USCGS Taney Name Change

| July 1, 2020

The USCGC Taney resides on Pier 5 along with the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse in the Inner Harbor. Additionally, the Taney participates in educational and overnight programs for all ages.

Taney’s keel was laid on May 1st, 1935 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard alongside her sister ships: Campbell, Duane, and Ingham. She was built to be 327 feet long with a beam of 41 feet, and originally displaced 2000 tons. Her original armament consisted of two 5”/51 caliber deck guns and two 6-pounder saluting guns. Taney was also originally equipped to carry a Grumman JF-2 “Duck” float plane. She has seen extensive service in both war and peace for over half a century, and is often referred to as “The Last Survivor of Pearl Harbor.”

USCGC Taney served with honor from before WWII through her DECOM in 1986. After over 50 years of service, she was donated to the City of Baltimore to serve as a memorial and museum. A fitting end.

Name Change Voted for National Historical Landmark: A Fresh Look at History

By Jeanne Morales Attorney

The USCGC Taney was a United States Coast Guard Cutter, now a National Historical Landmark. The Taney is notable as the last warship floating that fought in the attack on Pearl Harbor, although Taney was moored in nearby Honolulu Harbor, not Pearl Harbor itself.

Serving her country for 50 years, Taney saw action in both theaters of combat in World War II, serving as command ship at the Battle of OkinawaBattle of Okinawa, and as a fleet escort in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. She also served in the Vietnam War, taking part in Operation Market Time. Peacetime duties included the Taney patrolling the seas working in drug interdiction and fisheries protection.

She was decommissioned in 1986, and has since served as a museum ship in the Inner_Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland. She was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1988.

Unfortunately for the great ship and the crews that proudly sailed her, USCGC Taney was named after the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Roger B. Taney, who authored the 1857 Dred Scott decision. The Court in that case held that the U.S Constitution was not meant to include American citizenship for black people, regardless of whether they were enslaved or free, and so the rights and privileges that the Constitution confers upon American citizens could not apply to them.

After the Civil War, the 13th Amendment and 14th Amendments effectively overturned the Dred Scott decision.

Absurd. Totally asinine.

5th/77th FA

We are allowing a very small percentage of the population of this Country to erase the history. I’m of the same opinion as OWB…asinine!

Where is SFC Sledge now that we need him? Or FIRST SGT Albert C. Richardson?

OWB

Understandable that the Dems (primarily) are attempting to erase history since they are the ones responsible for most of our negative history.

Our history is our history. We can’t change it. What we can do is learn about and from it. Sure, we have warts. We also have good things going on, and always have. We need to know about all of it.

It’ really not all that difficult a concept to grasp.

When will ships be named after “LGBTQ pioneers”? You know it’s gonna happen sooner than later.

STSC(SW/SS)

There is a ship named after Harvey Milk so it has already happened.

Comm Center Rat

YGTBSM! I didn’t know its already happened.

I always preferred ship names like Enterprise, Endeavor, Intrepid, Victory, etc.

Hack Stone

The named a Navy ship after Gabrielle Giffords because… Well, other than being shot, Hack has no idea what she did to merit having a ship named after her. If all it takes is to be shot by a lunatic to get a ship named after you, where is the USS Scalise?

FuzeVT

Right on!

Mason

Her husband was in the Navy. Gonna have to name a lot of ships after strippers too if that’s all it takes.

Hack Stone

SFC D

Gabby Giffords was the AZ representative for my district. She actually put her district first over party. Most local republicans respected her, a few of us even liked her. Her douchebag husband, not so much.

USMC Steve

So she had you all fooled then?

SFC D

Actually, no. She looked after her district and didn’t act like a typical liberal democrat. I hate to say it, but she did a hell of a lot better job than McSally did.

Buckeye Jim

Still no reason to have a ship named after her. Many real heroes in the Navy’s past to be honored.

SFC D

Agreed. She also doesn’t deserve to be denigrated for a liberal shithead naming ships after questionable people.

Wireman611

I am wondering if we are in the “Crazy Years” of Heinlein or the prelude to the world of Orwell’s “1984”. Either way this insanity must stop. When are the adults in the room going to stand up and spank the unruly children?

Anonymous

Heck, I want the co-ed showers from Starship Troopers (though it’s not in the book) at least… if men and women are truly interchangeable like liberals say, it shouldn’t be a problem.

11B-Mailclerk

Other than some snippets of similar dialog, “Bug Hunt: the Movie” had nothing to do with Heinlein’s book “Starship Troopers”.

