Here’s an irony for you.

Nicotiana genus and the Solanaceae (nightshade) family

Poetrooper sends.

Tobacco may save the world.

By Andrea Widburg

One fascinating thing about COVID-19 is how it’s turned every leftist theory and belief system upside-down. All the things leftists have advocated have only made us more vulnerable to epidemic disease. Now, in a supreme irony, there’s a possibility that one of the things they most hate — tobacco — will ride to the rescue.

COVID-19, in many ways, may prove to be the undoing of leftism. Here’s a short list of all the leftist ideas that are taking a beating thanks to the pandemic:

Globalism: It turns out that interconnectedness is dangerous and that international organizations, such as the WHO, are intellectually corrupt and in thrall to totalitarian governments.

Open Borders: Countries around the world, including those within the European Schengen zone, are slamming their borders shut. Even Mexico wants a working border with the United States.

Global Warming: The virus seems vulnerable to warmer, wetter climates, which is what we’d have more of if global warming were actually a thing.

Urbanization: Contrary to the leftist desire to pack people into cities (ostensibly to beat climate change but, in fact, to increase population control), dense urban areas are Petri dishes for COVID-19.

Public Transportation: For decades, the left has waged war against the comfort and convenience of cars because cars are not green. Cars may not be green, but they are clean, unlike public transportation, AKA a Petri dish on wheels.

Re-usable Bags: I’ve long called them Salmonella Sacks because using them drastically increases the spread of E. coli and salmonella. It turns out that the plastic bags that leftist governments all over America are banning (because Africa and Asia put them into rivers and oceans) are safer in pandemics.

China: Democrats screamed when Trump tried to decrease our dependence on China. He was correct to do so. Not only did China’s Belt and Road project seed COVID-19 all over the world, but China’s also sitting on most of the world’s drug manufacturing. Yikes!

Reality may shatter another leftist shibboleth. The left has been waging war on tobacco for a long time. Before I go farther with this, let me say that I think smoking or chewing tobacco is a health risk because the connection between cancer and heart disease is too strong to deny. I also hate the smell, so I bitterly resent being on the receiving end of secondhand smoke.

However, the left’s war on cancer is so vicious that it goes after vaping and e-cigarettes, which should fall squarely in the camp of letting people make their own decisions. Also, leftists are hypocritical because of their unwavering support for marijuana, which, when smoked, also causes lung damage.

Given their fanatic hatred for tobacco, leftists are likely to find horrifying the thought that Big Tobacco claims to have found within the tobacco leaf a vaccine for COVID-19:

No matter WHAT true facts you put in front of liberals, all they’ll do is clamp their ears and yell “ORANGE MAN BAD, ORANGE MAN BAD,…”

OldSoldier54

Yep.

Roh-Dog

Left believes in choices, you can make any choice you want, so long as they approve!
Look f*ckheads, I like my freedom and I’d like to keep it, along with my; doctor, Bill of Rights, money, steaks, V8 sports car, classically liberal society, cigars, etc.

penguinman000

Pretty good article in the Financial Times back in 2018 that speaks to the difference in views between the West and East on Trump’s actions/policies.

The author forgot one thing, firearms. The left has discovered that the government really can’t save and protect them. Many are running to gun stores to purchase the very tools they’ve been trying to ban for decades.

You said it:

I’ve been using the at-home-on-the-Compound time to work on grandkids shooting.

Had to go into town (pay bills, deposit a check) and swung by my friendly neighborhood Academy to restock on .22LR

Oh, yeah. Panic buying hit.

I’ll have to do with the few hundred rounds I have left until this blows over.

Slow Joe

Deposit a check?

Wow. Someone is living in the 20th century. I haven’t even seen a check in over a decade.

Commissar

You are against reusable bags? I guess that same logic means you are opposed to MONEY, door knobs, elevator buttons, hand rails, park benches, re-useable dishes and utensils at restaurants, ATMs… Right wing theories are why our country is so inadequately prepared and structurally incapable of effectively managing this virus and mitigating the consequences. But you won’t be writing the historical lessons of this pandemic, AW1ED. Millennials and Gen Z will. And your ideology is not going to fair well in that assessment. And Trump never tried to reduce our dependence on China. That is nonsense. It was all political theater. Posturing. The Trump family was making deals behind ours backs. Trading policy for profit for themselves. Selling our country out while playing general in a performative “trade war”. Nothing that was in the Jan 2020 deal differs much from previous Trade deals with China. All we showed was that we had a weak hand because unlike the Trump narrative would have you believe; China as dependent on US exports as we are. US firms need China more than China needs US firms. And our agricultural industry is heavily dependent on their imports. China has been shifting to a consumer economy for a decade. We paid the price of our dependence on China for thirty years. Just as our economy was going to start reaping the benefit of Chinese consumerism, Trump’s charade changed the equation for the worse. And I hated the TPP but one of the purposes of the TPP was to align regional nations with the US against China’s emerging economic strength and the unfair trade practices they were using in the region. When we scuttled it we scuttled the good with the bad, and Trump scuttled it for the wrong reasons out of utter ignorance. As for the rest… You are pro-global warming. Got it. You are against public transportation. Got it. You are against urbanization. Got it. But who the fuck was for it? It was a consequence of educational opportunities, and economic activity. It was not a strategy to fight global warming. The per capita… Read more »

