Florida AG James Uthmeier sues Jacksonville for $5M over \u2018illegal gun registry\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nJACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a lawsuit against the city of Jacksonville on Tuesday, alleging the municipal government maintained an \u201cillegal gun registry\u201d for nearly two years under the administration of Mayor Donna Deegan.<\/p>\n

The state is seeking a $5 million judgment against the city, citing a violation of Florida law that strictly prohibits government entities from keeping records of privately owned firearms or their owners.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Second Amendment is not a second-class right, and we will use all power of this office to protect the rights of Floridians,\u201d Uthmeier said in a video statement.<\/p>\n

The \u2018log book\u2019 allegations<\/strong>
\nAccording to Uthmeier, the illegal practices began in July 2023, shortly after Mayor Deegan took office. City management reportedly approved a security policy requiring officers to record the names, ages, and state-issued ID numbers of visitors carrying firearms into city buildings, along with details on the type of weapon.<\/p>\n

The attorney general alleged that the city maintained this registry until April 2025. The practice came to a head when an individual legally carrying a firearm was reportedly denied entry to a city building after refusing to provide the requested information to security officers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