Granted, he left out some of the more earthy aspects of Infantry. As the book was written for teenagers in 1959, this was understandable.

Bug Hunt was a shitty movie.

Ex-PH2

Oh, golly, who was it said “If you forget history, you’re doomed to repeat it?”

I think we definitely need to cancel and outlaw one institution, for sure. I mean, it is associated with slavery from its earliest days, is associated with the Civil War (bad enough, but also the icky side – the redneck side), was associated with racists politicians who perpetuated ACTUAL institutional racism, was associated with the KKK, is associated with the majority of statues being pulled down and flags being cancelled and basically has made black Americans miserable for 192 years.

I mean, if we’re cancelling President Grant and the 54th Massachusetts because of old gross Civil War guys, surely we must get rid of this vile institution. Right?

[Sarc/off]
Now, I’m sure everyone knows I refer to the ever so righteous (I guess there was still some sarcasm left) Democratic Party. I wonder seriously how they have gotten a pass from the Antifa types. I know that the Dem party is their current vessel for getting political stuff done, but these are dis-integrationists we are talking about. These people want to burn down the whole system and it won’t start with a party that was the architect of almost everything they bitch about?

The communist infiltrators of our public schools and higher education have done a bang up job of brain washing generations of people. It is truly a breathtakingly amazing the job they must have done to make cognitive dissonance such a easy thing to live with.

Deckie

They always said they’d hit us in our education system.

And they truly meant it.

Mason

Really want to get your blood boiling? Read this “fact check”. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/06/30/fact-check-democratic-party-did-not-found-kkk-start-civil-war/3253803001/

Get about six paragraphs in and there’s this gem:

Historians agree that although factions of the Democratic Party did majorly contribute to the Civil War’s start and KKK’s founding, it is inaccurate to say the party is responsible for either.

So while they did do it, they also didn’t do it. Biggest sign there’s still institutional racism in the Democratic party? Who is the governor of Virginia? Why is the DNC putting up an OPENLY racist person as their presidential candidate?

David

Weasel wording as always. Like the article that says Biden’s great-grandfather didn’t fight for the South in the Civil War – for proof they trace the bloodline of one great-grandfather, and ignore the other seven. “We have no information to support” means “we know about it but we have intentionally not officially acknowledged it so we can deny it”. If you carefully read many of the denials, they are very, very specifically phrased to tell an extremely thin slice of the truth. Like one bristle of a very broad brush. Remember the State Department and their “we can’t find Hillary’s mails”? How many have showed up since then?

Hack Stone

Remember the State Department and their “we can’t find Hillary’s mails”?

You can’t find them if you don’t look for them.

FuzeVT

And I guess all the turn of the century Democrats who put up all of those Confederate Lost-Cause monuments weren’t Democrats, either.

I’m surprised they haven’t had a freakout over the Wirz memorial in Andersonville.

I guess that’s deep enough in the boonies that Antifa types wouldn’t know about it and wouldn’t go there if they did. Those hick people are icky!!

Gee, all they did was fire on Fort Sumter and have Democrats who started the KKK…

MK75Gunner

Still waiting on the demand to tear down the FDR statues. This guy rounded up American citizens and legal Aliens and sent them to concentration camps. He appointed Hugo Black, a Klansman, to the Supreme Court, the man who wrote the majority opinion in the Korematsu decision. He signed an executive order forcing people to turn in their gold whether they wanted to or not and exchange it for paper money. Oh but he’s the icon of the left with his fascistic tendencies. The closest thing this country ever had to an actual dictator and we hear nothing about tearing his statues down and taking his name off of buildings.

The Other Whitey

This has reached the point of absurdity. Regardless of her namesake, USCGC Taney is a good ship with an honorable history. Here’s a suggestion: install an exhibit on the ship giving the details on the man himself. Include the chickenshit decision his court made in Scott vs Sanford. And also include the fact that the ship was named by a democrat administration. That party should never again get a pass on any of the skeletons in their closet.

Peter the Bubblehead

This!

SFC D

Nailed it!

E4 Mafia '83-'87

I said it before, and I’ll say it again. They are coming for the names of our aircraft carries.

They are named after old white guys (gasp)!

AW1 Rod

POTUS has threatened to veto the NDAA, should the retro-historians include a provision to rename ten Army bases named for Confederate generals.

These virtue-signalling, pantywaist douche rockets need to be slapped down. Hard!

CDR_D

Taney sailor here, 1967-69. ‘Outrageous’ is all I can say at the moment.

