Both gunmen in Riverfront Live shooting say they acted in self-defense<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBoth men who officials say were shooting at each other March 1 inside the Riverfront Live nightclub are saying they acted in self-defense.<\/p>\n

Attorney Clyde Bennett II, who was retained by 29-year-old Derrick Long, told The Enquirer on March 5 that Long was a victim in the shooting, “no different from the other individuals who were shot.”<\/p>\n

Bennett said the law enforcement investigation, “along with statements from patrons who were present at the bar that evening, clearly demonstrate that Mr. Long acted in lawful self-defense after being shot by Franeek Cobb.”<\/p>\n

At a court hearing two days earlier, Cobb’s attorney, Anna Mallory, said Cobb, 24, acted in self-defense.<\/p>\n

Investigators said in court documents that surveillance video showed Cobb looked at Long, then pulled out a gun and began firing at Long who fell to the floor.<\/p>\n

At that point, Long pulled out a gun and “began firing multiple gunshots in the direction of Cobb,” the documents say.<\/p>\n

Long was among the nine people who officials said were wounded in the shooting. Prosecutors said Cobb had a longstanding grudge against Long.<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Bennett: “Mr. Long was simply enjoying a night out with his girlfriend when Mr. Cobb confronted him and pointed a firearm at him.”<\/p>\n

Cobb then began firing multiple shots at Long, who was struck several times.<\/p>\n

“Faced with an immediate and life-threatening attack, Mr. Long had no reasonable option but to return fire, in order to stop Mr. Cobb from killing him,” Bennett said. “Had Mr. Long not acted to defend himself, he likely would not be alive today.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
