burn down the courts?

You cannot keep your eyes shut to what is at stake. Organized mobs have declared that they will -end- our Free society. They bash/burn/loot whomever they believe opposes them. This has nothing to do with lives, and everything to do with “overthrow”.

Again.

timactual

LOL.
You think maybe temp agencies have trained riot control police on call? Maybe a warehouse full of Robocops just waiting to be activated?

Hack Stone

You know, the local authorities in Little Rock Arkansas back in 1957 also did not want federal law enforcement/ troops interfering with local issues.

Hondo

The timing of his leaving active duty seems about right for an officer who resigned after being a first-time nonselect for O4 and who didn’t want to stick around and become a 2x nonselect, AW1Ed. But that’s based on my recollection of Active Army norms for promotion to O4 during that time frame (promotion board somewhere around 9 to 10 years, results approved by the Senate some weeks/months later, and usually several months waiting time after approval of the list before promotion).

One of our Navy types with the relevant background/knowledge would have to confirm or correct that, though, since services can vary substantially in typical promotion timelines.

Penguinman000

I was enlisted scum but did a tour with Seabees (can do when they want to). The time frame for officer promotion you are talking about seems close to correct.

However, the Navy has a love/hate relationship with all things Seabee. So they are constantly expanding/contracting the career field for both zeros and scum. He very well could’ve been caught in one of those manning cycles that halted his forward progression.

For the most part I’ve found political beliefs and associations from the military tend to change in a few years after people leave the service. Folks tend to start reflecting the tribe they end up with after service. I’ve had a few curve balls thrown my way when catching up with old shipmates. And I’m still less than 10 years after retirement.

And this fool? “Identify myself as a Veteran…” Hell anybody can go get a sweatshirt/coat whatever with Navy and patches, as if an officer in a stressful situation is gonna pay any attention to the writing on the clothing…in the dark.

Old boy named S.M. Stirling wrote a series of “What if…” doomsday type books starting in ’04. The FIRST in the series was called “Dies the Fire” and is centered around Portland. What we are seeing there now is very much how Portland went when the grid went down.

penguinman000

That series was actually pretty good.

Twist

I loved that series as well as his Nantucket trilogy. After the Change series, What 5th is talking about, the series continues with what happened after the initial trilogy. It was pretty good up until the point where the main character (Rudy) die. At that point Stirling was more interested in describing mundane items such as button than he was about telling the story.

timactual

That seems to happen to a lot of authors who write a series. Some of them just give up after two or three books, and some drive them into the dirt.

I spent twenty minutes in Portland after DEROS from the Viet of the Nam.
DC-8 outta SeaTac with only me and another military guy on board.

Portland used to be a beautiful city until the progs and the commie psychos turned it into a shithole like LA.

Commissar

Concerned for what he sees on TV, he goes to a protest, he walks up to officers and asks what they are doing and if they think they are defending the constitution….

He gets beat with a baton, breaking his hand, and OC sprayed in the face point blank.

And you all think he did it for fame.

He had no reason to believe any of what he was doing was going to go anywhere. Thousands of protests take thousands of action at every given moment in dozens of protests around the country.

Very few images or actions ever resonate. Almost nobody gets 15 minutes of fame. Because that is not what they are there for.

And it is so unlikely to happen it is ridiculous to try to spin their actions as fame seeking.

He was justifiably concerned about federal law enforcement acting far outside their juridiscitiona, authority and abducting citizens with no probable cause for any crimes merely to intimidate them and catalog their identity.

If this was happening for legitimate law enforcement purposes they would identify their agencies. They would be charging nearly all of those they arrest. They would be citing those they release.

And those released would know what agencies had detained them.

This is political theater and market tests for authoritarianism to see if it appeals to right wing voters.

I don’t think he did it for fame (although the video is conveniently well framed and he came out as quickly as the next day to ID himself). I think he did it because he’s a fucking idiot.

Passive participation in a violent riot and insurrection is still participation. You damn well know that in a riotous environment is not the time to expect to have a conversation on the issues of the day.

He stupidity was buying into the narrative that we live in a free country and that law enforcement would respect people’s constitutional rights if they were just gently asked to do so.

That was fucking stupid,

He should have known that 40% of our nation openly and enthusiastically supports our shift towards authoritarianism. Another 30% can’t be bothered to give a shit.

USMC Steve

And 89.2 percent really doesn’t care what a communist like you thinks about things, given that reality does not affect your decision making processes.

As they say in France: Le Waaaaaa!!