ArmyATC

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but as a national historic isn’t it a violation of federal law to deface the ship? Yet that’s just what that foundation is doing by stripping the name from her. Why won’t the feds step in and strip Baltimore of the ship?

Mason

Coast Guard should just come and take the boat back. They never give them away, they just lend them to the museums where they’re held in trust. Want to desecrate the heritage of our ship? We’ll find a more friendly port. Charleston ain’t too far away, and they’ve got a nice little naval museum (if you consider the centerpiece USS Yorktown carrier to be little) and needs another USCGC (they previously had two and currently have none).

Cameron

Can the Coast Guard actually do that?

Mason

In theory, absolutely. The federal government retains ownership.

I’m not certain how we are erasing history by renaming this ship…had it been left to rot after being decommissioned we wouldn’t even be talking about it today.

It’s not as if due to renaming this ship everyone will forget that we had the Dred Scott decision made by a slavery defending SCOTUS head justice.

Renaming it won’t change the fact it carried his name for decades or what it did during the war and post war periods. No one who takes the time to visit it will be deprived of that knowledge…those who don’t visit it now probably won’t in the future and they couldn’t tell you shit about the ship, Roger Taney or WW2 in any event.

That said perhaps a better choice is to leave the name and point out that this nation’s history includes some really shitty people like Roger B. Taney son of wealthy slave owners who used that wealth gained through the enslavement of others to propel himself into high government where he could have a detrimental effect on the law of the land by declaring African Americans non-citizens under the law and defending slavery to the best of his ability.

OWB

Exactly. What is to be gained by changing it now? Pretty much nothing other than a very few folks getting bragging rights about accomplishing, uh, well, nothing actually. Will it cost $$ to do it? Probably.

Why bother? Make a stand over something which means something.

SFC D

You expect people to learn something that’s not on a check-the-block test? That’s inconceivable!

11B-Mailclerk

Democrat racists out of sight, Democrat racists out of mind.

-that- is why erasing history is wrong.

We liberate folks. They enslave them. Bang that drum.

A Proud Infidel®™

I second the motion of the USCG repo’ing it and telling the bitches who run Baltimore to go pound sand!

SFC D

Bad luck to rename a vessel unless it changes ownership.

Green Thumb

At least this vessel has has been in battle.

More so than some of the self-righteous ass clowns who want to change the name.

This is not going to stop.

I saw the other day that some folks wanted to get rid of Lincoln’s statue. Yeah. You read that right. They have no clue to what he did.

What a bunch of morons.

Trump ain’t the brightest but the other option(s) are down right scary.

Give me a fucking break….. Forget history? Doomed to repeat.

And yet, not a damn word about renaming or taking down anything concerning Robert C Byrd. Oh wait, he was a democrat….move along, nothing to see here. A statue of the late U.S. senator Robert Byrd (D., W.Va.) stands in the U.S. Capitol. Some 55 bridges, highways, dams, and other facilities in Byrd’s state carry his name. These honor Byrd’s 51 years in the Senate, including 12 as Democratic leader, as recently as 1989. Byrd told the late Fox News anchor Tony Snow this about race relations in March 2001: “There are white niggers. I’ve seen a lot of white niggers in my time; I’m going to use that word.” Byrd led the 83-day Democratic filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act and spoke nonstop for its defeat for 14 hours on the Senate floor. Senators Byrd, Russell, Fulbright, and Albert Gore Sr. were among the segregationist Democrats who filibustered to keep Jim Crow alive. Byrd also was an Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan, for which he recruited some 150 fresh Klansmen in the 1940s. Byrd wrote the KKK’s Imperial Wizard in 1946: “The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia.” Why have Democrats not cleansed the Capitol of this former Klansman’s image, and urged West Virginians to do likewise? Now, now, now, Brother Skyjumper, you can’ be bringing up all of that ancient history on the “Gentleman” from West Virginia. It is not good to speak dead of the evil. Disparaging against dasHitlerbeast’s mentor could get you her attentions. You could get self murdered, or even worse, be required to “service her.” And as she would say, “At this point in time, what difference does it make?”

And you ask why none of the glorious symbols and memorials to the late great Kleagle Byrd Man have not been removed? Well, Good Sir, when a political party such as the demonrats can not only return to the Senate a murderous, trash from hell coward, they attempt to nominate said murderous trash from hell for the highest office in the land, and then they and their colleagues “lionize” him as a hero of the people, what makes you think they will remove any memorials to a fine outstanding man of the people such as Byrd? /s/

Even worse, Morales is apparently a former USCG Sr. Chief who SERVED on Taney… Thanks for putting this up Ed.
