Adjusting his prior prediction of a 72 hour Russian military take-over of Ukraine, General Milley also contradicted White House assertions on the efficacy on the deterrence value of economic sanctions.<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Jen Psaki had stated \u201cSanctions are not an end to themselves. They serve a higher purpose. And that purpose is to deter and prevent.”<\/p>\n

In testimony before the House Armed Services Committee Milley told lawmakers that Russia\u2019s invasion likely could not have been prevented except by the presence of US forces in-country, and warned that the conflict is likely to drag on for years.<\/p>\n

When asked by Rep. Bill Keating (D-Mass.) how long he thought the war could last, Milley responded that it was \u201chard to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley predicted in early February that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could take Kyiv in just “72 hours,” a far cry from the month-long conflict Russia and Ukraine are now engaged in.<\/p>\n

Milley delivered the dire prediction for Ukraine to Congress during closed hearings on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3, saying Ukraine would likely lose 15,000 troops compared to Russia’s 4,000. Milley arrived to Congress to deliver another prediction Tuesday, this time saying the war in Ukraine could last “years.”<\/p>\n

Rep. Bill Keating, D-Mass., pressed Milley on what he now thought the timeline of the conflict would be.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s a bit early, still,” Milley responded. “Even though we\u2019re a month-plus into the war, there is much of the ground war left in Ukraine. But I do think this is a very protracted conflict, and I think it\u2019s at least measured in years. I don\u2019t know about a decade, but at least years for sure.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