Damn, Lars… who lit the fuse on your manpon today? Get away from the ‘net for a few.

With the amount of anger you have when you post here, I’m surprised you haven’t had a stroke, yet.

Poetrooper

Senior chief, as soon as I saw this article I grinned and said to myself, “Lars bait, oh yeah, Lars bait for absolute certain.”

Heh…

Skyjumper

Yeah Poetrooper,
Lars the old Master De Baiter.

You mean right-wing theories like this, Lars?

5th/77th FA

Damn Larsi Boi, you beat all, you know that don’t you? I should say (in his best Dan Akroyd voice) Lars, you ignorant slut, you have, once again, proven exactly what API posted up yonder. All you can say is “ORANGE MAN BAD” click “ORANGE MAN BAD” click. But I won’t say that because ‘Ed asked us not to make personal attacks, even though you spend 90% of your posts here attacking someone, in addition to President Trump. Give it a rest.

It would bode you well to reach between your legs, grab yourself by the eyes and pull your head out of your azz. FIRST of all, AW1Ed did not write the article, he only posted it. And neither did Poetrooper, he only forwarded it to this site. That being said, you wanna bitch at someone, bitch at the author. Each point that the author made was very legit and spot on. You are so obsessed with your seething hatred of Trump that you cannot see anything else.

God put every plant and animal that is on this Earth for our benefit. Tobacco leaves have long been used as a poultice to draw poisons out of the body. Our Granny would dampen up some snuff to put on bug bites/bee stings and the relief was instant. Disclaimer. I smoked for a number of years, quit cigarettes after my FIRST TIA back on 29 Mar 18. I would still, to this day, cut someone’s lips off with a straight razor to steal the cig from their mouth.

Do you show up for abuse here because the only love you got from yo Momma was abusive love?

Poetrooper

KOB, you do know, don’t you, that Lar’s momma thought he only had one eye the first year or so of the little tad’s life?

That is until she realized she’d been carryin’ him upside down…

Heh…

timactual

I share your pain. I quit smoking over twenty years ago and I still stand downwind of smokers so I can get some second hand smoke. When they still had cigarettes at supermarket checkout lines I would grab a pack of Camels and just inhale the wondrous smell of fine tobacco until they handed me my change and told me “Get the hell out of here, weirdo, and don’t come back!”.

I still miss cigarettes.

David

quit in 1981 and sometimes still the smell of a freshly-lit cigarette drives me nuts. If anyone asks, I am a smoker and addict who gave up smoking. But I am sure as hell not cured, just under control. I can also track the route of a smoker through a non-smoking building by the stench they give off.

Hondo

You do realize that AW1Ed was posting someone else’s article above – right, Commissar? Poetrooper appears to have provided that one; AW1Ed simply acted as his agent in posting same. That fact is clearly identified above.

Further: Poetrooper’s article is virtually all a quote from annother article written by a 3rd party. I don’t believe anything either AW1Ed or Poetrooper actually wrote themselves above even mentions reusable bags, public transportation, or reducing dependence on China – or any of the other points in the original article that seem to have offended you.

In short: you’re arguing with the wrong person. You got a problem with the above, you need to take it up with the original author – Ms. Andrea Widburg. She’s also clearly identified above as the original author whose work apparently offends you.

Sheesh, would you please learn to comprehend standard written English? Or at least read a bit more carefully?

Commissar

My mistake.

I just assumed AW1Ed was trolling me like he does from time to time.

Makes more sense that it was Poe..

Hondo

You still don’t get it, do you?

You seem to find some of the info in the article PT quoted objectionable. You flew off the handle at AW1Ed – apparently because you thought he wrote the material (or perhaps because you thought he agreed with it). You missed the points that (1) AW1Ed didn’t write what you found objectionable, and (2) without further information, there’s no valid reason to assume he agrees with all of the quoted material (or any of it, for that matter). He could have been posting it for any number of other reasons – and apparently in fact was indeed doing exactly that.

