Weekend Open Thread

| June 26, 2020

In just a few days, we will be halfway done with 2020. The first half of the year whipped by real quick. The next half may whip by just as fast. We have the Fourth of July around the corner, the presidential nomination conventions, the campaigns, and then the presidential election in November. If President Trump wins re-election, the rest of 2020 will have plenty of “entertainment”. Enjoy your weekend.

All righty then, this ought to make it real interesting…for awhile anyways. We’re going to initially turn the WOT into a Random Open Thread for the Holiday Open Thread, Random since we don’t know the time it may drop, and Holiday because…well, it’s a Holiday. And a most special holiday for the majority of us here as it celebrates our Declaration of Independence from an oppressive grubmint, that whole taxation without representation. Odd how some of that hasn’t changed. But then, again, I digress. And Weekend cause it’s a weekend. And the next, true, TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread, the ONLY Open Thread where the FIRST is recorded in the Coveted Book of FIRST will happen on the following Friday at a later time. Hmmmm?

This may give a distinct advantage to those that use their phones for email and inherwebz surfing. I’ll leave the deciphering of that up to our more IT savvy Readers. “…posted towards the end of Thursday afternoon.” “The WOTs after that will be posted around the same timeframe…” A quick Google Foo using the question “what time does afternoon end and evening begin(?)” gave a number of, literally, 125 million responses. And no, I didn’t check all of them. Short answer is, Depends…ie, where are you and who are you asking. 1659hrs to 1759hrs or twilight seemed to be the most popular. Nobody made mention if that was GMT, ZULU, EDST, EST, or TAHT.

Until we get a feel for the rhythm of the time frames to be used, I do believe my record of ACE x 2 and 1 will stand for a bit. Good Luck to my fellow miscreanted d’weeds and weedettes.

Ahem! Fire Mission, Fire Mission, Fire Mission! Need we say more? THE King of Battle in spite of his sorry and depression of missing his long planned road trip has seen thru the fog and, once again, come out on Top for the Battle of FIRST, on the Coveted EARNED never AWARDED, FIRST TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread.

My compliments to one of my all time favorite former ossifers, ninja, for a hard fought 2nd and a wish to the ninja family for the Roll of the Tide to Roll. And BTW, GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY.

My afternoon and evening should have been spent here:

KoB:

I hope and pray that you WILL be able to travel in the future to visit Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore is on the ninja family’s bucket list to see before we depart this Earth.

We are praying that God’s Hands will protect one of or Nation’s Icons from being destroyed by a group of ignorant children who probably were not taught history in school and were raised by Helicopter parents who believe their children could never do anything wrong.

Heaven (literally) Protect Us.

5th/77th FA

Tanks ninja, this would have been my fourth visit. The FIRST was Summer of ’93, again in ’96 and the last time was this time of year of ’09. The last time was the FIRST time that I was able to be there in the evening when they had the laser show. It was AWESOME. The NPS has just instituted a new policy of inviting all of the Veterans in the crowd to come up on stage to be recognized and thanks for their Service. SnL L and my Lady Friend pushed Brother and I out into the aisle where we were scooped up by Park Service people and escorted down. As Miss Park Ranger went from person to person asking their name and branch of Service she hesitated when I called my name and US Army Artillery and Brother called his name and USAF and asked. “Brothers?” Upon a nod of affirmative I got the best hug I’ve ever had and a personal Thanks for us being there. That Southern Accent gets them everytime. My 5’7″ gimlet self fell crazy, mad, drunk with power, in love with that 6’4″ ginger haired, blue eyed, well constructed Goddess. I’d of stole a picnic basket just so that Park Ranger could arrest me. After the program, we looked her up to thank all of the NPS People for a job well done. If you have been following my pity party over the last two weeks, you’d of had a nice virtual vacation. The logistics required over the last three (3) years of planning this were on the same level of moving Longstreet’s FIRST Corps from the ANV to the AOT in time for the Chickamauga Battle. Gonna play hell trying to do it again for…reasons. Still got a few days left there (in my mind), and there’s still the trip home (in my mind) Remember too, my route is being planned off of a 1950 Road Atlas…no interstates…no big cities. One big disappointment was I had planned on contacting the TAH Family that was in the states I would be going thru,… Read more »

Heaven and Saint John Moses Browning.

