{"id":111109,"date":"2021-03-07T07:30:26","date_gmt":"2021-03-07T12:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=111109"},"modified":"2021-03-06T07:22:30","modified_gmt":"2021-03-06T12:22:30","slug":"another-three-are-accounted-for-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=111109","title":{"rendered":"Another Three Are Accounted For"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Per DPAA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/Our-Missing\/Recently-Accounted-For\/\"><i>\u201cRecently Accounted For\u201d webpage<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/Year\/2021\/\"><i>recent press releases<\/i><\/a>, the following formerly-missing US personnel were recently publicly announced by DPAA as having been accounted for.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>From World War II<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>PFC Juan F. Gutierrez<\/b>, US Army, assigned to the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment, was lost at Cabanatuan, Philippines, on 19 November 1942.  His accounting was announced on 3 March 2021. (see Note)<\/p>\n<p><b><u>From Korea<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>CPT Emil J. Kapaun<\/b>, US Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, was lost in North Korea on 23 May 1951.  His accounting was announced on 5 March 2021. (see Note)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>MSG James Hart, Jr.<\/b>, US Army, assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, was lost IVO Chosin Reservoir, North Korea, on 2 December 1950.  His accounting was announced on 4 March 2021. (see Note)<\/p>\n<p><b><u>From Southeast Asia<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>None<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Welcome back, elder brother-in-arms. Our apologies that your return took so long.<\/p>\n<p>Rest easy.  You\u2019re home now. <\/p>\n<p><strong>. . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 72,000 US personnel remain unaccounted for from World War II; over 7,500 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War; and over 1,500 remain unaccounted for in Southeast Asia (SEA).  Additionally, 126 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Cold War; 5 remain unaccounted for from the Gulf Wars; and 1 individual remains unaccounted for from Operation Eldorado Canyon. <\/p>\n<p>Comparison of DNA from recovered remains against DNA from some (but not all) blood relatives can assist in making a positive ID for unidentified remains that have already been recovered, or which may be recovered in the future.  On their web site&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/Contact\/ContactUs.aspx\"><em>Contact Us<\/em><\/a> page DPAA now has FAQs. One of those FAQs describes who can and cannot submit DNA samples useful in identifying recovered remains. The chart giving the answer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/portals\/85\/Images\/DNA.jpg\"><em>can be viewed here<\/em><\/a>. The text associated with the chart is short and is found in one of the FAQs.<\/p>\n<p>If your family lost someone in one of these conflicts and you qualify to submit a DNA sample, please arrange to submit one. By doing that you just might help identify the remains of a US service member who\u2019s been repatriated but not yet been identified \u2013 as well as a relative of yours, however distant. Or you may help to identify remains to be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody deserves a proper burial. That\u2019s especially true for those who gave their all while serving this nation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><i><u>Author\u2019s Note:<\/u>  MSG Hart\u2019s accounting was announced by DPAA press release on 4 March 2021; CPT Kapaun\u2019s identification was announced via the same means on 5 March.  However, as of 6 March neither accounting was listed on DPAA\u2019s \u201cRecently Accounted For\u201d webpage. <\/p>\n<p>The date of loss above for MSG Hart reflects the date he was noted as MIA.  His precise date of death is not known with certainty.<\/p>\n<p>The Dates of Loss above for PFC Gutierrez and CPT Kapaun reflects the dates they died while held as POWs.  CPT Kapaun was taken prisoner IVO Unsan, North Korea, on 2 November 1950.
