Weekend Open Thread

| June 5, 2020

Enjoy the full moon.

Tomorrow is the 76th Anniversary of D-Day. Today is the full moon. We’re in the first full month of summer if you go by the meteorological seasons. June 1 was the beginning of the meteorological summer. If you go by the astronomical seasons, the beginning of summer is around the corner. Enjoy your weekend.

You might want to check the pockets in that crown.
FA has had it so long he could have left all kinds of stuff in there.
Gotta be a sawbuck or two. Maybe a plug of chew.
NASCAR tickets, Trump stickers, authentication tables…

Congrats to the Combat Historian. Nothing like picking up on orphaned crown of FIRST for the TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread. I must admit I was pulling for my other Brother Roh-Dog, since he has been trying so very hard. I had dropped by a minute ago to squawk at CNN but was visiting with the Family.

I am having a great weekend and we are planning on howling at the full moon while enjoying ourselves.

Naw ninja, it’s good. I had announced FIRST thing this morning, again, the crown would be laying around. Check the comment on the FGS. Got my peeps here and we are in the process of catching up and prepping food stuffs. Some of them it has been a year since we were together and I haven’t seen my Baby Girl and the Grands since Thanksgiving. If I don’t see a Friday Recipe some time today, I’ll drop back here and post some of the menu items that we have planned. A porked beast loin orast has already fell apart coming out of the crockett pot that is slap off the chain. No sauce for him…au jus only.

Wanted to give some others a shot at the FIRST. It’s not like I haven’t been there done that at least 11 times in a row. Me thinks that may be a record. The good news is, again, ARMY BEAT NAVY! hbtd/rtr

“Penny Thoughts: Curious How Riots Have Cured COVID-19” https://www.westalabamawatchman.com/penny-thoughts-curious-how-riots-have-cured-covid-19/ “For the past week, we have witnessed another great American tragedy, which began as a justified protest of the death of a black American citizen at the hands of a white police officer. This tragedy has devolved into a series of rampages commandeered by some violent anarchists most of whom it is thought have come from outside of the plagued cities and are youngsters in their late teens or early twenties.” “Minneapolis, Oakland, Los Angeles, New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Detroit, Denver, D.C., and Portland present a line-up of the American cities in which there have been destructive riots resulting in fires, looting, and property damage. Their mayhem is a testimony to the dissidents’ false protests and an insult to those who have legitimately sought to protest the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin.” “As a superfluous aside, does anyone else see the irony in the fact that the sites of the most virulent episodes are taking place in areas of high population concentrations? This reminds me of one of Thomas Jefferson’s observations on over-crowding: “When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe.” As geometry tells us then, quod erat demonstrando,or in its abbreviate form, Q.E.D.” “Nevertheless, our undivided attention, obeisance and devotion to the strictures and mandates the “pandemic” have been shifted, but this might be a confirmation of our shortened attention spans, as a function of our addiction to current media streams. WOW LOOK AT THIS SHIT!!!! Congratulations Combat Historian. Hanging out. Trying to read back threads, work from home and shit. On the good news front, I am working with my chiropractor and also the National pain and spine group, And have been put on another anti-inflammatory medicine a different blend of gabapentin, Some pain meds which are opioids, but with all the cautions and a piss test and multiple doctors and everybody monitoring it, Even with me in rehab that wasn’t my problem it was too much drinking, but I am extremely aware of the opioid issue so it’s not gonna be a problem. It’s a very low level, extended release drug to try to step on some of the post shingles nerve pain, and inflammation. I have to go in next week to get four shots of Cortizone in the nerve bundle areas to also help relieve the inflammation which will hopefully stop the cycle of triggered nerves which will stop the pain hopefully. After two days I’m feeling some background relief. I may be imagining it a little bit but it seems like I have a very tiny bit more confidence in my step and stepping on a stair or putting any significant weight on my legs rather than just walking. Sorry for the rant but I just thought I’d fill everybody in. Monitoring TAH and military phonies and trying to catch up with my reading because I’ve been too busy to follow threads every day. Looks like things are gonna be opening up a little bit better in the peoples Republic of Maryland tonight so access to some more places and a return to normalcy a bit but I’ll sit back and watch before jumping into the pool as it were. Blessings and love to everybody here hope you all are doing well and moving forward to return to where we used to be some months ago. As we discover that the COVID-19 virus lockdowns were an incredible over-reaction, and we watch the civilized world reel from the blows of riot and looting, I offer peace, tranquility, and a smile with this week’s trivia column. Enjoy, my friends. DID YOU KNOW…? Why did George Lucas give up his Directors Guild membership over “Star Wars”? By Commissioner Wretched This is a very, very special week for me. It was this week, 45 years ago, that I graduated from Spencer High School in Columbus, Georgia. I was the youngest in my graduating class – 16 at the time we walked across the stage. I had no idea how my life would turn out, and in retrospect it didn’t go the way I’d planned in any way, but I’m pleased with how it has gone up to this point. Several life-long friendships came out of that school, and I look forward to every reunion. At the 40th, one classmate said to me, “You haven’t changed a bit!” To which I replied, “I looked like this when I was in school? No wonder I couldn’t get a date!” Forty-five down, many more to go! On to the trivia! Did you know … … it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while sitting on someone’s lap in the city of Cleveland, Ohio? (I suppose using a booster seat is totally out of the question.) … the government of China banned the popular U.S. program “The Big Bang Theory” in 2014? The government said the show “provokes troubles in society.” (Well, I think the Chinese government provokes troubles in society. So there.) … in the city of International Falls, Minnesota, it is illegal for a dog to chase a cat up a telegraph pole? (That only matters if you can find a telegraph pole. Or if you’re a cat.) … lightning strikes on humans leave a special kind of scar? The rare event of a lightning strike on a human leaves a lifelong mark known as a Lichtenberg figure. It resembles a fern tree, mirroring (scientists think) the path the lightning took… Read more »