What say you, KoB?

5th/77th FA

I say affirmative and Roger that SFC D. Since I wasn’t able to make my long planned road trip (did I make mention of that yet), I have a quantity of USD that was earmarked for said journey that may have to be spent on one of His Saintly Designs. Wonder if I can find an orphaned BAR somewhere? Hmmmm? I do know that I have room on my belt for…you know, that certain chapter and verse.

Tanks to ninja for bringing up the Korean War Anniversary, and to the others for sharing their Family’s part in it. I had 2 Uncles and 2 Cousins that served there. Fortunately for them, and us, the survived their ordeals. 25 June is also the Birthdate of my Baby Grand Daughter (missing her party) and the One (1) year Anniversary of the passing of one of my Compatriots and former FIRST Sergeants James Boyd, as good a man as ever tore a cartridge, pulled a lanyard, or pickled off an egg.

Tanks to CW for interrupting his mini vac to bring us another serving of his trivia.

Tanks to marinedad61 for his outstanding work on keeping us spread thru out the social media platforms, busting down on phonies. Good luck with the article Dude, I well know how the media can twist what you say. Maybe Ms Thang will be straight with it.

Tanks to thebesig for the Trump Train Shot. I’ll have another comment on trains tomorrow. I guess the Trump Train is to balance out the train that the demonrats want to put us on.

To all of my loyal miscreanted d’weeds and weedettes, the snaks and drinks are on me. The smoking lamp is lit. Oh, and btw, again;

Thank You, KoB, for acknowledging your Uncles and Cousins service in the Korean War.

Happy Belated Birthday to your Granddaughter!

One knows when one has a super First SGT when one remembers them with fondness. Salute to 1SG James Boyd…may he always Rest In Peace.

The ninja family lost one of our CSMs a couple of years ago to a brain tumor. While serving as a CSM outta Fort Lewis, he jumped into Grenada. Additionally, before his Army career, he served in the Marine Corps during Vietnam in the Khe San battle.

I was interviewed by phone, yesterday, by a national magazine,
for a story about Stolen Valor.
Unknown when it will be published,
but I will be notified when it hits the newsstand racks.

Specifically, she wanted my experience as a “volunteer messenger”
who takes the new webpages by Military Phonies and Valor Guardians
and plops them into the hometown pages and groups on Facebook.

She found me based on the Leroy Foley & Rick Jowers events and news stories,
and the effect of Facebook posts and comments on that county.

For a disparate example of the range of Stolen Valor out there,
I provided her with the adventures of Maggie DeSanti,
known to be phonying since 2002,
outed here in 2014
as a phony Silver Star phony Vietnam Veteran phony Army officer,
and outed again in 2019,
after nationwide news media failed to Google her name,
and put her TSA airport feel good push-ups video on the air,
after Honor Flights Arizona failed to Google her name,
and gave her a freebie round trip to Washington, DC.

I reminded the interviewer,
the real kudos belong to the veterans at these websites,
Military Phony, Valor Guardians / This Ain’t Hell,
Guardians of the Green Beret, and even Don S.,
for their due diligence, accuracy, reputation, and efforts
to educate, and put a stop to military phonies in the USA.

For what I contributed, I am (only) a “volunteer messenger”
who is happy and proud to do so, every now and then,
to spread the word of not only the phonies spit out on a regular basis,
but also to bring awareness to this website (and the others),
and the positive purpose they serve everyone in the USA.

I sure hope it comes out this way,
as it’s the 1st time I am putting myself in the national press,
and one never knows how the media presents the story,
until it’s presented.

MarineDad61:

WOW!

Thank You so much for sharing!

Looking forward to reading the magazine article. Keep preaching about SV issues MarineDad61 and let us know when the publication hits the newsstands. I’m sure your truth will prevail because you have facts backing your research.