SFC D

Kindly point out the portion of the constitution that guarantees the right to nightly riots. Nope, the part about peaceful assembly doesn’t cover riots. No, pillaging and burning are not free speech. If you take part in a riot, in any fashion, however small, you are a common criminal and will be treated as such. These are your people, Commissar. They are your fellow travelers. There is no defending their actions. Shifting the blame to others is a lie and you know it.

Fyrfighter

Actually, since their intent is violent overthrow of the government, they’re beyond “common criminal” and right on to seditious terrorist… and it might be you that pointed out that when the groups involved claim “international”, and accept support from foreign actors, they become unlawful enemy combatants, subject to treatment as such…

Poetrooper

Ol’ Poe’s a far cry from being a prude, but I do find it remarkable that a man who purports to hold advanced degrees and pretends to intellectual superiority, so liberally salts his already weak arguments with profanity.

In particular I find his propensity to use the word shit so frequently to be troubling. Again, eight decades of observance of human behavior has shown me that such frequent usage of that scatological term tends to be a mostly feminine trait in our culture.

Concern for what is seen on television?

OK – then stay the F away and make your concerns known at the ballot box.

Federal Law Enforcement acting far outside their authority?

Actually no – well within their authority. They are from the various components of the federal governments law enforcement arms. US Marshals Service, Various DHS components to include Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Protective Service. These are specialized units from those agencies trained in crowd and riot control.

All have the requisite federal authority to enforce federal law and all are deputized as Special Deputy US Marshals. US Marshals may exercise the same powers which a sheriff of the State may exercise in executing the laws thereof under 28USC564.

These mobs in Portland are primarily comprised of privileged white assholes who have probably never contributed a cent to society in the form of property or income taxes, yet the seek to tear that society down.

There’s a difference between an arrest and a detention, law enforcement has every right under the law to detain an individual for a limited purpose.

Arrests – How about Jacob Michael Gaines for assaulting a US Marshal with a hammer during the attempt to destroy the federal building? Gretchen Blanc for assault on a federal officer and interfering with an arrest? A number of others for assault using lasers and for failure to comply with lawful orders under the Code of Federal Regulations?

Stacy0311

IDK, supporting the constitution against all enemies foreign AND domestic. Ring any bells?
It’s part of the military oath and probably a lot of LEO oaths too.

So when organized groups (yeah, it’s not just a bunch of people spontaneously deciding to “peacefully protest”) who have clearly said they want to eradicate the police, economy and government as it currently exists. Sounds like a clear definition of a domestic enemy.

To you of course, that probably sounds like the faculty lounge at Berkeley.

If you go somewhere ‘to protest’, look left and right, if you see people throwing; rocks, Molotovs, fireworks, etc and the law starts telling you, by voice or action, that the assembly is no longer peaceful, you are now a rioter in a riot.
Riots do not have Constitutional protections.
I know, it sucks, right?
I didn’t and haven’t seen too many people gettin’ ‘muh rytes’ violated as of late. Oth, mayors, DA, Grand Juries, governors, and police chiefs have been complicit in the destruction of law and order, either by naive inaction, or direct subversion.

I’m a big civil society fan, heck, I look forward to Jury duty! But these actions by the insurrectionists are begging for the most base form of justice: the lynch mob.

The Dude walks away and is flipping birds from both hands.

What am I missing?

Hondo

After viewing that – and noting his apparent non-reaction to both getting hit multiple times with a police baton and getting pepper-sprayed in the face – I’m guessing there’s a damn good chance that substantial quantities of recreational chemicals may have been involved.

USMC Steve

Gotta agree. I have had several broken bones, and if his hand was busted, and he was not stoned, he would not have been doing anything with it other than to hold it in his good hand.

ninja

Hondo and USMC Steve:

THANK YOU.

👍👍

Ex-PH2

He claims the pohlease broke one of his hands, right? The video says otherwise.

Sounds strangely like attention-whoring to me.

Fyrfighter

Isn’t the claim that it was his right hand that was broken? The only one i see getting hit in that video is his LEFT hand… seems a bit strange to me..

26Limabeans

This will explain it:

USMC Steve

That’s how hard the guy hit him – smacked in right hand, so hard that it carried through and jolted the snot outta his left hand and busted it.

Christopher James David (FRPR*) 45 x 8 = 360 (About how many degrees he was off from sanity)

Hondo

Um, Claw . . . 360 degrees is a full circle.

