Murder charge dismissed in Robert Lee shooting

John Tufts and Alana Edgin
A Coke County woman has been cleared of a 2018 murder charge in the shooting death of her husband.

The court determined her claim of self-defense couldn’t be disproved by the prosecution, according to court records.

In June 2018, Jasmine Nichole Moreno was found in a kitchen pointing a gun at the body of her 30-year-old husband, Cisco Ray Moreno, according to an arrest affidavit.

The murder charge against her was dismissed March 20, 2020, in Coke County.

Several 911 calls were made on the evening of June 24 from residents who reported a shooting victim at a residence in the 800 block of Euel Street in Robert Lee, about 30 miles north of San Angelo.

Moreno was accused of shooting her husband multiple times, records state, telling investigators she had to cock the hammer back of the single action revolver with each successive round.

There’s a very telling quote in the article, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes. I know you’ll ferret it out.

“As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.” — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court

Well it was obvious that Cisco wasn’t a kid when he got greased. Life is probably much sweeter for Jasmine now, she’s got to be just blooming. Wonder if the investigator had attended junior college with Cisco? Was Cisco someone’s little Ray of sunshine? Did they bury Cisco in his choir robe? Were the other choir members his pallbearers? So many questions.

Speaking of questions, looks like that there carbine just came out of the safe and is packing up for some range time? Been doing a little dredging in the lake lately?

That 9 is a CMMG, yes? An older one?

I have been involved in getting folks out of domestic problems. It has ceased to be amazing how many won’t self-extract. Usually it is the victim on the slab, not the perp. Every once in a while, the beat-down one decides “no more…”

^word^ BTDT 11B. And, ‘Ed, I keyed in on your quote, ergo the snide remark about the choir robe ect..

Hey, btw, what happened to the add on Friday snack time recipe? You run out of spare time?

Oh gots ya. I had counted that as an entree’ with a soup appetizer. You were correct when she FIRST posted the second menu for Friday, the usual suspects came to expect it for every week. I’m getting into the habit of forwarding them to my Baby Girl. She has a file app that she outs them in to help keep up with the recipes. The struggle is real to try & find them thru the archive thingie. It was quicker when we had the little calendar icony thingy over on the right where I could just click thru the Thursday dates. When I can back into the big city & gets me some printer cartridges, I need to go back thru and print them off.

Arguably, there’s another one that’s equally telling IMO:

A witness who entered the kitchen after the shooting verified that Jasmine Moreno was in a cornered position, according to the state’s motion.

Repeatedly beating on someone in the past, then cornering them WHILE THEY ARE ARMED, is Darwin Award stupid. And finding the shooter in such a position given that history also rather strongly supports a self-defense argument.

The current “Banshee” line from CMMG are really neat little guns. I was able to test fire a 10mm Banshee recently. Sweet. It does have an odd delayed-blowback action. Feels a bit weird when fired, almost like the gun fired twice: BA-Bump.

My personal tastes run to “Winchester 73” for the “pistol caliber carbine” niche, but the modern iterations have appeal.

She could have Pancho’d Cisco with her fist instead.

WTF. Your comments need more clarification.

I want to make sure I have this right. Cisco tuned up Jasmine, several times according to the article, because she wouldn’t engage in a ménage à trois. She broke from his grip the last time, retrieved a gun from the bedroom, and preceded to the kitchen where she emptied the cylinder of a single action revolver into him.

I can see where the prosecutor thought it was murder. Cocking and firing a single action revolver is a deliberate act in itself. It isn’t a reflex action like one can attribute to double action revolvers or semi-auto pistols. Retrieving that revolver from one room and using it another shows at least that she was angry. Did she go looking for the asshole who beat her, or was she trying to get away when he cornered her in the kitchen and forced her to fire? Only jasmine knows. The prosecutor just couldn’t prove that she went looking for him.