“The Last American To Collect a Civil War Pension Has Died” https://www.stripes.com/news/us/the-last-american-to-collect-a-civil-war-pension-has-died-1.632424 “The check arrived every month: $73.13.” “Irene Triplett, who lived in a North Carolina nursing home, rarely talked about the source of the money. She was the final American to receive a pension from the Civil War — $877.56 a year from the Department of Veterans Affairs.” “The jaw-dropping fact that someone in the year 2020 was still earning a Civil War pension was the result of two factors: First, Triplett suffered cognitive impairments, qualifying her for the lifelong pension as a helpless adult child of a veteran. Second, her father, Mose Triplett, who’d served as a private in the Confederate Army before defecting to the Union, was on his second marriage when she was born in 1930. He was just a few weeks away from turning 84.” “On Sunday, Irene Triplett died at Accordius Health, a long-term care facility in Wilkesboro, N.C., at the age of 90. A relative said she’d broken her hip a few days earlier and died of complications. She never married, and her only brother had died in 1996.” “Triplett’s story is a powerful reminder that the Civil War wasn’t all that long ago, said Columbia University historian Stephanie McCurry. “Just like the Confederate monuments issue, which is blowing up right now, I think this is a reminder of the long reach of slavery, secession and the Civil War,” she said. “It reminds you of the battle over slavery and its legitimacy in the United States.” “Many more widows and children of other long-ago soldiers are still alive. According to the VA, there are 33 surviving spouses and 18 children receiving pension benefits related to the 1898 Spanish-American War.” “Triplett’s status as a Civil War pensioner began gaining attention in 2011, when the Wilkes Genealogical Society in Wilkes County, N.C., displayed her photograph on its quarterly publication and featured her in a story. The article noted she was one of only two people in the country still reaping a Civil War pension.” “One of the piece’s researchers, Jerry Orton, of Syracuse, N.Y., a… Read more »

https://www.stripes.com/news/us/ex-minneapolis-cop-charged-in-george-floyd-s-death-served-eight-years-in-army-reserve-1.632456

“Derek Chauvin, the fired police officer charged in a Minneapolis man’s death that sparked protests around the world, spent eight years as a military policeman in the Army Reserve, according to his official service record.”

“Chauvin enlisted in the Army Reserve in February 1996 and left in February 2004, about three years after he joined the Minneapolis Police Department, according to his military service record and a redacted copy of his police personnel file. He attained the rank of Specialist in February 1998 and left the service at the same rank.”

“His military awards included the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal with M device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Bar.”

“On his police application to become a community service officer in 2001, Chauvin said he spent seven months at a training center formerly known as the Combat Maneuver Training Center in Hohenfels, Germany, and five months with the 795th Military Police Battalion at former Army base Fort McClellan, Ala.”