If you’re “360 degrees off” . . . you’re dead on desired azimuth. (smile)

Green Thumb

Claw must have been Infantry.

11B-Mailclerk

-this- infantryman did land-nav/orienteering from age 6, and taught/re-taught a number of LTs and others how to use map and compass properly.

(LT losing our way for about 90 minutes all over Ft Irwin) “Well if you are so smart PFC, -you- show me where we are!”

Stops jeep. Gets out. Puts aside metal like rifle. Walks 10m. Takes bearing to Tiefort Mountain. Back-azimuth to tank trail. Shoots two more prominent terrain features and compares to map plot. Spot on. Walks back to jeep

(Points) “Here, sir. We need to go this way to there, then that way to where you want to be.”

(Say nothing more. Drive home uneventfully)

Anonymous

LT, surgically attached to cellphone and unable to make it give a 8-digit grid, makes pouty Facebook posts and sees Chaplain for “stress” when back.

11B-Mailclerk

The above was before cellphones and GPS were a significant thing.

You’d be really unimpressed with LTs now, trust me.

Green Thumb

Funny.

Green Thumb

I climbed the South Chute of Tiefort.

11B-Mailclerk

During our deployment, we were told, several times, it was hitting 125F in the shade.

(Unison) “What shade?”

timactual

I am sure it’s on back-order.

Green Thumb

No shit.

Ran black on water to boot. Sucked ass.

But I did get to see a Desert Tortoise. Thought about calling it in and shutting down training for the day. I would have been very popular with the rank and file, not so much with the BC.

11B-Mailclerk

I recall some warnings about “try not to squash any tortoises” and “don’t mess with scorpions or snakes”, but the main thing we were warned that could stop training was idiots driving off-road into training areas.

Or worse.

Staging under the “desert shades” (giant carports) waiting to ship home, there was a major commotion in the garrison area. Like “how many MPs and fire trucks do they freaking have? Wow!”

After much commotion, and a long period of quiet-but-flashing, there was an “earth shattering kaboom”.

Like “kick you in the ass through the ground ” kaboom.

Seems some civvy dickheads drove their off-road pickup around the training areas, then wandered into the garrison area, lost.

Then someone noticed the impressive collection of “souvenirs” rolling around loose in the truck bed.

Duds.

As we were later told:
Several cluster-bomblets.
Mac expended ordinance
And a live 155mm HE projectile.

They dug a pit and blew them in place, right there at the edge of the buit up part of the base, sort-of near us. And forgot to tell us (a whole brigade) that were camped nearby.

Whoops.

timactual

“Duds.”

Yep. the unexploded ordnance, too.

Green Thumb

The idiots were headed to Vegas.

About 45 min out of the “back” gate.

Can you blame them?

Irwin sucks.

Claw

Um, I knew that. Just wanted to see if it peaked anyone’s curiosity by not including the “in” to sanity./s

And Yeah, Thumb, I did have a few Infantry outfits under my belt as a Supply Weenie. Specifically, 3/7 IN at Benning, 1/15 IN at Harvey Bks, Kitzingen (during the same timeframe that Jonn was in 2/15 IN up on The Rock, and 1/12 IN at Carson.

Glad it bothers you so much, communist.

Commissar

Also, Trump names Oakland as one of the lawless cities run by democrats that can’t get the protestors under control…

Which I know for a fact is a blatant lie.

Oakland has been peaceful and quiet for a month. The protests long subsided.

I bring that up so you can check, you can go to YouTube and google “Oakland protests” and see that there are no videos less than a month old.

So when he tries to deploy feds to abduct people off the street in Oakland you all will know it is based on a god damn lie by an authoritarian piece of shit desperately grasping for an issue that will motivate his base again.

There will be protests in Oakland as a RESULT of him deploying feds, but HE will have triggered those protests and right wing media will use video of those protests to justify his decision to send federal police.

So he will create protests to justify his authoritarian tactics against protests.

All manufactured political theater. Perfomative authoritarianism.

And dipshits in the MAGA community will buy into all of it; because they love authoritarianism.

SFC D

So if you suddenly go off the net, it’ll be safe to assume the eebil federales have snatched your ass off the streets?

You shat all over yourself, and claim everyone else stinks.

You can’t even manage to defend your own positions, mainly because you try to obscure them. He

USMC Steve

Nah, Comrade, it is most likely because you are a socialist and fucked up as a football bat. And the one thing you are consistently is wrong. Given that you are a socialist communist type, you should be applauding what Trump is supposedly doing, since what you describe is precisely out of the socialist dictator handbook.

