79-year-old landlord fatally shot naked trespasser who was attacking tenant, police say<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nLOS ANGELES (KCAL\/KCBS) – It\u2019s difficult to make out exactly what the naked man was saying in the surveillance video, but it\u2019s clear to see what happens next.<\/p>\n

He picks up what looks like street signs while screaming, then suddenly runs across Tujunga Avenue in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just was walking up and down the sidewalk. Then he saw the gate was open and ran over there in their gate,\u201d one witness described.<\/p>\n

Neighbors say they heard screaming, which turned into gunfire.<\/p>\n

\u201cMultiple gunshots. I couldn\u2019t tell specifically. I could tell it was very close to my bedroom,\u201d Robert Mendoza said.<\/p>\n

Mendoza lives in the complex where Los Angeles police say the naked man broke into the home of a woman who was alone and started screaming.<\/p>\n

Police say her 79-year-old landlord, a Vietnam War veteran, came running to help.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe tells the suspect to leave, warns him that he has a gun,\u201d Los Angeles Police Capt. Warner Castillo said. \u201cGrabs the 79-year-old man and lifts him up and throws him on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police say the landlord suffered two broken legs, but still had the strength to keep fighting before shooting the suspect three times, killing him.

\nWhile investigators work to piece together why the suspect came here, Mendoza says there\u2019s been issues in the past, often tied to unhoused individuals, and says something needs to change.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw everything almost first hand and it\u2019s really kind of scary and the safety of the public,\u201d Mendoza said. \u201cThis is bound to happen, something like this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