James Mattis, who has been nominated to be the next defense secretary, hesitated to send medical evacuation flights and left soldiers to die during a 2001 friendly fire incident in Afghanistan.” “Retired Lt. Col. Jason Amerine, in a Facebook post, said a delay by Mattis in sending rescue aircraft from a nearby base might have led to the deaths of Staff Sgt. Amerine was leading a group of 10 Special Forces soldiers.” “The Green Berets were with future Afghan President Hamid Karzai and were helping to bring about an initial Taliban surrender when the bomb struck.” “Every element in Afghanistan tried to help us except the closest friendly unit, commanded by Mattis,” wrote Amerine, who was awarded a Bronze Star with V device and a Purple Heart for his service during the mission. “Men were ready to drive to get us or send horses from the other side of the country if that was what it took.” “At the time, Mattis was reluctant to send aircraft without knowing the situation on the ground, according to an account in The Only Thing Worth Dying For.” “Well, if they’ve taken fire and you can’t tell me definitively how they got all scuffed up, I’m not going to send anything until you can assure me that the situation on the ground is secure,” Mattis is quoted as saying.” “The Air Force Special Operations Command dispatched… Read more »

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/06/04/army-reservist-navy-and-air-force-vets-plotted-to-terrorize-vegas-protests-prosecutors-charge/

“Three Nevada men with military experience and a connection to a loose movement of right-wing extremists advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government have been arrested on terrorism-related charges in what authorities say was a conspiracy to spark violence during recent protests in Las Vegas.”

“Federal prosecutors say the three white men are accused of conspiring to carry out a plan that began in April in conjunction with protests to reopen businesses closed because of the coronavirus.”

“More recently, they sought to capitalize on protests over the death of George Floyd, a black man who prosecutors say was murdered in Minneapolis by a white officer who pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after he stopped moving and pleading for air, prosecutors said.”

“The three men were arrested Saturday on the way to a protest in downtown Las Vegas after filling gas cans at a parking lot and making Molotov cocktails in glass bottles, according to a copy of the criminal complaint obtained by The Associated Press.”

“Stephen T. Parshall, 35, Andrew T. Lynam Jr., 23, and William L. Loomis, 40, were being held on $1 million bond each in the Clark County jail Wednesday, according to court records. Lynam is from suburban Henderson and the others are from Las Vegas.”

History that happened on 5 June:

*On June 5, 1968, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot and mortally wounded after claiming victory in California’s Democratic presidential primary at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles; assassin Sirhan Bishara Sirhan was arrested at the scene.

*In 1967, war erupted in the Middle East as Israel, anticipating a possible attack by its Arab neighbors, launched a series of pre-emptive airfield strikes that destroyed nearly the entire Egyptian air force; Syria, Jordan and Iraq immediately entered the conflict. The Six-Day War began.

*In 2004, Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, died in Los Angeles at age 93 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

*In 1794, Congress passed the Neutrality Act, which prohibited Americans from taking part in any military action against a country that was at peace with the United States.

*In 1912, U.S. Marines landed in Cuba at the order of President William Howard Taft to ensure order and protect U.S. interests.

*In 1933, the United States went off the gold standard.

*In 1950, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Henderson v. United States, struck down racially segregated railroad dining cars.

*In 1981, the Centers for Disease Control reported that five homosexuals in Los Angeles had come down with a rare kind of pneumonia; they were the first recognized cases of what later became known as AIDS.

*In 2006, more than 50 National Guardsmen from Utah became the first unit to work along the U.S.-Mexico border as part of President George W. Bush’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

This is what I got this morning from online USNI which mentioned when the Midway battle began.

Admiral Nimitz and the Battle of Midway
On this day 78 years ago, the Battle of Midway began. Admiral Chester Nimitz brilliantly led U.S. forces to victory. This 1976 Proceedings article is from the author of Nimitz, published by the Naval Institute Press.
By E. B. Potter

Combat Historian

Battle of Midway began on 04 June 42 if you happen to be on this side of the International Date Line, and 05 June 42 if you were on the other side (west side) of the International Date Line. Since Midway island and its environs pretty much straddle the International Date Line, the naval battle of Midway was fought back and forth across the International Date Line, leading to endless confusion when narrating and writing about the battle. I think what eventually ended up was when Western historians (US, UK, etc) write about the Battle, they usually use date and time from this side of the dateline, while Asian historians (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc) writing about Midway tend to use the date and time from the Asian side of the International dateline…

Hope that clears it up…