You FINALLY picked up on point (1) regarding AW1Ed – but not about Poetrooper. But it appears you still haven’t grasped point (2). So let me spell it out for you, using very simple terms:

You read stuff. You get mad. You get mad at Ed ’cause you think he write stuff.

But Ed not write stuff that make you mad. Maybe some or all of stuff that make you mad make him mad, too.

Now you mad at Poe. It seem like you think Poe write stuff, or maybe he like stuff that make you mad.

But just like Ed, Poe not write stuff that make you mad. Maybe some or all of same stuff that make you mad make Poe mad, too.

Could be Poe or Ed post that as joke, or as trap. If trap, you fall for it.

You’ve now beclowned yourself 3 times. First, by flying off the handle at AW1Ed for something he didn’t write (or even necessarily agree with). Second, for apparently still not realizing that the same is true about Poetrooper. And third, for taking the bait in the first place.

A Proud Infidel®™

He very obviously DOES NOT think for himself, he simply regurgitates his “ORANGE MAN BAD, ORANGE MAN BAD…” propaganda he’s been programmed with.

OWB

Hondo, you seem to be trying to ascribe sanity to this situation. Can’t be done. Doesn’t matter to the one you are trying to educate who wrote it. It upset him therefore everyone must be punished.

See how simple this is? Don’t frustrate yourself by trying to inject logic into it.

ArmyATC

Let’s follow your logic train and do a reverse comparison. If you believe reusables are the bee’s knees then you must be in favor of reusing N95 masks and hazard suits. Surgical tubing should be washed and reused (I know it is sometimes to detrimental effect for some patients). I’d wager you’re even for reusing condoms.

26Limabeans

“I’d wager you’re even for reusing condoms”

He just turns them inside out.

SFC D

He would turn a ribbed condom inside out. For HIS pleasure.

A Proud Infidel®™

I bet that it’s been so long since he last got laid that his virginity has been restored!

Hondo

I’d wager you’re even for reusing condoms.

Therein lies a joke I heard decades ago regarding a Scottish Highlands regiment and its Sergeant Major. But I’ll spare everyone. (smile)

timactual

Let me guess. something about the thrifty Scots and their Regimental condom, one each.

Good luck reusing your re-usable bag
Even in the people’s republic of Tucson
They put a end to that

It’s true. But they’re still heavily in favor of open borders. That fat fuck with the greasy moustache and the new mayor are to the far left of Gavin Newsome and Jerry Brown.

Commissar – What is wrong with views that support free will?

NHSparky

Dear Dipshit,

Here at Casa de Sparky Western Annex, where they just outlawed single use plastic bags, they’ve now done a 180 and said, “You can use your reusable bags, but you’re bagging your own shit, or you can have free single use bags.”

Fucking amazing how that works, ain’t it?

Roh-Dog

I’m gonna stock up. They ain’t ‘single use’ in this house. They get used for; dryer lint, kitchen trash, both side baskets for the bed, in the bathroom.
Hell, I even carry a couple when hunting or fishing, for my trash or others’ I find, and they make a handy tote for the fishes cuz I do t like gettin all slimy, or bloody from squirrels or birds and such.
Lars seems like the kinda dude those laws ‘gainst bags is fer, gets one in his dickbeaters and his first desire is to choke a dolphin to death wit it.
That boy ain’t rite.

Ex-PH2

Ditto. Aldi’s shopping bags are real heavy-duty stuff and useful for for many, many trips to the store. Much better than the flimsies that Walmart uses, too.
They are also useful for many other things, including taking books to the library for their book sale room.

And those flimsy plastic bags that Walmart uses are great for any kind of small trash, including cleaning the cat boxes and bagging up small messes of garbage when fixing meals.

The newspaper comes in plastic sleeves, which are freebies and elbow length for wiping down the countertops and cleaning the stove and microwave. Just roll down the sleeve over the wet paper junk, knot the sleeve and into the trash it goes. And the newspapers are excellent for sopping up spills on the floor, after which those “sleeves” keep your hands clean and dry when you pick up the soggy newsprint.

Geezo Pete, anything can be recycled and reused, including printer paper; just XX out one side and reload into your printer. What’s wrong with that? Saves some cash in the end. I store dry beans and rice in Claussen’s pickle jars.

Recycling that plastic stuff means I don’t have to spend a cent on the handy-dandy plastic bags that come in rolls at the store. If it saves some money, I’m in favor of it.

