John Shannon Simpson served under five years in the Marines, leaving as a private. He was a disbursing clerk. His military history also included a special court-martial. However, this wasn’t the story he was telling people when he asked for donations for this charity.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of this charity, Marines & Mickey, Simpson claimed that he was a master sergeant, drill instructor, as well as a recon Marine. <\/span>He informed prospects that his charity assisted families with attending Marine boot camp graduation, as well as Disney.<\/p>\n

Many believed him, including a gold star mom. They collectively donated over $400,000.00 to his charity over two years. He kept most of the proceeds.<\/p>\n

Court documents revealed that the victims of Simpson’s charity scam included active-duty Marines and the mother of a Marine killed in the 2015 attack on the military recruiting center in Chattanooga, Tennessee<\/p>\n

The Charlotte Observer identified the mother as Cathy Wells, whose son, Lance Cpl. Skip Wells, was killed in the 2015 shooting incident.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Wells dished out nearly $135,000 dollars to the charity, court documents detailed<\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Simpson pocketed $391,000 from the nearly $481,000 he raised from 2014-2016<\/u>, feds said in court documents.<\/p>\n

Feds also alleged in court documents that Simpson lied about his military service to get more donations<\/span><\/strong>, telling donors he was a Marine master sergeant and prior drill instructor and recon Marine<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But court documents said Simpson served less than five years as a disbursing clerk and was reduced to private following a special court-martial for being absent without leave.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John Simpson was sentenced to four years in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. This sentence is being served in conjunction with a nine-year sentence handed down by a state judge. Simpson was convicted of sexual assault in a state court.<\/p>\n
