That truck later crashed about four miles from the initial scene, and Mallett was found with gunshot wounds. He later died at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>At that point, Hughes was on foot. And that\u2019s when things took a turn that hits a lot closer to home.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies say Hughes made his way to another residence and attempted to break in. But this homeowner wasn\u2019t waiting to find out what happened next. He was armed.<\/p>\n<p>And when Hughes tried to force entry, the homeowner opened fire, stopping the threat.