MarineDad61

Thanks, Comm Center Rat.

The research is really done by the veterans of THIS website.
Not me.
I am a fan, reader, and follower,
and sometimes COURIER (“Volunteer Messenger”),
who carries the work of this website
to the backdoors and neighborhood corners
of some of the outed Stolen Valor phonies,
by plopping MP and TAH/VG links on posts and comments
in various Facebook pages and groups.

I often add technical details in comments
to convince the doubters and deniers,
which usually end up convincing many others,
if not the whiny deniers who complain about the truth.
🙂

Friend

I love when you send them love EVERYWHERE.

MarineDad61

Thanks, Friend.
You should see some of the PMs (Facebook private messages) I get.
Not only from newly outed phonies,
but often from their relatives and friends,
who aren’t ready (yet) to admit being fooled
by someone they trust(ed).
Some of them put rap music to shame.

Sadly, the 70th Anniversary of the “Forgotten War” AKA “The Korean War”, the “The Korean Conflict” was not acknowledged yesterday, 25 June 2020, on TAH.

In honor of my Dad, my Father -In-Law and my Uncles as well as other Korean War Veterans, I Ackowledge and Salute You.

Never Forget Our Korean War Veterans. Our President and First Lady Did Not Forget:

“Trump, First Lady Mark 70th Anniversary Of The Start of Korean War”

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/jun/25/trump-first-lady-mark-70th-anniversary-start-korea/

“President Trump and Melania Trump on Thursday visited the Korean War Memorial in Washington to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of the conflict that divided the Asian peninsula, with the U.S. backing the south.”

“Mr. Trump and the first lady stood in quiet reflection before laying their hands on a pre-positioned wreath at the National Mall site.”

“The president saluted and Mrs. Trump placed her hand on her heart as a military trumpeter played “Taps.” The first couple then greeted elderly veterans on hand for the ceremony.”

“Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt and Lee Soo Hyuck — South Korea’s ambassador to the U.S. — also attended.”

“The Korean War began June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces backed by China and the Soviet Union advanced into South Korea.”

“The U.S. sustained over 33,000 combat deaths in the war, which lasted three years.”

29LB:

We are still proud of our Vietnam Vets.

My Dad, my Father-In-Law and Uncles, all career Army, served in the Korean War AND the Vietnam War…and in both conflicts, were boots on the ground.

One Uncle served in the Signal Corps in Korea and Vietnam. The others served in the Infantry, Quartermaster Corps ad AG Corps (sorry, KoB, no Field Artillery) in both conflicts.

A combination of Junior Enlisted, NCOs and Ossifers.

None of them ever talked about their time in those conflicts. It was years later that I discovered a couple of them had Valor awards for what they did.

Thank You for honoring our Korean War Veterans.

Never Forget.

The Other Whitey

I still have the rifle my Step-Grandpa (Dad’s step-dad) brought home from Korea. Once, as a kid, I asked him about something I read about “too cold for snow” being a thing. He said that, if Korea taught him anything, it was “ain’t no such thing as too cold for snow!”

I miss that old man. God rest him.

ninja

TOW:

Thank You so much for fondly remembering your StepGrandpa.

That is wonderful you have his rifle.

Graybeard

My only uncle was in Korea.

Technically he was an aviation mechanic, USAF. But he told of getting to ride shotgun in some of the combat jets and seeing the flak around them. He said that was a real funny feeling.

Dunno if he was ‘supposed’ to be there in the plane or not.

I’ve got that story on video somewhere around here, I think.

Lost him to cancer a few years ago.

ninja

Graybeard:

Thank You for sharing about your Uncle and his Service in Korea.

All Korean War Veterans are important, no matter what Branch of the Military they were affliated with.

Rest In Peace to your Uncle. I know you are still proud of him.

Another bit of historical connection, ninja:
When back in the States afterwards, he met a little German beauty whom he married and brought back to Texas.

She had been a child in eastern Germany during WWII, in a little town now in Poland where some of the German aircraft had been made.
She remembered seeing Adolf Hitler as a child.

She and her mother later evacuated to Berlin ahead of the Russian advance, lived there during the Allied bombing and afterwards into the Occupation. Her aunt had made it to the USA, and she and her mother were sponsored to come as well.

When they met, he spoke no German, she spoke no English, but they married anyway.

I have her stories on video – it is a surprise they lived long enough to see the end of the War.

She is still alive, and I get to talk with her from time to time during The Isolation. She has a much better perspective on all this.

Commissioner Wretched

Just because I’m spending the weekend away (little mini-vacation), I haven’t forgotten my duties at TAH. Here is this week’s trivia, minted just for my friends! DID YOU KNOW…? What was the original name of the beloved “Star Wars” character Yoda? By Commissioner Wretched Funny things keep popping up in the e-mail bag. No, not jokes or anything like that, but funny requests. Like the one that asks me to run a photo of myself with the column each week. Why in the world would anybody want to see what I look like, anyway? When I write the Opinion column in our flagship papers, I have to use a photo of myself, but I would rather not expose the rest of you to my somewhat homely visage. I have the original face made for radio. As a matter of course, I advise people to check to make sure their cameras still work if they somehow snap my photo. And during my 10 years in television news, I fought down the constant urge to apologize to the viewers for what was on their screens. In other words, no, I won’t put my picture with the column. Besides, it would take space away from the trivia, and that’s what you came here for anyway, right? Did you know … … Elvis Presley (1935-1977) earned a grade of “C” in his eighth-grade music class? (Goes to show you what sticking with something will get you, though, doesn’t it?) … in Connecticut, it is illegal to see a UFO? (I rather suspect that it’s really illegal to report seeing a UFO, but that’s just quibbling.) … there is a café in France where what you pay for coffee depends on your attitude? The Petite Syrah in Nice, France, offers its coffee as follows, depending on how you order it: “Coffee” – 7 euros; “Coffee, please” – 4.25 euros; “Good morning, may I have a coffee, please” – 1.40 euros. (I suppose that if you come in with a huge smile and friendly manner, they pay you to drink the coffee.) … most of the… Read more »

“Go find a pay phone today. I challenge you.)”

Down the road where the ninja family resides is a 7-11. In the parking lot is a pay phone…not a booth, but still a pay phone.

Need to take a picture of it using a real camera (versus a smartphone) and send it to one of our favorite BEAT NAVY Admin Gurus as proof..*gabn, I mean grin*

Who on TAH remembers trying to find loose coins in the return coin slot in a phone booth…or nasty, torn telephone books tethered by coils to the small table within the booth…or seeing how many folks can fit inside a booth..or DIALing a number instead of punching out a number…

To this day, still can’t figure out why Superman had to change his outfit in a nasty, snelly, small-spaced telephone booth..Gee Whiz, where does he change his clothes now?

😉

Boy, talk about a germ-infested place…course, we never thought anything about it, because that was the norm, the phone booth that is…maybe that is why the ninja family has developed a “hohum” attitude toward the current Flu Virus, AKA COVID 19..if one had survived using a telephone booth, well….

To Each His Own.

Thank You, CW, for another week of interesting trivia.

😎😉

Mason

New house has a community pool. No lifeguard kind of thing. There’s a list of rules and at the bottom is the address for the nearest “emergency phone.” It’s at least 1 mile as the crow flies and closer to 3 if you go by road, across one four lane 55 MPH county road and across another Interstate highway.

Apparently that’s the nearest public phone.

The Other Whitey

The town I live in still has a functional (albeit run-down) phone booth! It’s in front of the local ice-cream-&-burgers place (which I highly recommend, by the way). This in spite of reliable cell signal!

As for the bacon, anybody ever play “Wasteland 2?” For those who haven’t, the premise is that it’s post-nuke-war Arizona, and the player is a member of the Desert Rangers. Among some amusing side hustles is an ongoing mission to supply the Rangers’ explosives guy with manure, because it’s the most readily-available source of nitrates (yes, the game rewards you for carrying shit around in your pack). He greets you with “Hey man, you got that shit I need?” You either tell him “Sorry, bro, we ain’t got shit,” or “Have a look at this shit,” to which he declares “That’s some good shit, brother!”

Bear in mind that this game includes things like a pair of train-worshipping Indian tribes, an ICBM-worshipping cult whose answer to everything is suicide via dirty-bomb vest, multiple obvious references to “Blazing Saddles,” and an achievement for your character getting the clap. And it has giant man-eating honey badgers (who, the game specifically reminds you, don’t give a shit) from whose carcasses you can loot…..badger nutsacks. Seriously. And gems like the description of the Bren gun that “Looks like it was looted from a museum, stripped, and put back together by a drunk idiot,” or the more succinct one for the M60: “Oink, oink!”

5th/77th FA

There were people (Technicians) specifically hired by Ma Bell for the “Coin” Division, job was not only to maintain the phones and the booths/stations, it was also to collect the money. The ironclad rule at the phone factory is you did not mess with the “coin, copper, or cooter” except they used the word that rhymed with punt. Those techs had a special little safe thingie and the service vans were set up differently. Each phone knew how much coin it had taken in since it was last emptied. Those jobs were being transitioned out, least ways in the Bell South Area, in the late 90s and early 2000s. By the time AT&T did their hostile takeover…er..err…bought BS out we were pretty much out of that business for the phones/booths/stations themselves. Very few left that we had a line going to when I was sent home. The exact figures that Ma Bell took in from coin was always proprietary info, but it was a serious chunk of change, literally, back in the day. Wasn’t unusual for a technician or two to spend all day, everyday, at say, the Atlanta Airport.

On the nitrate subject, TOW’s example was from a game, but during that unpleasantness between 1861 and 1865 there were old men or young boys detailed to go house to house, everyday, to collect the contents of the chamber pots to use in the production of gunpowder. It became even more important after the loss of the nitrate mines in Tennessee. Because of this contribution, the Confederate Laboratory in Macon and the big powder works in Augusta never lost a day’s production due to lack of material.

Short week next week, then back out on the road. I dare Cuomo to pull me over. I wish a motherfucker would.

Which jerk, I mean, Cuomo, do you speak of?

There IS two of them, correct?

No offense to anyone who lives North of the Mason-Dixon line, but IMHO, Cuomo’s voice is similiar to listening to someone raking their fingernails over a Chalkboard…

You know how to take down an Enemy in Combat? Record Cuomo’s voice and then play it over and over and over again at night via speakers to the enemy (Psyops)….

It will drive them so batty that they will start waving a white flag…

Good to see you posting again, Chipster…and that your spirits are high…

BTW, thank you for being open and honest about “PC”…as with alot of things, “PC” has gone overboard, so overboard that it is destroying our Nation and dividing us as a Country that is supposed to be unified.

I blame the Media for that hype. We give too much attention to “Famous” people and care what THEY think versus what the common, ordinary everyday people think.

I remember the riots and disharmony of the 60s. Perhaps it is because I am now a bit older, but IMHO, the world we live in today is WORSE than the 60s..i.e. “Don’t Do This..Don’t Say That, Don’t Be This, Don’t, Don’t,Don’t”..

It is becoming “You Can’t Do This, You Can’t Do That..”

I dread the day when the Law of Our Land becomes “You Cannot Worship Because You May Offend Someone”…

Commissar

Outdated, we are over 125,000 dead now and infections are at all time highs in several areas…

https://youtu.be/zXtrgih0PsI

A Proud Infidel®™

MORE cases are being detected simply due to the fact that there is more testing being done while the death rate is still FAR lower than the annual flu.

STILL a fake crisis in my mind, but you’re following your herder and panicking just like when you were screeching about an apocalypse from the Zika virus!

Commissar

That is false. The percentage of positive test results are going up.

Meaning a higher percentage of the population is infected.

