Jeff LPH 3 sends.

Hi Ed;
Got this from former shipmate Bruce K, V-6 Div LPH 3. Yes their was a V-6 Div. We had V-1, V-3, V-4 and V-6 onboard. V-6 had the AT, ADR and AMS rates. Our diesel engine repair shop and A/C filter cleaning room were located in the forward hanger bay in Air dale country so that’s how I know a couple of them and keep in contact and the best part was that being a Snipe, I never needed a fresh air chit.

I’ll translate if anyone wants. Here’s the PSA:

CORONA Common Sense
Since they are calling on Respiratory therapists to help fight the Corona virus, and I am a retired one, too old to work in a hospital setting. I’m gonna share some common sense wisdom with those that have the virus and trying to stay home. If my advice is followed as given you will improve your chances of not ending up in the hospital on a ventilator. This also applies to the otherwise generally healthy population, so use discretion.

1. Only high temperatures kill a virus, so let your fever run high. Tylenol, Advil. Motrin, Ibuprofen etc. will bring your fever down allowing the virus to live longer. They are saying that ibuprophen, advil etc will actually exacerbate the virus. Use common sense and don’t let fever go over 103 or 104 if you got the guts. If it gets higher than that take your tylenol, not ibuprophen or advil to keep it regulated. It helps to keep house warm and cover up with blankets so body does not have to work so hard to generate the heat. It usually takes about 3 days of this to break the fever.

2. The body is going to dehydrate with the elevated temperature so you must rehydrate yourself regulaly, whether you like it or not. Gatorade with real sugar, or pedialyte with real sugar for kids, works well. Why the sugar? Sugar will give your body back the energy it is using up to create the fever. The electrolytes and fluid you are losing will also be replenished by the Gatorade. If you don’t do this and end up in the hospital they will start an IV and give you D5W (sugar water) and Normal Saline to replenish electrolytes. Gatorade is much cheaper, pain free, and comes in an assortment of flavors.

3. You must keep your lungs moist. Best done by taking long steamy showers on a regular basis, if your wheezing or congested use a real minty toothpaste and brush your teeth while taking the steamy shower and deep breath through your mouth. This will provide some bronchial dialation and help loosen the phlegm. Force your self to cough into a wet wash cloth pressed firmly over your mouth and nose, which will cause greater pressure in your lungs forcing them to expand more and break loose more of the congestion.

4. Eat healthy and regularly. Gotta keep your strength up.

5. Once the fever breaks, start moving around to get the body back in shape and blood circulating.

6. Deep breathe on a regular basis, even when it hurts. If you don’t it becomes easy to develop pneumonia. Pursed lip breathing really helps. That’s breathing in deep and slow then exhaling through tight lips as if your blowing out a candle, blow until you have completely emptied your lungs and you will be able to breath in an even deeper breath. This helps keep lungs expanded as well as increase your oxygen level.

7. Remember that every medication you take is merely relieving the symptoms, not making you well.

8. If your still dying go to ER.

I’ve been doing these things for myself and my family for over 40 years and kept them out of the hospital, all are healthy and still living today.

Thank you all for sharing. We gotta help one another.

These sound pretty reasonable to me. If any of our medical specialists on-board have comments or critiques, please speak up.
Thanks, Jeff and Bruce

^WORD^ For sure, Thanks for sharing. So far, ’bout all we’ve heard out here is don’t catch this bug, not a whole lot on what to do if you think you have caught it. Did see a little blurb on how many tests have been made and the people tested negative. As a high risk person I figured if I caught it, there was nothing they could do but make me intubulated, paralyzed, and miserable until I died. And I really don’t want to die, gasping for breath, in a hospital bed.

Wonder if I can cut the nasty taste of that Gator Ade with a coupla jiggers of Crown…or some Jameson…Can I stay hydrated on Yuengling?

ps (yes I know, alcohol, medically speaking, causes dehydration, but I don’t want to die sober and thirsty either)

I’ve never gotten a virus drinking bourbon, ergo bourbon kills viruses.
I’m gonna go med-eee-kate further and join the fun.
Infantry leads the way!

Good stuff. I am not a doctor but my mom was an RN
and she had to deal with six of us at once and still
go work at the ER.
If you can tough it out at home it is your best bet.
The old steam machine pointed at your face while you
lay in bed can cure anything. Especially with Vicks
Vapo Rub troweled over your torso.
You will want to die but you won’t.

P.S
Change your socks.

Note for further health to your teeth.

Please take your long steamy showers alone if you’re in the barracks.

They got engines upside down so maybe

The only thing worse was having one of the evaporators break down and of course the boilers are first in line then drinking/cooking water. So its 1967 and we had just left the Naval Amphibious Base at Little Creek headed to the Med and the next port is Rota, so cold salt water showers were available to all who didn’t wear khakis.

Our water gen unit went teats up on COP Agarkuf, fucking part was ‘a week out’, a month later and two showers later it showed up.
One of those showers was had back at Camp Victory, the other was tanked water (very fragrant) and 60 seconds. At least it was warm.
After my first tour, which was almost as bad, I vowed to shower every time I got the chance so when that situation happened I was less than pleased.
But cold showers? Generally fuck that, but at NTC you aren’t give a choice when in the box. That water had to be 40* with an ambient temp of about the same. Anyone that says deserts can’t be cold is an idiot.
When my gf gives me shit about taking a hot shower2 times a day I just look at her and smile.

What ship were you on, we used to run with the Gators out of Little Creek when I was on the Okinawa at Norfolk NOB. I Left in 1966 and she left in 1967 for Dago. At one time, we were under McCain Jr. I remember Comphibron 8 at the time.

The Air Force could use this as a recruiting ad.

Also seeing why your kid went USAF. ;D

Some words of advice that I gave HMs coming out of the field after an exercise:

“Wash your ass, you’ll feel like a new man!”

Try taking a shower outside, not even a wind break, in January, at Camp Darby in Ranger School. Water came from deep wells and was about 50F. No wasted water there.

Good info all, the only thing I can add is that our Physicians group says that the ibuprofen thing was a early idea, but just based on anecdote. They all now say they have no problem taking ibuprofen. My thought is, I’ll use up my tylenol first, and if I still need something, I’ll use ibuprofen.

Sorry to hijack the thread here, but while we are on the subject matter; from David Fickling of Bloomberg News who decided to write an article gushing over Chinese wet markets while ignoring just how disgusting they are.

Enemy of the people.

Don’t believe what you see with your own eyes. This is something I’d expect from Bernie “Bread lines are a good thing” Sanders.

Even the Infographic Show got how nasty the wet markets are:
