Two EMS workers stole a blue collection mailbox in Oakland County by using a stretcher to load it into an ambulance, and then they exposed themselves by calling to ask if they could keep it.<\/p>\n
Ryan Baugh and Jacob Sandrock are accused of theft of government property and obstruction of mail in a criminal complaint that was unsealed Tuesday, July 16, 2024.<\/p>\n
Blue collection box stolen<\/strong>
\nOfficials received a report from the Bloomfield Hills postmaster on April 30 that the blue United States Postal Service collection box at 2550 South Telegraph Road was missing.<\/p>\nPostal maintenance workers said there was no work order for that area, and there had been no plans to remove the mailbox.<\/p>\n
EMS worker calls about mailbox<\/strong>
\nAt 11:33 a.m. May 2, a postal technician received a call from Baugh, who asked if he could keep a blue collection box that he found next to a dumpster in Bloomfield Township, the complaint says.<\/p>\nLocal 4 went to the mailbox on Wednesday and confirmed that it stands about 10 feet away from a dumpster. But it\u2019s also bolted to a slab of concrete.<\/p>\n
The postal technician asked Baugh why he wanted to keep the collection box, and Baugh said it was for personal use and decorative purposes.<\/p>\n
Baugh was told that he is not allowed to keep the collection box.<\/p>\n
Officials traced the caller\u2019s phone number and found that it belonged to Baugh, which is how they first linked him to the case.<\/p>\n
Phone call from EMS manager<\/strong>
\nAbout 23 minutes later, the postal technician received a call from the manager of the STAR EMS on Telegraph Road in Southfield.<\/p>\nThe manager said he didn\u2019t think his employees, Baugh and Sandrock, had taken the collection box. He told the technician that Baugh claimed someone at the Postal Inspection Service told him he could keep it.<\/p>\n
Baugh calls again<\/strong>
\nAbout 10 minutes later, Baugh called the postal technician again and said that a blue collection box was at the EMS station in Southfield. He provided the door code.<\/p>\nThe technician asked Baugh for the identity of the person who helped take the collection box, and Baugh said he knew him as \u201cJacob,\u201d but didn\u2019t know his last name.<\/p>\n
Officials said they later confirmed that the second person involved was Sandrock.<\/p>\n
Evidence against EMS workers<\/strong>
\nPostal inspectors met with the EMS manager on May 2, and he confirmed that Baugh and Sandrock had been on duty at the time the mailbox was taken.<\/p>\nThe manager said the pair were identified via GPS, which showed the ambulance had been stopped at the location of the missing mailbox between 5:22 p.m. and 5:29 p.m. April 29.<\/p>\n
Video inside the ambulance showed Baugh and Sandrock using a stretcher to load the collection box into the back, officials said. That video was turned over to investigators.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the video, Sandrock and Baugh are clearly seen stealing and loading a USPS collection box into their ambulance,\u201d the criminal complaint reads. \u201cOn the video, Baugh states that if he and Sandrock get an emergency call, they will have to dispose of the USPS collection box.\u201d<\/p>\n
USPS collection boxes are worth about $1,800 each.<\/p>\n

\nPostal inspectors interviewed Sandrock on May 6 about the mailbox theft.<\/p>\nSandrock began by saying that stealing it had been \u201cf—— stupid,\u201d in hindsight.<\/p>\n
He claimed he hadn\u2019t seen the mailbox until the previous week and thought it was trash because it was near a dumpster. He said Baugh told him it was trash.<\/p>\n
\u201cSandrock stated Baugh told him he got permission from the post office to take it,\u201d the criminal complaint says. \u201cSandrock stated Baugh thought it could be used as a drop box for their medical reports.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sandrock also admitted during the interview that the collection box had been bolted into the concrete, officials said.<\/p>\n

\nPostal inspectors also spoke to Baugh on May 6.<\/p>\nHe told them he had noticed the collection box around April 22. He said he sent a picture of the mailbox to his boss over text and suggested it could be used in the EMS office.<\/p>\n
Baugh said he believed the mailbox was no longer being used because it was next to a dumpster. He thought he could refurbish it for a dropbox to be used for medical reports.<\/p>\n
Baugh said he took the mailbox to the EMS station, and admitted it was his idea to do so.<\/p>\n
Post Office officials said the collection box has always been in that spot, but the dumpster is new.<\/p>\n

Marsaw, of Natchez, worked as a field director for Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Natchez Democrat reported.<\/p>\n
Marsaw also wrote that the shooting \u2014 which killed one rally attendee and critically wounded two others \u2014 \u201ccouldn\u2019t [have] happened to a nicer fellow,\u201d though she insisted that it was a \u201cstaged\u201d incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what your hate speech got you!\u201d she added in a third post, seemingly referring to Trump\u2019s often-controversial takes on social and political issues.<\/p>\n
As of Sunday morning, all the posts had been deleted.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got overwhelmed in the moment,\u201d Marsaw told the Natchez Democrat.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a diehard Democrat,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
She deleted her posts after she was instructed to do so by a manager on Thompson\u2019s team, Marsaw explained.<\/p>\n
The comments, however, continued to draw backlash online.<\/p>\n
\u201c@BennieGThompson should FIRE his field director for condoning the attempted assassination of President @realDonaldTrump!!!\u201d the Mississippi GOP wrote on X alongside screenshots of the comments.<\/p>\n
Mississippi Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann echoed calls for Marsaw\u2019s ouster, writing that Thompson should let her go \u201cimmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWith staff like this the poison is deep,\u201d former Republican presidential candidate and House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) chimed in.<\/p>\n
On Sunday afternoon, Thompson confirmed that Marsaw was \u201cno longer in [his] employment,\u201d Fox News\u2019 Aishah Hasnie reported.<\/p>\n
Marsaw\u2019s firing came as conservatives decried left-leaning social media users who were celebrating and even making light of the Saturday night shooting.<\/p>\n
Some of the tasteless jabs included mock s\u00e9ances summoning the spirit of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth, as well as impassioned cries lamenting that the shooter missed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
