Senate Passes Bill to Curb President Trump’s War Powers

| February 14, 2020

Eight Republicans broke with their party to join Democratic Senators to pass a bill to curb President Trump’s war powers. The bill heads to the House.

Since the Senate version had differences from the one that the House considered, these differences have to be reconciled. After it passes the House, it heads to the White House for the expected veto.

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine wrote the bill. He argued that this was about Congress’s power to declare war. Senator McConnel argued that the bill was very flawed, blunt, and broad. President Trump, knowing that they were considering this, posted a couple of tweets arguing against the proposed bill.

From Fox News:

The measure was authored by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who said the resolution was not about Trump or even the presidency, but instead was an important reassertion of congressional power to declare war.

After years of Congress avoiding its constitutional duty on matters of war, I’m grateful that a bipartisan majority of Senators affirmed that the president cannot send our troops into conflict without authorization,” Kaine said.

McConnell called the measure “deeply flawed” in a floor speech Wednesday. “It is too blunt and too broad,” the Kentucky Republican said.

Trump argued in two tweets Wednesday that a vote against Kaine’s proposal was important for national security and pointed to the Jan. 3 drone strike that killed Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani.

Fox News and CNN have details on this story.

Is this true (taken from the Daily Wire)?

“Usually a concurrent resolution does not have the power of law behind it; even though it does not require the President to sign it, President Trump can simply ignore it, and in effect, “veto” it. This is clearly grandstanding by Congress; for you cannot remove the executive power of the President to make such important decisions when necessary; such as the intelligence that President Trump received concerning General Soleimani’s terrorist plot to kill American. It is one thing for Congress to have the Constitutional power to declare war, but another thing to limit the power of the executive branch of our government to make decisions which protect the people of this nation against our enemies. I do not understand the thinking of these Republican senators.”

It’s true. Don’t know why all the media says Trump is going to veto it, it’s not a bill to veto. It’s just Congress throwing an official sounding hissy fit.

If they made it an actual bill, then Trump would veto it like he did the one attempting to limit his authority in Yemen. Once a president gets Congress to give them power, a president would be a fool to give it up. Which was essentially Trump’s argument in vetoing it.

That’s good news. Thanks Mason.

“I do not understand the thinking of these Republican senators.”

I do. Swamp things are hedging their bets in case Trump somehow loses this year. Being career politicians, they want to secure their gravy train with an otherwise-meaningless “See? I was against the Bad Orange Man too!” moment.

Yet another example of why we need congressional term limits.

Kaine…The cuck for Hitlery and the epitome of what is wrong with Virginia AND the District of Criminals. None of this surprises me.

This just shows how the Dems are out of touch with the will of the people and the President, and how much they are in favor of protecting the ally Iran.
Trump has not threatened War…he took out a really bad guy after his followers attacked a US Embassy which is something that coward Obama/Barry Bananas didn’t have the balls to do.
This will get vetoed anyway. He doesn’t need their permission to do similar operations nor should he. The Dems and their propaganda arm run this unholy circle-jerk where they each believe each others nonsense about him only to see it amplified each time it circulates. Trump’s crazy??? Crazy like a fox. BOOM!!! KAGA 2020!

This shows that the Dems and apparently several RINO failed their high school civics class. They are part of the government but still don’t understand how it works.
Not to mention most of them completely don’t understand economics! How is it that they can become so wealthy and still not understand how that money is made, and gets to them? If they believe that Socialism is the answer.
Here is a good example (possibly an urban myth):

This is political grandstanding, an empty gesture and Dems (plus a couple RINOS) flipping the finger to Trump. Nothing more.

Imagine a world in which an actual bill limiting executive powers gets passed…now imagine a democrat president and republican house/senate.

Oops.

Its high time we go back to the Constitution and the delegation of Powers contained within.
Also, these Senators should be elected by the respectively by the States and the Vice President chosen as the second place vote, emplaced by the Electoral College as written, acting as the President of that body.
Its a damn shame we’ve ‘modernized’ a document that was penned by some of the brightest minds, in blood after sacrifices from the letees.
But what do I know? I was only sworn to uphold and defend that ancient parchment…,
