Colonel Tom Moore

Colonel Tom Moore, affectionately known as “Captain Tom,” served as a British Army Officer in WWII in India, the Burma campaign, and Sumatra against the Japanese. On 6 April 2020, at the age of 99, he began to walk laps of his garden in aid of NHS Charities Together, with the goal of raising £1,000 by his hundredth birthday. He overshot his mark.

Mason, of course, sends.

“Captain Tom” Moore, the 100-year-old war veteran who raised more than £32 million (almost $40 million) for NHS charities by walking laps around his garden, is set to receive a knighthood.

Downing Street confirmed the news on Tuesday, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling Moore “a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus.”

“Colonel Tom’s fantastic fundraising broke records, inspired the whole country and provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus,” Johnson said in a statement.

“On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge thank you. He’s a true national treasure.”

Queen Elizabeth has approved the knighthood, and it will be formally announced tomorrow.

She also acknowledged Moore with a personalized birthday card. While it’s become tradition for the Queen to send letters to all British centenarians celebrating birthdays, Moore’s contained a message specific to his efforts.

“I am so pleased to know that you are celebrating your one hundredth birthday on 30th April, 2020,” it read. “I was also most interested to hear of your recent fundraising efforts for NHS Charities Together at this difficult time. I send my congratulations and best wishes to you on such a special occasion.”

Both Prince William and his stepmother, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also wrote to Moore to congratulate him on his successful fundraising.

Glad to hear of news like this amidst all of the “IT IS YOUR DUTY TO PANIC!!!” news we hear all the time recently.

The Other Whitey

Well, when you’ve survived places like Imphal, this millennial freakout really ain’t shit.

The sad thing is, I bet he took a bunch of “That’s not social distancing!” shit from passing busybodies while he was doing it, since that seems to be the new “thing” in the UK.

I read about him a few weeks ago when he receive one of his medals from the Regiment. Now he’s being knighted!!! Great news.

Congratulations, Captain Sir Thomas Moore!