And you proved yourself to be lying because Oakland has not seen one single peaceful day in over 30 YEARS. It is a shithole.

Christopher J. David’s chase for his 15 minutes is sad to me. Very deceptive of what the left is doing to undermine the Fed’s work to bring law and order. How many of us remember Ole Phony Vietnam AWOL Marine Corps Dirtball Nathan Phillips and the Covington Catholic High School Student (Nicholas Sandmann) 2019 incident:

Seems as if Ole Christopher James David is taking Stolen Valor Nathan Phillips Playbook and using it….

Read what Christopher James David said. IMHO, that is NOT what I see in the video…or am I missing something….

Agree with Hondo’s assessment i.e. “substantial quantities of recreational chemicals may have been involved.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07/20/christopher-david-portland-protest-video/

“He was trying to keep his distance, he said, as a host of health problems have made him especially vulnerable amid a still-raging coronavirus pandemic.”

“Just as he was about to leave, David said, the federal officers emerged. They rushed a line of protesters nearby, knocking them to the ground. David walked toward a gap in the line, calling out to the officers.”

“An officer trained his weapon on David’s chest as several agents pushed him, sending David stumbling backward. But he regained his center and tried again. Another agent raised his baton and began to beat David, who stood unwavering with his arms at his sides. Then another officer unloaded a canister of chemical irritant spray into David’s face.”

“That was all he could handle, David said, he turned and walked away, flipping off the federal forces as he went.”

“Unable to see from the chemicals burning his eyes and blurring his vision, David said, he stumbled into a cloud of gas that made him cough and retch.”

“A the hospital, he said, he learned his right hand had been broken in two places.”

What is so sad about this is that the Liberal News Media and Liberal Left are painting him as a Hero, using his former Veteran status.

How little they have forgotten our Fallen Men and Women who gave their lives for our Country in Wars/Conflicts and Operations.

How little they have forgotten our Fallen Firefighters and Police Officers who sacrificed their lives on 9-11.

How little they have forgotten their Families, their love ones.

How little they forgotten our Wounded Warriors to include those Firefighters and Police Officers still dealing suffering.

Christopher James David should be ashamed of himself. As with Nathan Phillips, his 15 Minutes of Fame will backfire on him.

The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) signed on June 18, 1878, by President Rutherford B. Hayes which limits the powers of the federal government in the use of federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States.

USMC Steve

And it is only applicable to military personnel, not federal law enforcement. It can also be superceded totally by the Insurrection act of 1807, as amended several times. See First Marine Division in Los Angeles back in 1992 during the Rodney King loot and shoot.

What exactly is your point?

Hondo

USMC Steve appears to be absolutely correct. The Posse Comitatus Act specifically allows the use of Federal (or Federalized National Guard) forces in a LE role “in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress“. And both 10 USC 252 and 10 USC 253 – which as part of Federal law indeed qualify as an “Act of Congress” – appear to give the POTUS exactly that authority.

No request from the governor or legislature of the state involved appears to be required under 10 USC 252 and 10 USC 253. Those same statutes also appear to give the POTUS sole discretion in determining whether or not such conditions exist in a particular state or locality.

For specifics, see

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1385

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/252

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/253

There’s also historical precedent. Eisenhower ordered troops from the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock, Arkansas, when riots prevented the enforcement of a Federal court order to desegregate Little Rock schools. I’m reasonably certain that either 10 USC 252 or 10 USC 253 (most probably the latter) was used as legal justification for the deployment. And I’m also reasonably certain that neither Arkansas’ governor or legislature requested Federal assistance prior to the deployment.

https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2020/07/21/video-shows-uniformed-sailor-screaming-f-trump-and-angrily-confronting-protesters/

Sailor has been identified by officials as Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Launch/Recovery) 2nd Class Sarah J. Dudrey.

She also “deploys double middle fingers” just as Christopher James David.

She is assigned to the Naval Base Ventura County, California.

Sheesh.

5th/77th FA

Guess there will soon be an opening for a berth as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate. If a comment from earlier had not of shown that “Captain Portland” was estranged from his family, one would think this was his daughter. Maybe this is one he didn’t know he had. She does appear to have lost that loving feeling. That kinda behavior will put her in a danger zone. Her goose will be cooked. She needs to cool off. Some one get her some ice, man.

Why does Christopher James David and Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Sarah J. Dudrey remind me of this classic video (25 Seconds):
