3 Marines Tackle, Subdue Threatening Passenger on Long-Haul Flight

By Hope Hodge Seck

Three Marines who sprang into action to restrain a hostile and disruptive fellow passenger are now being recognized by their unit commanding officer for their bravery and quick thinking.

The incident happened Monday on a flight from Tokyo to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. The three North Carolina-based Marines, all assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, were Capt. Daniel Kult, Sgt. John Dietrick and Pfc. Alexander Meinhardt. They had been traveling back to the U.S. for various reasons, about halfway through a six-month Unit Deployment Program pump in Okinawa.

During the flight, according to a Marine Corps news release, a passenger barricaded himself inside one of the plane’s bathrooms and loudly began to make what officials described as threatening comments.

“While watching a movie during my flight from Japan to Texas, I started to hear screaming coming from the restroom on board,” Dietrick, an infantry assault section leader from Mechanicsville, Virginia, said in a statement. “When I took off my headphones, I heard a man sounding very distraught and screaming from the bathroom.”

The Marines then moved quickly, according to the release. While a flight attendant got the door unlocked, the three men grabbed the passenger and used flex ties to bind him. They took him back to a seat and stayed with him to make sure he remained restrained for the rest of the flight.

Not surprised. That’s what US Marines do; they throw themselves into the breach to kick ass and take names. Suspect subdued…mission accomplished. You may now return to your in-flight movies.

Why watch the movie? The in-flight on-board live entertainment is SO much better.

People used to be polite and pleasant on flights. Now, they act like 5 year old brats who found out they can get attention for being idiots.

Do they plan this? Seems kind of ridiculous to pay for a plane ticket just to have a chance to act like a moron.

While I understand your point, in that the police took the man into custody and then sent him for a mental evaluation seems to indicate that this may have been a mental breakdown of sorts and not just a “look at me….I’m a buttwipe!” type thing.

While not trying to excuse the acts of the man, people are under a lot of pressure these days and perhaps the man was scared to fly, needed to fly, only to find out his mind said “get me outta here!”

You never know.

I hope the guy gets the medical help if he needs it and if found sane, is punished appropriately.

What saddens me is the fact that the Marines were watching a movie and had to be roused from that because of the noise instead of seeing others try to help the flight crew. Too many people would rather film an incident than help.

Well done to the Marines.

Or, as in most of these “air rage” cases, he was just amazingly shitfaced.

Ah, duty free on American Airlines. Gotta love it.

Not to defend this guy or anything like that but it used to be you were given enough space to not feel like a sardine in a can. Now you are packed in asshole to belly button and then someone wants to recline into your lap. I dread flying anymore and am tired of having to pay extra for room for my legs as if they were a checked bag.
What are the chances of having a fire team of Jar Heads
getting pissed because of your misbehavior in the head take you out and hog tie your ass? Good work Marines!

“I dread flying anymore”

I would rather fly cargo class in a C-130.

Yes, exactly.

Yawn. Now if it had been three anal orifices and one Marine, my money would still have been on the Marine. Bravo Zulu Marines!

Curious as to what movie was being shown…..