Testing does not increase cases.

The cases increase with or without testing, depshit.

Testing just allows us to better understand and track the spread as well as prepare for future medical needs since patients frequently decompensate a few weeks after they show first symptoms.

A Proud Infidel®™

You’re full of shit as usual.

11B-Mailclerk

Testing. And for some reason, you folks won’t discuss that the vast majority of “increase” are folks who had it months ago and didn’t notice or were not sick enough to care.

And the hospitals are not filling up with -new- cases.

So again, you base your position on fraud.

A Proud Infidel®™

NO MATTER WHAT amount of true facts, logic and common sense you, I and others lob at Major Moonbat aka Lars, he WILL NEVER deviate from the propaganda he is spoon-fed by his UC Berzerkely Perfessers!!!

11B-Mailclerk

His feed is not “berserkley”.

Hondo

Johns Hopkins begs to differ regarding the US death total. As of approx 4:02PM EDT today, its Wuhan Coronavirus tracking map shows less than 125,000 US deaths.

Seriously: where are you getting this specious data that routinely tends higher than other authoritative sources, Commissar Wumao – the Soros Foundation?

Commissar

John Hopkins does not have the up to date info.

I find it fucking astonishing that has to be explained to you.

And even our most accurate and up to date counts are expected to be off by 30%-50% since many deaths are not detected due to other conditions and lack of Sufficient testing.

SFC D

You need to learn a little civility. Your credibility is zero because you’re not only wrong 95% of the time, you’re a complete prick about it. Great way to sell us all on the glories of your progressive utopia.

If Guinness gave out a World Record for being a SHITHEAD, Major Moonbat aka Lars would be a perennial World Record Holder in that category!!!

The Other Whitey

Really, Lars? You know more about it than one of the premiere medical institutions in the world? Wow! Why didn’t Obama give you a cabinet post?

Yes, that’s sarcasm, dickhead. You know this is why nobody takes you seriously, right?

NHSparky

Or 30-50% off because deaths due to other causes while someone happens to be coronavirus positive is being listed as a coronavirus death.

You obviously side-stepped my question, dipstick.

Just where are you getting your info – you know, the info you claim is “more accurate” than that from JHU?

Is it Media Matters? DU? The Soros Foundation? Xinhua? Where?

When someone consistently won’t ID their sources, it’s impossible to evaluate their claims’ validity (or even verify that the comment is accurate, even if the source may not be credible). When someone does that consistently – like you do in your comments here – I eventually begin to wonder if perhaps they’re getting their “facts” via the MSU method.

Well? Are you?

NHSparky

Which, when compared to NY, NJ, PA, and MA (all Dem-run states), are still miniscule.

ArmyATC

You’re serious! You link a Youtube propaganda video from April as proof for your claim while denying the data from Johns Hopkins. Could you be any more obtuse?

Stunts such as that is the reason I often refer to Commissar Wumao here as Koalemos.

BTW, nice job on the “Trump Express” loco even though its photoshopped on a GE freight loco in the AT&SF “Warbonnet”. IMHO it would look better applied to say, an Alco PA or an EMD E Unit, maybe a slope-nosed E6!

I’m sure that they’re planning on letting Minneapolis become New Mogadishu or New Monrovia and then blaming President trump for the mess THEY created.

Combat Historian

I have just begun my long summer vacation down in the land of palm trees and bikinied southern beauties. Good to get away from the indigo blue shithole city where I live. Will try to relax the best I can amidst all the crap we’re all living through. Will catch up here when I can. Y’all take care and watch six…

If you’re looking for a social media site that won’t censor and delete your posts because you lean right or “fact check” your posts (beware, while Parler itself won’t fact check your posts, other users WILL fact check your posts, most likely with solid sources), then checkout Parler, a second competitor to Twitter along with Gab. I just set up my account on it.

ROCK ON, I wish for them to win with flying colors!!!

Seriously? That is an “eat cake” moment.

IMHO the left is doing ALL IT CAN to hand President Trump a landslide victory in November!!!!