Roh-Dog

Saves the monies and you don’t have to pay the taxman! There’s sales tax on garbage bags here in CT because…reasons.
If they could find a way of taxing my contempt for them they would.

timactual

Same-same here. I double-bag everything at the store and grab a few extras.I seem to be running short these days.

The Other Whitey

You are amazing, Lars. I can’t say I’ve ever encountered anyone so stupid yet simultaneously so convinced that he’s intellectually superior to the rest of the human race as you are. You’re a shining example of the human mind’s capacity for delusion.

I feel like I should refer you to a buddy of mine who’s going back to school for a psychology degree. He and the rest of his class oughta study you.

YOU POOP STAIN!!!

timactual

A question;

Does saying something like “the morons who voted for Trump” count as a personal attack? Or something like “Those who believe X are moral degenerates”?

Some of us who voted for Trump or believe X certainly think so.

Hondo

Well, AW1Ed did say (1) that Commissar is an exception, and (2) he gives as much as he gets. I’m thinking the examples you quote fall into the latter category – and are why Commissar is “special”.

Poetrooper

Hondo, Lars may give as MUCH as he gets but he sure doesn’t give as GOOD as he gets–he’s very pedestrian when it comes to handing out insults–take away “bullshit” and the boy’s tongue-tied. He’d never cut it in a barracks game of “The Dozens,” that’s for sure.

Nope, to paraphrase another lefty bullshit artist, Dan Rather–on this forum Lars is like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

SFC D

If Lars is gonna keep holding up a target, we’re gonna keep firing.

timactual

It is a serious question. I had no one specific in mind. I have read similar comments from various people.

To put it more bluntly, if someone wrote that “black people are all shiftless and lazy” would a black person be authorized to take it personally?

Graybeard

Being a lowly plebeian, I don’t see everything you see, AW1Ed, but all us long-time posters know (or ought to by now) to shrug off anything that smacks of a personal attack.

When I first got active in grass-roots politics back in the early 80’s we had a chairman say “In this business, you need a thick skin and a short memory.”

I think those come in useful in a lot of places. But we sure ‘preciate y’all “behind the curtain.”

timactual

Sorry, but the excuse that “they don’t mean it personally” is wearing a bit thin. Of course attacks like that are personal. We all know it. If someone is talking to veterans and says “generally speaking, veterans are violence-prone parasites milking their time shuffling papers for everything they can get” you can’t really expect anyone to believe it’s not a personal attack hiding behind the excuse that “gee, it wasn’t personal”.

Personally, I am a pretty easy going guy but I have reached my limit and I am too old to give a flying fiddlestick and put up with genteel BS.

OldSoldier54

Since this thread is about the Wuhan virus, I’ll post this link here.

I got this on the Dan Bongino Podcast today (Ep. 1219) in the show notes. The link to the PJMedia article is here .

Doesn’t reference any BSL4 labs I mentioned in a previous thread, but is interesting because it refers to a Chinese source.

Poetrooper

Here’s another one of your “facts,” Lars, that can be flipped on its butt:

“And our agricultural industry is heavily dependent on their imports.”

I recently read somewhere that China feeds a quarter of the world’s population while possessing only 7% of the world’s arable land. They are heavily dependent on imports for food security and guess who their single largest guarantor of that food security happens to be?

Disgruntled American farmers may well get pissed at the government for reducing exports but they sure as hell aren’t going to overthrow that government. On the other hand, a billion and a half hungry Chinese…

Graybeard

We can hope for a true Chinese revolution, can’t we?

OldSoldier54

One can only hope.

Poetrooper

And yet another Larsist pronouncement that may well be, to borrow his favorite brickbat, pure bullshit:

“But you won’t be writing the historical lessons of this pandemic, AW1ED.

“Millennials and Gen Z will.

“And your ideology is not going to fair well in that assessment.”

Well, Lars, as my ol’ man used to say, “You might not want to be quite so sure of yourself about that, son,” if these numbers are any indication of which ideologies are increasing in favor:

https://www.breitbart.com/the-media/2020/04/02/nolte-cnn-fails-to-place-one-show-in-top-20-during-q1-of-2020/

Of course, as some wag quipped the other day, CNN’s numbers have to be down because they no longer have all those captive airport audiences.

CCO

Fun bonus fact: Tobacco is the guinea pig of the plant world; it’s long been used to host experiments.

OWB

So, should we switch from ultralights to the fully leaded variety? Or menthols??

Menthols! Kools or the Marlboro Blacks. The Camel Crush. FIRST few tokes regular, do the crush and finish up with the menthol. I still have my Zippos…with flints…with fluid!
